One Piece can be harsh. And sorry to say this but Bartolomeo deserved that harsh lesson. But who is separating the Straw Hats this time?

In the previous One Piece chapter, we see Satrun finally get what he deserves as Imu destroys him and replaces him with Figarland Garling.

Chapter 1126 is titled, “Taking Responsibility”

Volume 14 of ”Oni Child Yamato’s Golden Harvest Surrogate Pilgrimage” shows Yamato eating soba in Kuri but one of the girls informs Yamato that her workmates have disappeared.

This is the second disappearance in this cover story, with Minamoto the Carpenter in Chapter 1125 being highlighted.

Previously, Yamato foiled a kidnapping attempt and there was the silhouette of someone.

Could these three incidents be connected somehow?

The chapter has a total of 17 pages.

Duels and Drunkenness

The chapter begins with the Giant Warrior Pirates ship, where the Straw Hats listen to Oimo and Kashii explain what happened after Enies Lobby 2 years ago.

The two giants head for Little Garden and find Dorry and Brogy punching instead of using their weapons, which were destroyed after using “Hakoku” to defeat the “Island Eater”

Realizing that they can never finish their fight without weapons, Oimo and Kashii convince their captains to return to Elbaf to get new weapons to continue the fight.

Nami asks Dorry and Brogy if they continue their duels and is annoyed that they do but Usopp scolds her for not considering their warrior culture, something Luffy also re-echoes.

Sanji notes how strong the giants’ alcohol is, which one of the giants reveals is an absinthe called “Green Fairy” that can cause hallucinations.

This is taken from the real world, as absinthes can be used as psychoactive drugs.

Meanwhile, Bonney sits on Kuma’s lap, with Kuma smiling in front of Bonney.

The girl is happy to be able to watch the horizon together with her daddy.

The alcohol would be quite a concern and possibly even a plot device for the Elbaf Arc.

If the giants warn the little humans how the Green Fairy can cause illusions, it is possible some events moving forward would either be not real or the people involved would be affected by severe alcoholism.

Shanks Punishes Bartolomeo

We cut to “Gaither Island”, where a month ago, we see Bartolomeo burn the flag of the Red Hair Pirates (Chapter 869-875 cover story).

In Chapter 1059, Lucky Roo brings up the Barto Club’s activities and pointed out that the Red Hair Pirates would be failing their duties if they leave Bartolomeo alone.

Now we see that cover story come full circle

Bartolomeo has been beaten up by the Red Hair Pirates and tied up.

He is made to kneel before Shanks, who says that forgiving Bartolomeo would reduce the power of the flag of the Red Hair Pirates, which in turn means that the islands and friends under Shanks’ protection would be in greater danger.

This is an example of the political theory of social constructivism, where symbols and flags create social constructs that dictate or inform people’s behavior.

Shanks knows that he cannot be everywhere, so the flag of an Emperor of the Sea must be associated with fear or respect for that Emperor’s law.

Bartolomeo is in tears and apologizes for his mistakes, saying that he did not think straight and committed an act out of ignorance.

Some might see the flag burning incident as a joke because of the nature of Bartolomeo as a comic relief character, a big and seemingly jovial fanboy of Monkey D. Luffy.

But before this, Bartolomeo actually burned the town under the flag’s protection in Chapter 870 and then sold Straw Hat merchandise to the frightened townsfolk in Chapter 871, all without knowing it was under Shanks’ protection.

Again, apply social constructivism and imagine what people’s impressions of Luffy would be after that.

This is not ignorance but negligence, even without full comprehension of the responsibilities associated with any of the two Emperor’s brands.

Hongo gives Bartolomeo a small bottle containing a poison and gives the latter one month to poison Luffy.

Hongo reveals that the poison will cause immense pain with blood bursting out of the body.

Since Luffy is Bartolomeo’s superior (and unwilling admiral of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet), Hondo feels that Luffy must take responsibility.

Bartolomeo points out that this is far too cruel a punishment and says that Luffy and the others have nothing to do with this and so he willfully downs the poison, much to the Barto Club’s horror.

Shanks and Beckman watch this with interest.

Bartolomeo explains that Luffy did not give them his “flag” and “brother cup” as a responsibility entrusted to them but rather insisted on taking them for themselves.

He insists on his lack of worth and that Luffy does not have time to waste on him and his mistakes, so he chooses death as punishment for challenging a Yonko foolishly.

However, Bartolomeo laments that he will never see Luffy claim the One Piece and become Pirate King, which was also his dream.

Fortunately, there was no poison in the bottle.

This looks like a test of loyalty.

Shanks lets them go free to set sail.

Onboard the Going Luffy-Senpai, Bartolomeo tells Gambia he thought Shanks was a terrifying man because of his status, but now he has discovered Shanks is quite naive.

