KUBO SAVED THE BLEACH FINAL BATTLE! Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 49 Review!
Kubo did the unthinkable, turning an individual victory into a collective effort, where Three Worlds, six hearts beat as one, ending with Ichigo, the Protector, slaying the Moon of Yhwach
In the previous Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War episode, after subduing Aizen, Yhwach appears in all Three Worlds, beginning to merge them into his Black Domain for the battle to end all battles.
Chapters Adapted
Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 49 is titled, “The Blade”.
This episode adapts the last 10 pages of Chatper 684: “The Blade”.
Just like Episode 45: “Defend You” and Episode 47: “The End 2”, majority of the episode will be anime-original, changing the content it adapts to expand on characters
The Three-World Final Battle
The episode starts with Yhwach covering Karakura Town, Seireitei and Hueco Mundo with his Black Reiatsu, turning them into Black Domains surrounded by eyes, similar to As Nodt’s Vollstandig.
However, the Three Worlds are not completely defenseless.
In Hueco Mundo, Grimmjow, Tier Harribel and Nel are all there, with Grimmjow making the first move against Yhwach, thinking if he could take down the final boss, he can have his date, I mean fight, with Ichigo.
In the World of the Living, the remaining four Gotei 13 captains that can fight: Soi-Fon, Byakuya, Toshiro Hitsugaya, who is now in his young form, and Shunsui, lead the Shinigami fodder and the spiritually aware humans like Tatsuki, against Yhwach and his infinite army of eyeball monsters.
But in Soul Society, Ichigo and Uryu are the last hope they got.
Eryone in the Three Worlds panicking as the eyeball monsters form from the branches of Yhwach’s Black Reiatsu trees that are aiming to devour the skies of each realm.
If Yhwach completely covers the Three Worlds in darkness, it is all over.
Throughout the episode, we see the number go up, putting everyone and us the fans to a panic because Yhwach COULD EASILY WIN.
The episode starts with the number at 75% and it could only go up from there.
No way are four Captains, two Arrancars and the last two Quincy enough to stop the God of Bleach.
Callback to Quincy Archer Hates You and Karneades~Back to Back

In Soul Society, Ichigo has a hard time blocking Yhwach’s Cero-like lasers, which makes Uryu remember the one time he fought Ichigo and accidentally brought a Menos Grande to Karakura Town.
During that fight, Uryu noticed that Ichigo’s out of control Reiatsu was acting like a magnet to nearby Reishi, OUR FIRST HINT OUR BOI WAS A QUINCY TOO
That’s where we get the funny scene of Uryu wearing Ichigo’s giant Zanpakuto on the top of his head like it was some sort of giant laser cannon.
And that inspired Uryu’s plan, to have Ichigo fire his biggest Getsuga Tensho at Uryu himself.
With Uryu being the better Quincy obviously, he turned Ichigo’s True Bankai Getsuga Tensho in a GIANT YELLOW QUINCY ARROW, an arrow with Shinigami and Quincy Reiatsu combined, to break Yhwach’s shield and create a clear path for Ichigo to cut Yhwach in half.
In Episode 47, Uryu was actually able to pull off an even bigger arrow the size of a whole city against Yhwach, using the dense Reishi of the Soul King Palace, to push down Soken’s Hogyoku bomb into the Distortion.
Yes, Uryu’s grandpa was able to make a nuke that works like a Hogyoku, made of different souls to cause imbalance.
Of course, Yhwach tried to erase it with the Almighty but Uryu then said “Nuh uh” and used Antithesis to swap it with a future where the arrow was never erased, landing the shot.
Uryu reached his peak as a Quincy by fusing Ichigo’s hybrid Reiatsu for a much weaker but still effective move. It’s just right now, he’s just nerfed by Yhwach’s Black Domain.
Byakuya’s Second Canonical Shukei: Hakuteiken

