THE FINAL BOSS OF ONE PIECE IS HERE! ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1149 FULL SPOILERS!!
There is no shot the Straw Hats stand a chance against Imu.

In the previous One Piece chapter, Gaban managed to cancel Shepherd Sommers’ immortality and save Robin and the Straw Hats.
One Piece Chapter 1149 is titled, “One Second”.
This chapter has 19 pages, including the 2 color page spread.
One Piece is on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump this issue, featuring Luffy and Chopper, with Sanji as the driver of the car with the number 56.
The chapter color page spread on the cover is a reader request for Oda to draw “The Straw Hat Pirates opening a Maid Cafe.”
Here we see Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, a cat and a human-goat all wearing suits, acting as the clients of the Bottakuri Maid Caf, which is run by Nami, Robin, Lilith and kid Bonney dressed as maids.
There seems to be an RIP sign on the chair Bonney grabs.
This better not be foreshadowing.
Usopp and the cat are in shock by the high prices on the menu.
The illustration is a tribute to “Izakaya Bottakuri” Manga/Novel by Shiwasuda (art) and Takimi Akikowa (story).
Early on, we should note that nothing happens with Loki or the Monster Trio in this chapter but potentially the next as we will see.
Sommers’ Humiliating Defeat. That Was Quick and Anticlimactic.
The chapter immediately begins with Scopper Gaban fighting Sommers.
Gaban spins his axes and tries to attack Sommers but the latter summons his thorny vines as a shield but Gaban cuts through them.
While the Straw Hats watch on, Sommers summons more thorns from his sword and from the ground but Gaban eventually cuts up Sommers in two across the chest with an attack called Futenraku (which means “Heavenly Music Axe” and it is pronounced the same as “infallible” in Japanese).
Sommers falls on the thorns, and since he cannot recover, he stays there all chapter.
Chopper decides to run off, likely heading for Luffy to provide crucial information.
If he does show up, he might help heal Loki faster as well.
Unfortunately, the Walrus School does burn, with Killingham firing fire arrows at the building, so the God’s Knights got what part of what they want for now and it was to destroy the Giants’ culture in front of their eyes.
Jarul and Ange cry over this. Robin also looks at this from afar, clearly reminded of the Ohara Incident.
Gaban expresses his anger at how the God’s Knights are stripping away the culture, history and will to fight of the Giants.
Ronja stops from walking down the chasm though and the giants go into a panic as they run to see her.
Gaban’s Fall
In retaliation, Gunko goes after Colon, threatening to kill him with an arrow-shaped sword seemingly wrapped in bandages, likely made from her Aro Aro no Mi, if Gaban does not surrender.
As Gaban goes after Colon, we see a flashback of a more middle-aged Gaban, still having black hair but with the stubble of his current age, witnessing Colon’s birth 20 years ago, standing on Ripley’s hand.
To the present, Gaban tells Colon to hold on for one second (the chapter title) as Gunko starts to stab Colon’s neck with her arrow-sword and we see Colon’s neck starts to bleed.
Enraged, Gaban goes after Gunko as black lightning comes out from his axe, which could be a sign of his Conqueror’s Haki being infused (there is still no solid confirmation he has Conqueror’s Haki).
However, Gaban sees a vision through Advanced Observation Haki that Colon will be killed before he can save the boy and we even see Gunko stabbing the sword through Colon’s neck.
This results in Gaban immediately letting go of his axes and surrendering.
Gunko goes to Gaban and fires three arrows from her finger, which stab Gaban’s torso, causing him to fall from the giant branch, saying sorry to Colon and Elbaph.
Gunko is from Brook’s Past Life
On the last double page of the chapter, we see Colon crying out for his dad, which triggers memories for Gunko.
First, we see an adult woman crying and screaming “Father–!!”, with the woman’s hair is similar to Gunko’s but as we do not see her eyes, we cannot be sure.
Gunko in the present is confused by this memory and we see another flashback panel of a little girl holding Brook’s hand, with Brook saying that becoming a pirate is his dream and this is a place with music.
We also are not sure if the little girl is Gunko but we are sure that this is Brook from before he became part of the Rumbar Pirates, meaning this was from more than 50 years ago.
This is all deeply interesting as there are many interpretations to draw from this scene, which we will go over later.
In the present, Brook notes how similar Gunko looks to someone he knew, which is similar to what he said in Chapter 1147: “Ronja”.
Gunko runs to Brook and tries to free him, asking if this is Brook.
Suddenly, Gunko freezes and her eyes turn white as Imu’s voice speaks to all 3 God’s Knights’ heads, asking them why they are taking so much time.