Onboard the Red Force, Shanks looks on and smiles, which Beckman notices.

Shanks is glad that Luffy has someone that cares for him so much.

However, a more serious Yasopp tells his captain to scoot over as he aims his weapon at the Going Luffy-Senpai, saying “Business is business”, and shoots down the ship, sinking the Going Luffy-Senpai along with its crew.

Bartolomeo’s fate is left unknown, the broken Luffy-Senpai figurine floating as the last known fragment of this man’s dream.

Our early chapter preview shows how less context can make Shanks seem evil but if anything, he’s being a king here.

Evil Shanks theorists would be disappointed to know that all of this is a normal routine for a political figure like Shanks, whom we know is pragmatic in his dealings.

He has used his political muscle a few times, especially to end the Paramount War.

However, it seems that Yasopp is acting on his own initiative as part of the crew’s code of law, ensuring that their reputation and responsibilities are maintained.

Bartolomeo actually deserves it, cruel as it is.

The Final Saga so far has seen the apparent deaths of the dreams of Law and Kid.

Notice I use the word “death of the dream”, not their lives as Bepo saved Law.

It could be temporary but Bartolomeo does not seem to have a particularly strong role in the story, besides being the loudest Straw Hat advocate among the Corrida Coliseum gladiators turned Straw Hat Grand Fleet members.

This moment is a strong reminder of the seriousness of the story, with the responsibility of being a pirate being part and parcel of the freedom desired from it, something Luffy had to learn the hard way in the pre-timeskip.

This is pirate’s justice, the responsibility of freedom, hence the chapter title.

Blackbeard Returns

We cut to Hachinosu Island as Marshall D. Teach returns from the trip from Winner Island, where he defeated Law and took his poneglyph copies.

Seems the Blackbeard pirates are excited to go get the One Piece with Teach.

Pizarro is still in control of the giant skull, which has bandages due to Garp and Koby’s assaults.

Sanjuan Wolf is helping reconstruct the island but due to his massive size, he breaks more things than he fixes instead.

Teach is upset that Pizarro let Koby get away as he was their bargaining chip to negotiate with the Marines.

However, he is delighted that Kuzan captured Garp.

Kuzan said that he fought with the intent to kill but Garp survived.

Garp was tied ot many chains in his cell.

Pudding is in the meeting with Blackbeard’s Titanic Captains and is forced to stay by Teach’ side as he brags about getting the “three-eyed” girl, who is their key to reading the Poneglyphs.

Teach calls Laffitte, who is at “Naval Company UMIT Shipping Headquarters” (Umit is one of the emperors of the Underworld invited to Big Mom’s tea party)

Laffitte is observing the Revolutionary Army movements as they cut the supply ships sent to Mary Geoise.

Teach reminds Laffitte about “the preparation”.

What could this be?

Meanwhile, Caribou, Catarina Devon and Augur arrive at Hachinosu. Pizarro grabs the ship with a giant arm formed from the island to take it directly to the meeting.

Perhaps this preparation involves Devon turning into Saturn, likely to disrupt World Government activities.

A funny thought considering that Saturn is currently deceased and replaced by Garling.

Straw Hat Separation Arc No. XXX

We return to the Elbaf ship still on the sea.

The narrator mentions that it has been two days since the Straw Hats and Giant Warrior Pirates left Egghead.

They seem to be taking their time even as they are joined by the Great Eirik; the ship of Giants Pirates.

As it turns out, everyone woke up from their drunken sleep, the Thousand Sunny and its passengers,  Luffy, Zoro, Nam!, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper, suddenly disappeared.

Those who are still present on Elbaf ship (the giants, Jinbe, Franky, Robin, Lilith, Bonney, and Brook) are in shock.

Dorry and Brogy panic while Robin thinks they have been reduced to pieces by a ship, causing Franky to also gets antsy since there are Sea Kings and giant fish nearby.

In the last page of the chapter, a silhouetted person tells Nami to wake up.

When Nami does, she points out she probably drank too much.

Nami looks around and she finds herself alone in a huge room made of what appears to be LEGO pieces.

She wears a Viking warrior outside while having a sword on her back, which makes her resemble an RPG character or one of the Elbaf giants

This mysterious person could be Luffy or one of the other missing Straw Hats.

LEGO pieces? Uh-oh, it’s a child Giant, isn’t it?

This is not going to look good.

And given the effort to kidnap the drunk Straw Hats, it might be someone with authority

Could it be the figure on the Elbaf coast in Chapter 1124, who beckoned the Straw Hats to come?

Maybe it is or even Prince Loki, the heir or ruler of Elbaf.

Hmm, is Loki still a child after 60 years?

Editor’s comment says, “What is this place…?A new adventure awaits.”

There will be NO BREAK next week.

That is three One Piece chapters in a row for Oda!
