Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 34 is titled, “Baby, Hold Your Hand”.

This episode will adapt the rest of Chapter 635: “Hooded Enigma” up until the start of Chapter 640: “Baby, Hold Your Hand 3 (Mad Lullaby no.7)”, meaning that this week’s episode will adapt over 5 chapters of content unlike the 2-chapter adaptation of last episode.

With this episode, Bleach is an anime that has reached a total of 400 episodes.

Preview Images

The preview images show Mayuri’s delighted face as he begins his fight with Pernida, who is also shown.

Kenpachi looks excitedly at the Quincy and Nemu is just there to witness, not taking action just yet.

These show that the episode will be adapting the manga content faithfully and with fewer additions than previous ones.

Staff List

Script: Masaki Hiramatsu
Storyboard: Atsushi Wakabayashi
Director: Takahiro Otsuka
Animation Directors: Ayako Sato, Rina Suzuki, Haru Watanabe
Chief Animation Director: Michio Hasegawa

We have quite a stacked staff as well here

Atsushi Wakabayashi is quite an established industry name, responsible for a lot of work in the Naruto franchise, primarily in the original Naruto anime via episodes 30, 71, and 133, as not only directory and storyboarder but also the animation director and among the key animators in the same episodes he directs and storyboards.

These three episodes contain some of the most iconic animated moments of the original series.

Episode 30, “The Sharingan Revived: Dragon-Flame Jutsu!” is where Sasuke fights against a disguised Orochimaru during the Chunin Exams 2nd test in the Forest of Death.

Episode 71, “An Unrivaled Match: Hokage Battle Royale!” features the start of the Third Hokage’s final battle against Orochimaru, featuring some stunning animation that could very well be Wakabayashi’s calling card.

Episode 133, “A Plea from a Friend”, contains the final stretch of Naruto vs Sasuke’s first battle in the Final Valley, featuring strong animation quality.

This would also continue in his role in Naruto Shippuden as episode director of the famous or infamous Episode 167: “Chibaku Tensei”, notable for its varied qualities of animation.

In the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations series, he acts as storyboarder for 29 episodes, beginning with Episode 110: “The Steam Ninja Scrolls: The Resurrection Hot Springs!” until Episode 288: “Captives” (Code Arc).

In short, Wakabayashi is notable for performing the role of either director or storyboarder alongside being part of the animation process as either an animation director, or in this case, as a key animator.

Under such a legendary name, we will be seeing some of the most insane animation that Bleach in general, in its 20 year run, has to offer.

For Bleach, he has storyboarded Episode 18: “Rages at Ringside” and Episode 23: “Marching Out The ZOMBIES 2” while also working as Episode 18’s action and effects animation director.

Episode 23 is also a Mayuri episode, so it aligns with how he is the storyboarder for this episode.

Meanwhile, Takahiro Otsuka is the director of Episode 24: “Too Early to Win, Too Late to Know”.

The following will be the key animators involved in the episode:

As mentioned earlier, the episode storyboarder, Atsushi Wakabayashi, was involved in the Naruto franchise, particularly the iconic sword fight between Orochimaru and the Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, Naruto awakening Version 1 in his fight against Sasuke in Episode 133, and Mask de Masculine’s fight against Kensei Muguruma in Bleach TYBW Episode 18.

What to Expect

This will be the first showing of chief director Tomohisa Taguchi and incumbent series director Hiramatsu’s vision for the Cour 3 battles, where they noted in an interview how they will “increase the realism and tension of the siege”.

The order of fights will be scattered and mixed between Mayuri and Shunsui’s fights, as well as battles like Haschwalth vs Bazz-B, Askin vs Ichigo’s group and Gerard vs the Gotei 13 and Vizards.

The start of Chapter 635, which will continue to be adapted here, is Liltotto and Giselle vs Yhwach, but this will definitely be rearranged to a later episode, though it is not confirmed to be the next one or at the end of the cour.

Pernida’s Voice Actor

Since July 13, 2024, it was confirmed that Bin Shimada, the voice of Broly from the Dragon Ball franchise, will provide the voice of Pernida Parnkgjas.

This will be the first time we hear the character’s voice as Pernida’s primary “story arc” revolves around him acquiring more free will and independent thought, including the ability to speak.

In a way, the choice for voice actor is perfect considering Broly’s evolution of speech in both Broly movies is similar.