The Giant kids are terrified of Gunko as we see in the last panel Gunko’s eyes changing…to that of Imu’s
Gunko is Imu’s Vessel
That is when we get this massive reveal: that all this time, Gunko was actually Imu’s vessel.
This explains why Imu was using arrows when killing King Nefertari Cobra.
Ever since Gunko was revealed to be the user of the Aro Aro no Mi, we speculated a connection between her and Imu due to the way Imu tried to stab through both Sabo and King Cobra.
That was not the tail of a demon but the ability of the Aro Aro no Mi.
If Gunko has two personalities, what if Blackbeard is in a similar situation, having two or even three personalities
It also makes sense why Luffy and Zoro were not able to meet Gunko yet as that would expose Gunko’s true nature, and by extension, Blackbeard as well.
Who Exactly is Gunko to Brook?
While Brook’s past with the Rumbar Pirates has been well-established, it was only a brief period of time in his life compared to his apparent past as some sort of leader of a military unit in a “certain kingdom”.
The two flashback panels seem to indicate that Gunko was one of the two figures present as these were her memories.
Obviously, Gunko did not see the crying woman or the child with Brook but that is our perspective to her past.
It is possible that these are two points in Gunko’s past, except the continuity would be strange.
For one, the man who dreamt of becoming a pirate, Brook, was around 38 years old and probably near the point where he would have joined them.
Given, however, that we do not see his face, we do not know at what age or point in life this was from, whether it was before joining his battle group or after.
Brook’s knowledge of God’s Knights, a far more secretive unit than CP0, suggests that he either met them at some point or even was part of them.
Perhaps Brook’s desire to escape from the Celestial Dragons and becoming a pirate could explain the contrasts in Gunko’s personality.
There are three ideas to go from this:
First is that there is a possibility that Gunko might be Brook’s daughter because the first panel shows a woman screaming for her father.
This would have to be Gunko herself because this was such a personal memory.
However, the second flashback, of a small child meeting Brook, indicates that the order of events could be different.
Perhaps Brook was an absentee father and a teenaged Gunko would witness Brook leaving.
Maybe Gunko was part of God’s Knights 50 years ago and witnessed Brook’s escape from the group.
After all, her name means “Army child”.
Some even point out that Gunko’s lack of leg covering could be the inspiration for Brook’s question on panties but this one is just mere speculation.
A second possibility is that Gunko lost her father and the second panel suggests that Brook took her in.
Due to Brook’s height, it is possible for Gunko, a young woman, to be that small compared to Brook or given we barely see her eyes in that shot, we are left to interpret whether or not it is Gunko and if so, if this was a little girl, a child like Colon.
A third possibility is that they are probably two different people.
Perhaps the first woman is Imu and this traumatic experience of seeing a child cry for their father awakened something in Imu, such that it not only snapped Gunko out of her present life but even made Imu possess her.
The second one would definitely be Gunko herself, the child Brook knew or met.
Imu and Mihawk Connections
Ever since Imu’s introduction, there has been buzz surrounding the connection between Imu and Mihawk due to their similar eyes.
Mihawk has been called Hawk Eyes because of the way his eyes look like that of a hawk’s.
In the anime, they are yellow, which makes the connection more apparent but in the manga, his eyes are officially colored red.
The same red color as Imu’s own ringed eyes.
Ringed eyes were also present when Cavendish and his split persona Hakuba split control over their body.
Big Mom and Robin had ringed eyes but those were only during lucid episodes when the characters were mad.
While Big Mom’s case is more unique due to being constantly presented during hunger pangs, Robin’s ringed eyes were only present in times of intense rage, a featured shared with other characters.
Gunko is an interesting case because she always had heterochromia, with the left eye possibly being red like Imu’s.
However, the eyes are not ringed like Imu’s and only appear so once Imu is in full control.
Meanwhile, Cavendish by default maintained his normal blue eyes for the most part and Mihawk’s ringed eyes also stay on constantly.
We do not know much about Mihawk’s past but Oda already gave us an early glimpse into most characters’ childhoods, with Mihawk having the same eyes as he currently has while being bruised from training.
His ornate clothing is the same as before as well.
Imu Has Two Bodies?
Imu’s possession of Gunko is…quite unique.
Most “split personality” stories involve the idea of a hidden event or double agent among the characters but this situation is different from, say, Diavolo’s control over Doppio, who was the innocent version of his past acting as his second-in-command.
Gunko does share that dynamic with Imu as she is technically in charge of the operation.
Gunko also has two differently-colored eyes, which could mean she was the main vessel for Imu.
However, the thing that sets most of these stories apart is that Imu was always stationed in Mary Geoise and was switching between the main body with the crown and Gunko.
This leads to the idea that the main body might be Nefertari D. Lili herself, given Imu’s obsession with Lili.
