Fungus and Iron Ends Next Week
As Fungus and Iron’s manga is set to end within the week, the anime reveals more details, to the horror of familiar anime fans.
On September 3, 2026, we got a key visual for the upcoming Fungus and Iron anime adaptation, with a back shot of the protagonist Dante.
At the same time, it is confirmed that we will be getting the final chapter on September 9th in the upcoming monthly Bessatsu Shonen Magazine issue, the same magazine as Attack on Titan, which coincidentally started on September 9, 2009.
This had been announced on April 18th, with the series rounding up to 10 volumes and 55 monthly chapters.
Anime Adaptation Details
Animation Studio: Yokohama Animation Lab
Anime Director: Keitarou Motonaga
Yokohama Animation Lab and Motonaga were both responsible for the Kingdoms of Ruin (2023) adaptation, which garnered much backlash due to its inconsistent visual quality, bad CGI usage and the usual production crunch typical of the animation industry.
Having worked in the industry for decades, Motonaga established himself as a mainstay through Toei’s Digimon Adventure tri, a six-part film series (2015–2018),
However, as Motonaga’s recent work was the much-reviled “The Beginning After the End” anime adaptation (2025), a lot of fans remark how Fungus and Iron could share the same fate.
Some fans clarify, however, that Motonaga is not inherently unskilled but that he lacks the network of animators and technical expertise to make the project stand out from the original material it replicates.
We see Motonaga at his best with Katanagatari (2010) and Jormugand (2012).
About Fungus and Iron
Fungus and Iron was written for Kodansha’s monthly magazine, Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, the same magazine as Attack on Titan, where Katayama once worked as Isayama’s assistant.
This tells the story of Dante, a human who has escaped the control of the Amigasa mushroom that rules the world and controls human brains, and joins the rebel group Ether.
