Hunter x Hunter: Kakin’s Sacred Treasures Explained
Learn more about the Kakin Sacred Treasures that will boost Chrollo’s Skill Hunter to its max potential!
In Chapter 406: “Regalia”, we finally learn of the treasures Chrollo and the Phantom Troupe had been planning on stealing from the Black Whale since Chapter 357: “Unfortunate: Part 2” released on June 13, 2016.
So after 8 years, we not only learn about the Kakin treasures but that they were objects we are familiar with and are essential to the literal prosperity of the Kakin Empire.
Being three objects, the Kakin Sacred Treasures are based on the Japanese imperial regalia (the sword Kusanagi no Tsurugi, the mirror Yata no Kagami, and the jewel Yasakani no Magatama).
Seed Urn
This is the object readers are more familiar with and is symbolic of the entire Succession Contest.
The Seed Urn is the centerpiece of the Succession Contest.
This was produced by the first Kakin King during the age of rival warlords of larger countries that threatened to absorb Kakin.
The King saw the “worm toxin” or Kodoku ritual where several poisonous insects would be contained for several days until the survivor absorbs all the poison, and used this as the template to Conjure the Seed Urn into existence.
The Seed Urn Ceremony grants the Kakin Princes their Guardian Spirit Beasts.
During the Seed Urn Ceremony, the Prince has to shed their blood into the lid of the pot and then they put their hand in the actual mouth figure of the pot, at which point purple smoke fumes from the urn, and a tiny female sprite dressed in Kakin traditional clothing is holding a small egg, which she inserts into the host’s mouth.
Once the egg hatches inside the Prince, they will be granted a Guardian Spirit Beast made out of Nen that will be invisible to ordinary people who do not use Nen.
Note that Chapter 349: “Worm Toxin” gave us the description of Guardian Spirit Beasts: they are Nen Beasts “created at the time of death by the powerful desire for the perpetuation of one’s descendants. possesses someone closely related to the dead, feeds on his aura, and metamorphoses into a form and ability influenced by his disposition. however since it was not his direct creation it cannot be manipulated at will.”
The Guardian Spirit Beast is not of the user’s creation but instead comes from the mix of the post-mortem Nen of the ancestors of the Kakin Royal Family, very likely the previous generations of Succession Contest participants, and the blood of the current generation that is dropped in the pot to prove their blood ties.
The Guardian Spirit Beasts are bound by two rules: they do not kill one another and they do not directly attack a person possessed by a Guardian Spirit Beast.
Some fans have speculated a connection between the Seed Urn and one of the Five Threats, specifically the first one Pap, which has the ability to make people its pets by sapping the life of its victims while filling them up with endless pleasure.
There is also a resemblance to the urn that Zepile fabricated for Gon in the Yorknew City Arc.
In a metaphorical sense, the Black Whale acts as the Seed Urn to produce the “worm toxin” from the final Prince left standing.
Lotus Anchorite
This artifact is introduced alongside the other two artifacts among the Regalia and it is a divine mummy that oversees the succession contest.
If the Seed Urn is the one that activates the Succession Contest and binds the participants to the rules, then the Lotus Anchorite is there to enforce the rules.
This is based on the “Sokushinbutsu” or Buddhist monks who starve and dehydrate themselves to death so that they can mediate in a state beyond the confines of life and death.
While we do not know exactly what it does, the process of mummification could be done to create post-mortem Nen, in which the user’s Nen grows powerful and somewhat sentient after their death.
This means that it is a literal overseer that might be responsible for the ghostly hands that killed 10th Prince Kacho in Chapter 383: “Escape”.
The Sword of Good Omens
The more mysterious component of the ritual is the Sword of Good Omens, which is granted to the winner of the Succession Contest.
This might act as the conduit for the accumulated powers of all the Guardian Spirit Beasts or the Nen of the fallen Princes, who would be buried in the Tree of Kakin alongside Nasubi (if that is the intended effect, that is).
The Great Tree of Kakin
While the true nature of the Kakin Regalia are kept a secret, there is an even greater secret.
In Chapter 363: “Nen Beast”, Benjamin swears before his father King Nasubi to protect the Great Tree of Kakin and prune the diseased branches (his siblings).
This could be taken as referring to the Royal Family
However in Chapter 371: “Mission”, the Great Tree of Kakin is revealed to be a hidden room containing fourteen intricate coffins.
The head of every coffin is light whenever it is occupied by a deceased Prince, with Nasubi treating them as foundations for the Great Tree of Kakin.
There is speculation that this “Great Tree” will be the final stage of the Succession Contest ritual that will gather the poison or blood of the deceased Princes to create one final Guardian Spirit Beast, which could be similar to Nasubi’s own.