Pernida, the Left Arm of the Soul King

The Powers of Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War's Soul King Body Parts, Explained

In Episode 24, we learn that the Almighty was sealed by Ichibe Hyousube through the power of the Left Arm of the Soul King.

Throughout the anime, we saw how the Soul King was mutilated and his body parts scattered across the Bleach verse.

There are hints in the anime showing which characters might possess these parts.

In the opening, we see Nemu and Mayuri face off against the Left Arm of the Soul King who, unlike Mimihagi, has combat capabilities.

Yhwach never actually empowered Pernida through a Schrift but instead formally labeled the Soul King power with a Schrift name, C: The Compulsory and its ability to control objects and people through its movable nerves.

The leakers have also confirmed that Pernida’s Left Arm form will be CGI but not for all scenes.

Although Cour 1’s average CGI for the Hollows and other scenes, such as Yamamoto’s Bankai skeletons and the CGI bugs from As Nodt’s “The Fear” visions, with the 3D scenery for Mimihagi and environments such as the Soul King Palace and Wahrwelt, we might see improvement in individual CG characters.

Kenpachi Folds, Mayuri Steps Up

kenpachi loses arm

When charging towards Pernida, Kenpachi’s right arm gets twisted but Pernida was able to maim him enough to force Mayuri to inject him with a sedative and have him placed in a pod, wherein Mayuri takes over the fight.

Bleach author Tite Kubo also made a comment about the recording for this episode with regards to the two gadgets Mayuri used early in the fight, the “Strange Umbrella and the “Human-Faced String”, although we will likely learn the names of these gadgets soon enough.

Modified Bankai: Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō: Matai Fukuin Shōtai

We also witness Mayuri activate his Modified Bankai: Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō: Matai Fukuin Shōtai, a Bankai factory in essence.

Mayuri has his Bankai create a Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō with visible veins across its body, which Mayuri reveals is a version with nerves on the surface of its body.

The episode will end at the start of Chapter 640 as Mayuri laughs maniacally after his Modified Bankai gives birth to a new Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō with 70,000 layers of skin to overcome Pernida’s nerve infiltration and swallow the Left Arm whole.

Next Episode Poem: Shunsui Kyouraku

Image

For the next episode, we will get a poem from Head Captain of the Gotei 13, Shunsui Kyouraku.

Apparently the poem seems to be the line: “You’ll die” from Chapter 645 but it could also be that the leakers have yet to know or do not intend to reveal the exact poem just yet.

For the first time, Kyouraku will have his own “volume cover” poem as he and Ukitake are the only main Gotei 13 Captains in the entire series without a volume cover or associated poem.

The volume where Kyouraku’s fight against Lille Barro takes place has Uryu Ishida as the volume cover character instead, so this is quite overdue for one of the most beloved captains of the series.

In another surprising move, we will be shifting to the next battle after the preliminary stage of “Baby, Hold Your Hand”

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 35 will be titled, “Don’t Chase a Shadow” and will likely adapt the end of Chapter 644: “Baby, Hold Your Hand 7 [Never Ending My Dream]” and Chapters 645, where the episode title is from, up to Chapter 647: “The Theater Suicide”.

This is because when we last left the main Gotei 13 group, they were being scattered by Lille Barro’s sniping.

Within the next episode, we will see Kyouraku’s intervention, which would also pave the way for the start of the fight with Gerard Valkyrie.

We could also see here the point where the majority of the Gotei manage to take care of Gerard Valkyrie in this preliminary stage.

There is a chance this could lead into the remainder of “Baby: Hold Your Hand” or possibly initiate Shunsui’s Bankai, indicating that Lille might be the first of the Schutzstaffel to be defeated instead of Pernida, the Left Arm of the Soul King.

Additionally, this post indicates that the sequence of poems will be as follows:

Episode 35: “Don’t Chase a Shadow” (Shunsui Kyouraku)

Episode 36: Baby, Hold Your Hand finale (Nemu Kurotsuchi, likely the Volume 71 poem)

Episode 37: “The Theater Suicide” (Lille Barro)

Of the Schutzstaffel, Lille is the only one to receive a poem in the anime even while Askin Nakk Le Vaar had his own poem in Volume 68 that has yet to be used.

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 35 will be titled, “Don’t Chase a Shadow” will be released on November 30, 2024.