However, this would be a strange thought, considering that Imu only recently learned that Lili was a member of the repulsive D Clan that opposed the World Government.
Imagine being inside the body of someone you equally hate and love.
There are two leading ideas to go off here.
First, remember what Ivankov said about St. Nerona Imu having undergone the “Perennial Youth Operation”?
We might have a glimpse of what actually happens because it does not look like a simple immortality surgery.
The Ope Ope no Mi has an ability called “Personality Transplant Surgery”, which we see thoroughly demonstrated during the Punk Hazard Arc.
However, Law has the Ope Ope no Mi, not Imu, which means that the Perennial Youth Operation must have given Imu the ability to switch personalities.
A second possibility is that this is yet another aspect of Imu’s Devil powers that allow her to control the Five Elders and the immortal God’s Knights.
Considering how Imu was able to instantly kill Saturn without being there in person, it is possible that Imu has the ability to possess any one of her pawns.
Either way, Imu takes control because of how long it is taking for the God’s Knights to acquire the Giant Mercenaries.
It seems there is an actual good reason for this move.
The Fall of the Holy Hand Mary Geoise
As it turns out, while the Elbaph operation has taken place, Holy Land Mary Geoise has been under attack, with most of it burning.
This is why Shamrock was called back to Mary Geoise, to help clear this mess.
This is also why Imu was desperate enough to forcefully colonize Elbaph.
It seems there were also already hints of a much bigger disaster when Sommers and Killingham were summoned in Chapter 1140: “Scopper Gaban”, as Sommers was talking to someone about the Celestial Dragons’ food supplies, which was due to the Revolutionary Army destroying their food supplies before reaching the Red Line.
This was actually already hinted even before the Final Saga began.
In the 2019 game One Piece: World Seeker, which Oda supervised, there was artwork showing the fall of Mary Geoise.
The caption reads: “The Holy Land Mary Geoise, engulfed in flames!! Who is this mysterious figure in this untouchable sacred place…!?”
6 years later, we see the event unfold.
There are two likely culprits behind this disaster.
We will rule out Imu and any Nero-related hijinks because Imu’s tone suggests this was never planned at all and the world has gone far beyond their control.
This leads to two conclusions: the Revolutionary Army and the Blackbeard Pirates.
Fans remember that in Chapter 1 , when Dragon said that when God’s Knights make their move, the real war will begin.
It seems this is that time, as three of the God’s Knights, including Imu’s own vessel (unknown to everyone else), are on Elbaph, leaving a massive opening and gap in power.
But would Dragon make such a move at this point instead of during Vegapunk’s broadcast, where all the Five Elders gathered, assuming he kept tabs on their whereabouts.
Either way, removing three of the potentially nine-man squad of God’s Knights might have been the opening Dragon was waiting for.
However, it is also possible that this disaster could be the Blackbeard Pirates’ work.
In Chapter 1126: “Settling the Score”, Laffitte was assigned by Marshall D. Teach to monitor the Revolutionary Army’s sabotage of the bondolas that held the food supply for the World Nobles, which could mean that the Blackbeard Pirates might have launched an attack on the Red Line, no longer waiting around for any pronouncement of the Blackbeard Kingdom becoming a World Government member, assuming Blackbeard was actually serious about that rather than do his old ploy of joining the World Government to gain access to some place.
A third possibility is that this is a Marine coup d’etat, as we established in one of our recent videos.
This might be due to a combination of Kizaru’s Egghead experience and Fleet Admiral Sakazuki’s gradual dissatisfaction with being led around by his superiors.
Perhaps SWORD has finally broken loose, possibly with a mutiny from the anti-Absolute Justice faction like Fujitora and Smoker.
Or a fourth possibility is that Cross Guild might have gone beyond bounty hunting but this is all quite vague.
We are still unsure of what exactly is happening until we proceed with the upcoming chapters.
Can Luffy even fight Imu?
As it looks, the Monster Trio have a handful as they might actually have to fight the Final Boss of One Piece in the very middle of the Final Saga, rather than at the end.
Although Luffy has Gear 5, there have been limitations and Gaban, in spite of surrendering to Luffy in their duel, was able to prevent an immortal like Shepherd Sommers from becoming a problem with some sort of Haki.
Could Luffy do the same with Imu?
The rules might be different but perhaps one encounter will teach Luffy and the Straw Hats the level of power they would need to overcome and that they cannot do this alone.
Will the Elbaph Arc end with Luffy dethroning the God of the One Piece world or a much greater darkness that the Straw Hats need the One Piece for?
The chapter ends with Imu saying: “Mu will demonstrate what it means to be ruled by a God!!”