In the World of the Living, the Captains are all fighting desperately against eyeball monsters that keep regenerating and spreading out their pieces.
With Soi Fon’s Shunko, she breezes through the trees and this gives Byakuya an opening to use his strongest attack, Shukei: Hakuteiken and this is a BIG DEAL.
Shukei uses all of Byakuya’s Senkei blades into an overwhelming mass of Reiatsu, a one-shot attack and Byakuya only uses Senkei and Hakuteiken if he is 100% locked in to kill someone, with only two people before receiving that treatment, like Ichigo himself.
Meanwhile in Hueco Mundo, Harriel and Grimmjow kept on fighting, with Harribel clearing the way with Cascada so that Grimmjow could use his strongest move, Desgarron, to turn Yhwach into a Renji meat pie (Bankai huh I like that word scene).
We are seeing three of the strongest attacks and they do JACKSHIT.
Yhwach just regenerates and stabs everyone with Black Reiatsu or is blasted by the eyeballs.
Yhwach reaches out for the sky, recalling
However, the Captains refuse to give up.
Uryu shows Ichigo the Still Silver arrowhead made from the blood clot on his mother’s heart, a byproduct of Yhwach’s Auswahlen.
Uryu was traumatized by the sight of his father Ryuken operating on the dead body of his own wife, which is what made them distant in the first place.
But this is the very thing designed to bring Yhwach down.
If the Still Silver makes contact with Yhwach’s blood, for a brief instant, Yhwach loses all of his powers.
However, Uryu knows they need the right opening, where Yhwach has no Black Reiatsu covering him.
Uryu uses Rasontengai to force his weakened body to keep up with Ichigo.
Meanwhile, thanks to Yukio’s Fullbring, Invaders Must Die, Ganju watches Ichigo fight.
In the world of the Living, Byakuya and Toshiro’s Bankai serve as a taxi for them, Shunsui, Soi-Fon to ride through the end of the world.
But the darkness is nearly at 99%.

Then Nel comes up with a surprising move.
She tells Pesche and Dondochakka to launch her up to the canopy…to plug the hole with her tiny little head.
At the same time, Ganju jumps at the very last second and uses his Seppa technique to push the hole open.

And in the World of the Living, somehow, Tetsuzaemon Iba and Squad 7 Captain Sajin Komamura, who got turned into a dog as a price for revenge for Yamamoto, come in and attack.
And Iba finally reveals his Shikai to the entire world, which just unleashes waves of Reiatsu to push back against Yhwach’s darkness.
No name, nothing.
That’s it.
We have a plumbing squad made up of the biggest bums of the series and they are the final line of defense.
Plus in the Soul King Palace, Ginjo pulls only one slash as his contribution to the team while Orihime is giving 1000% to shield Rukia and Chad from the Black Reiatsu.
Kubo, what are you cooking?
But this gives everyone time to keep fighting.

And let’s not sleep on dog Komamura because he might be tougher than his original form.
Komamura is kind of a joke, his Bankai is a giant target practice since whatever happens to his Bankai happens to his body too but he really got that dog in him and kept fighting against Yhwach’s black Reiatsu, biting it off over and over even when he was stabbed.
But things are not looking good for Team Hueco Mundo as Harribel and Grimmjow are both DOWN for the count.
Desperate and clearly out of moves, Tier Harribel tells Grimmjow to eat her.
Tier Harribel is Espada No 3. Representing Sacrifice.
Just like Grimmjow’s Fraccion did.
This was a gasp of defeat from a Vasto Lorde, the strongest of the Hollows
The Aspect of Sacrifice is asking the Aspect of Destruction to use her power so that Grimmjow’s Destruction wins over Yhwach’s.
Which is exactly why Grimmjow refused to listen to her, powering through with the power of tenacity, not even giving a damn when he lost his right arm.
Inspired by Ichigo’s resistance, Akon decides to use the Hollows he learned into the Rukon district as a weapon against Yhwach.
For the past few episodes, Squad 12 has been trying to stop the Distortion, so Akon came up with the brilliant idea of bringing a ton of Hollows into the Soul Society to balance the number of souls in each world.
Now he is using those Hollows that are slowly being destroyed by Yhwach’s Reiatsu one by one, to power up Mayuri’s Reishi Amplifier, creating a laser beam of amplified Hollow energy to poison Yhwach.
But Yhwach finally notices the science project and decides class is suspended.
Before Squad 12 gets utterly wasted, we get a big surprise, a portal from Yukio’s Fullbring, Invaderz Must Die, appears in mid-air, bringing out CHAD HIMSELF.
His final act for the series is to punch EVEN MORE EYEBALL MONSTERS but this time, he actually protected everyone’s last hope, as is the purpose of his Fullbring.
Yukio also comes to help, being the Tony Stark of Bleach and helps improve the Reishi amplification cannon, guiding the Hollow Reiatsu blast to reach Yhwach.
Crazy how Yukio did more to help Ichigo save the universe than fricking Ginjo, his own predecessor as Substitute Soul Reaper, potential Soul King candidate my ass.
But nahhh that still did nothing and everyone was swallowed up in Black Reiatsu anyway.
Yhwach finally won,
He is about to complete the Merger, doing what Kenjaku, and all those bum villains in every anime failed to do.
The universe became a sea of blood just like his poem said it would be.
That’s until Uryu FIRES the Still Silver Arrow and SHUT DOWN YHWACH’S POWERS
Uryu waited for the exact moment Yhwach let his guard down
Exactly like what happened in the manga.
But Kubo does something that flips the shonen script over its head.
Because this is not just the MC’s victory.
It belongs to everyone.
Grimmjow gets close and BITES YHWACH, triggering his Blut Vene while Shunsui, trapped in Black Reiatsu, next to Yhwach, says “Tag, you’re it”, activating Mimihagi.
So what’s happening here?
Shunsui’s Endgame

