On August 5, 2026, while publishing the 20th anniversary manga for Fairy Tail, Hiro Mashima has announced that he will be working on a new manga.

At age 49, Hiro Mashima is far from done with manga

Furthermore, Dead Rock is likely heading for its end as its second and potentially final arc, the Godfall Arc, is coming in Winter 2027, alongside a long hiatus due to the Fairy Tail 20th anniversary manga.

Since his debut in 1999, Mashima is notable for working on multiple manga simultaneously akin to Naoki Urasawa.

From his 12 serialized stories, spinoffs inclued and 12 one-shots, Rave Master (1999-2005) yielded over 23.5 million copies while his most recognized work, Fairy Tail (2006-2017, 63 volumes, multiple spinoffs) sold over 72 million copies as of February 2020, Fairy Tail Zero at 173,186 as of 2015, the sequel, 100 Years Quest sold 1.2 million copies minimum as of 2026, and Monster Hunter Orage (2008-2009, 4 volumes), a spinoff manga based on Capcom’s Monster Hunter video game franchise, sold 2 million copies, Edens Zero (2018=2024, 33 volumes) with over 1 million copies sold and Dead Rock with an estimated 50,000 copies from its 7 volumes since its debut in 2023, Mashima has sold more than 100 million copies.

Of note, most of his manga have similar designs with each other, particularly with Fairy Tail and their protagonists follow a seasonal theme.

  • Haru Glory from Rave Master (Haru means Spring)
  • Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail (Natsu means Summer)
  • Aki from Monster Soul (Aki means Autumn)
  • Shiki Granbell and Shiki Ryuho from Edens Zero and Monster Hunter Orage respectively (Shiki means Four Seasons)
  • Mafuyu from Fighting Group Mixture one-shot (Mafuyu means Mid-Winter)

However, the Dead Rock protagonist, Yakuto, follows a calendar theme as his name means “Leap” for leap year, although his name also means “blazing warrior”.

The next manga could follow the calendar theme or even go back to the seasonal theme with a “Winter” protagonist
