Is this the Next Attack on Titan? Fungus and Iron Anime Coming
Has a worthy successor to Attack on Titan been found? With the right animation team and unique vision, Fungus and Iron could potentially lead anime to a new era.
Since its manga ending in 2021 and anime conclusion in 2023, many anime fans have been eager for a proper successor to the legendary Attack on Titan
Fungus and Iron is one such series, written by Ayaka Katayama, former assistant to Hajime Isayama, who would go on to recommend the series to his audience when it was first released.
On March 4, 2026, this series was announced to have an anime in production.
Further details have not been laid out.
Ayaka Katayama comments:

When I first heard about it, I could hardly believe it. Now that the announcement has finally been made, I’m still savoring the joy of realizing it’s truly happening. The scripts and various visuals I’ve already received have been created with great care and sincerity toward the world of Fungus and Iron. I’m truly grateful to everyone involved in the anime production.
Supervising the anime has been exciting every time! And the reason I’ve been given this wonderful opportunity is thanks to all the readers who have supported the series. I’m looking forward to seeing Dante and the others come to life in motion, and to discovering how this slightly mysterious world will be portrayed in anime. I’ll be enjoying it together with viewers as a fan as well. Please look forward to it!”
First released on March 9, 2021, Fungus and Iron was written for Kodansha’s monthly magazine, Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, the same magazine as Attack on Titan, where Katayama once worked as Isayama’s assistant.
The series has seen 9 volumes and 48 chapters.
This tells the story of Dante, a human who has escaped the control of the Amigasa mushroom that rules the world and controls human brains, and joins the rebel group Ether.
The series is set to end midway this year with Volume 10.