Everything about this moment has to do with Episode 47, aka the episode where Uryu and Shunsui created the Alliance of Three Worlds to beat Yhwach.
In the manga, Uryu’s plan to blow up Warhwelt was a nothingburger move but here, it was an intricate chain of his and other people’s plans working in harmony.
We already know Shunsui had a big plan against Yhwach ever since Episode 47.
Because Mimihagi actually shared a portion of its power to Shunsui. It was just living on his hand so he could keep in touch with his bro for the time he was gonna dip for good.
This is also part of a gamble Ukitake had since he was gonna die anyway, a way to help stop Yhwach after he died, although he said it is as unlikely as getting a date with Mommy Unohana.
But more importantly, Shunsui is actually cooking up something big, because when Yhwach used his final Auswahlen to suck up Gerard and the Lille Barro chicken clones, Shunsui sneaks in Mimihagi as well.
Thanks to the Toshiro Ice Taxi, Shunsui sees his opening and Soi Fon FINALLY, FINALLY MAKES HER BANKAI USEFUL FOR ONCE.

We even get character development for Soi Fon as she feels grateful for having such a Bankai, which, together with Toshiro’s ice, propel Shunsui towards Yhwach, mowing through the thickest Black Reiatsu Yhwach pulls out.
And that’s when Shunsui makes his cheekiest move, when he plays tag with Yhwach and activates Mimihagi, causing him to unravel.
Shunsui’s Shikai turns child’s games to reality, each of them being a form of tag.
Mimihagi’s form is that of a shadow, exactly like Shunsui’s Kageoni and since Shunsui has a dual Zanpakuto like his bestie Ukitake, he has the perfect affinity for the Right Arm of the Soul King.
That’s why Kubo wrote Ukitake’s backstory in Cour 3, showing Shunsui in Mimihagi’s shrine, where Shunsui hypothesizes about the Arms of the Soul King and their powers.
Because he too became a vessel of sorts for Mimihagi.
So when Yhwach noticed Mimihagi and called it the Soul King’s arm, Shunsui said its “our right arm”, his and Ukitake’s.
Aside from Uryu and Orihime, Ukitake had the biggest glow-up in the Thousand Year Blood War anime.
He went from the guy who held the world for 5 minutes and dipped to the LEGEND responsible for Yhwach’s final defeat, alongside Uryu and…KISUKE URAHARA??
Kisuke Urahara’s LAST LAUGH

That’s right, the biggest surprise factor was Kisuke Urahara actually being involved in Yhwach’s final downfall.
He got one cameo this episode after being safely put somewhere in Warhwelt, away from Orihime and Rukia’s group.
And this explains why he needed Grimmjow to kill Askin Nakk Le Varr.
Out of all the Espada remaining, Grimmjow was clearly the strongest, yes stronger than the undisputed King of Hueco Mundo Tier Harribel.
Grimmjow was able to avoid Yhwach’s radar and Urahara clearly did his research.
Grimmjow gained his Vasto Lorde status from devouring his Fraccion and he had the tenacity to evolve to new heights.
His fights with Ichigo might have even boosted his powers to the point that in the light novels, years after the end of Bleach, Kenpachi wanted to fight him so badly because he was stronger than Nnoitra.
His will as a king and his Resurreccion’s razor sharpness

