Maru and Tsurugi Become Friends. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 3 Spoilers!
A man-eating tiger brings humans and aliens to a closer understanding. Can Tsurugi’s newfound friendship with Maru help prevent war?

In the second Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapter, Usami encounters the leader of the Simurians meanwhile the Okkotsu siblings witness the appearance of the Simurian mothership and Cross switches places with Maru without Tsurugi noticing it.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 3 is titled, “Swimming in the Forest.”
This chapter has 22 pages.
The chapter begins with Usami briefing the Okkotsu siblings and Maru about the case of a man-eating shark…swimming through the forest in Gifu.
Dandadan and Jujutsu Kaisen seem to have a thing for flying sharks. Must be the Junji Ito influence.
As they all sit together in a bullet train, Tsurugi remembers “Maru’s” sudden change in disposition.
Tsurugi brings up how cursed spirits normally only appear in Tokyo, with Maru not knowing what Cursed Spirits, which confuses Tsurugi as it seems like now Maru is open to talking to him.
Yuka explains to Maru that humans in Japan emit cursed energy and that energy accumulates into Cursed Spirits, which are the basis for yokai and other supernatural phenomena.
For the past decades since the Culling Games, Tokyo has been the only exclusive area for curses, as stated in Chapter 270: “The End of the Dream”, since the capital was kept off-limits due to the spread of Kenjaku’s Cursed Spirits.
Tsurugi also connects the arrival of the Simurian aliens on Earth to the rise of Cursed Spirits outside Tokyo, implying that the man-eating monster the trio are after might be an alien.
Maru still stays mum over his true nature but Yuka trusts that Maru is a good person.
As the trio arrive to the scene, they confirm that there were two victims and three witnesses to the scene of the shark emerging where there was no nearby source of water.
At a farmhouse, they meet one of the witnesses, an old man with presbyopia who says it was a night without moonlight that the attack took place.
According to the autopsy, the bite marks on the body seem a little different from those of the parents of the victim.
As the trio walk into the forest, Tsurugi suspects this event is part of the Simurian’s invasion but an infuriated Maru insists that they are intervening precisely to avoid an invasion.
Maru and Tsurugi begin arguing, with Maru asking if humans have enough reason and morality to talk about aliens while Tsurugi says that anyone who comes uninvited into someone’s home should not have a lot to say.
In particular, Tsurugi chastised Maru for not intervening with his powers earlier against the kidnapper, saying that it’s wrong to put orders above the life of a child.
Suddenly, the boys spot the floating shark near them.
Tsurugi attempts to bring out his Cursed Too Honoyagil but Maru warns it could set off a wildfire as its sparks could cover the blade in flames and thus spread through the forest.
Tsurugi says that is a fair point.
While Tsurugi argues about how useless Maru is, Maru gets dragged by the shark.
Except it was not a shark but a man dressed up in a shark costume.
Maru says he is an old man but the man clarifies that he is not old and asks what a pair of Jujutsu High students are doing here.
The boys are surprised that this man knows they are sorcerers.
The man introduces himself as Nagata, a graduate from Jujutsu High but he clarifies he is no man eater, although Tsuguri notes that Nagata just eating alcohol and snacks] was a problem in itself.
Nagata explains that he is after a man-eating tiger named Toranosuke.
About 25 years ago, a pair of tigers was brought in by illegal foreign traders and settled in the mountains of Gifu and Toranosuke was their grandchild.
Even a cub, Toranosuke was a clever tiger, such that the tiger and Nagata were able to understand what the other wanted to say even without gesture, all by just looking into each other’s eyes.
Recently, the mega-solar plant near the mountain summit had reached the end of its lifespan and started flowing, its heat causing the river to dry up and the revival of the supernatural in the area.
Because of the river drying up, the ecosystem collapsed and Toranosuke looked for water sources and prey, so he ended up in the village, attacking the villagers.
Tsurugi also wishes to help Nagata but finds the situation complicated for a Jujutsu sorcerer.
Nagata says he does not want to kill Toranosuke but save him.
Tsurugi tells Nagata that relying on his guts will not help the victims or their families but then Nagata takes off, revealing his sense of smell was specialized for tracking blood.
He had lowered the barrier to find the tiger, which climbs up on top of a tree branch to pounce on him but Tsurugi charges towards the tiger to save the shark-man.
We see memories of a much younger Nagata taking care of Toranosuke as a cub, telling the cub, who had lost his parents, that loneliness is not all bad as it could make someone stronger.
Nagata tells the cub that when he feels all alone, he can always go to him.
This transitions to the present as Nagata apologizes for stopping him but at least the tiger will not feel any pain.
So Tsurugi takes out the tiger and the three men talk.
Nagata apologizes for making Tsurugi do such a thing but Tsurugi says it is his job.
Maru finally opens up about his job to gather information to determine whether or not humans and aliens can coexist and shares about his technique, which is something shared with his twin brother, therefore it is prohibited except for emergencies.
It seems Tsurugi now has an idea of why the other Maru he met sounded different.
Maru warns that if he used his power in a big way, it will be passed to his younger brother and he worried that if he used his power, Maru thought it would worsen humans’ impression of the aliens.
Tsurugi asks if it was okay to share this secret and Maru tells Tsurugi to hide this from everyone.
This shows two things: that Maru sees Tsurugi’s true character as a kind-hearted man and Maru in turns wants that he genuinely wants to get along with him.
Here we see the moral of the story: the tiger and the aliens are the same: able to communicate with humans in spite of coming from completely different worlds and understanding of things.
Suddenly, the pair spot a tiger cub and Tsurugi hands it over to Nagata, telling him that this cub’s future is uncertain so he should look after it.
The same goes for humans and aliens, Tsurugi and Maru, showing that Tsurugi has overcome his own prejudices and wants to prevent a future where friends like Nagata and Toranosuke hurt each other.
This cub might also be Toranosuke’s child since there might be no other tigers around.
The chapter ends with Yuka still at the old parents’ place, with these folks looking like Nagata’s parents.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 4 will be released on September 29, 2025.