In the light novel, Can’t Fear Your Own World, Grimmjow gained immunity to poisons thanks to his exposure to Askin’s Deathdealing Schrift, yes even Mayuri’s random concoctions do nothing to Grimmjow.
This might have something to do with his unique Reiatsu or perhaps something fundamental Urahara unlocked within Grimmjow.
He was the one who healed Grimmjow with the vaccine he gave Yoruichi but what if, like with the fight against Aizen, he loaded something else into the anti-Deathdealing vaccine specifically for Grimmjow.
Not to mention that Urahara was with Ukitake, so maybe he acquired a sample of Mimihagi while no one was looking.
After all, Urahara saw the Soul King long before the Thousand Year Blood War or Aizen’s war happened.
This leads us to the episode, where Grimmjow bites down on Yhwach, causing his body to produce Blut Vene just like what happened when he yoinked Askin’s heart.
We don’t really get an explanation but this moment could also tie back to Urahara’s solution against the Bankai stealing Medallion.
He asked if Quincies can steal Bankai, can they do the same to Resurreccion?
Except Hollow Reiatsu is toxic to Quincy.
Which led to him creating the Hollowfication pills that Hollowfied the Bankai.
Now, Yhwach never stole any Resurreccion but what if Urahara found a way to FORCE Yhwach to steal it.
So Grimmjow’s bite transmitted Pantera into Yhwach, which conflicted with his Quincy soul, resulting in even more damage that separated Yhwach from his powers.
This was more potent than Akon’s Hollow-powered blast in Seiretei, which did shave off Yhwach’s Black Reiatsu but really did
Maybe that was the hint all along.
The whole point of the Three Worlds having three different countermeasures was to fully kill Yhwach.
Mimihagi, Urahara’s Poison and Uryu’s Still Silver Arrow all needed to momentarily halt the Almighty in every World, leaving Yhwach defenseless and with only his raw Reiatsu to use.
From behind Grimmjow, Nel’s Fraccion charge in, helping Grimmjow push his Zanpakuto into Yhwach.
Shunsui pulls out one more shadow trick with Kageoni, bringing out Ryonosuke Yuki.
A simple Soul Reaper who was just recently assigned two weeks ago to Karakura Town in the very first episode of the Thousand Year Blood War anime.
His Asauchi dealt the final blow to Yhwach in Karakura Town.
But those were nothing compared to Ichigo, who charges in with Tensa Zangetsu.
Yhwach tries to break his True Bankai one more time but instead, we see the sheath.
In Klub Outside, Kubo explains that a true Zanpakuto is made of a sword and sheathe.
Notice how Ichigo’s original Shikai lacked a sheath, only those bandages.
The outer layer of Ichigo’s Bankai was the small blade, representing Old Man Zangetsu.
So essentially, Yhwach destroyed himself here preemptively.
By removing the sheath, only the Blade is left, the real Zangetsu, which looks exactly like his original Shikai.
The Key Visual Fulfilled?

In a funny way, this fulfills the key visual, which is also a callback to Ichigo’s Bankai training.
Only the Real Zangetsu can cut Zangetsu down and that’s exactly what happened.
It wasn’t Blood Chains Ichigo or even the complete Bankai.
It was just the Blade in its purest form
The one in the dream Haschwalth showed Yhwach at the very start of Cour 4.
The fact Yhwach only dismissed this as a dream proved to be his downfall, the same way Yhwach was easily fooled by Aizen’s Kyoka Suigetsu, not once but twice, every single time.
That’s gotta be the most poetic usage of a Zanpakuto.
The Zan part of the Zanpakuto name means “Slayer” and “getsu” is the moon.
Yhwach is the Moon, representing Fate, and he is being slain by the Moon Slayer.
And as Ichigo cuts down Yhwach, we see his life flash before his eyes.
Ichigo did more than cut through Yhwach’s body and Reiatsu.
He was cutting down every single life that sustained Yhwach.
In a way, he really was cutting fate.
The fate of every Quincy to be Yhwach’s food.
The fate of every living being to return to the Primordial Chaos.
And most of all, the fate of a life full of fear.
Yhwach’s Death

This has to be the best ending a shonen final boss can ever get.
And his fear of death makes perfect sense.
Not only because he was born without any senses and needing the souls of Quincy to survive but because of such a condition, it is implied Yhwach spent probably a million years being reincarnated, only to die because there were not enough Quincy who he could share his soul with and thus grow.
Imagine the madness that would create, a baby with the self-awareness of a fallen god living and dying for thousands of cycles until 1,200 years ago, he finally finds enough people to keep him alive, giving him the courage to believe and live for the first time.
He is not just evil Jesus or an evil Messiah.
He was a Messiah who kept dying and rising again but the Resurrection cemented his mad pursuit of returning the world to the Primordial Chaos
The anime expanded on his background so well: from him existing in the Primordial Sea alongside his father, the Soul King, witnessing his mutilation, to his meeting with Ichibei, where he finally regained his full memories of his banishment and at the same time losing the Almighty, the very reason why Yamamoto’s Bankai was able to utterly destroy him but not totally end him.
We even get the setup for his goals earlier too as Yhwach expresses how he hears the cries and fears of his people every single day.
The very thing that is keeping him alive is the very thing that motivates him to end the cycle of life and death.
Yhwach’s cruelty was a product of the Original Sin, enforcing a balance of souls that did the Quincy no favors and mandated a sacrifice from Yhwach’s father.
We see it in the anime, as Ichigo’s slash is shown alongside Yhwach’s origin as the baby that saved the Quincy race from extinction.
The episode before, we got one final poem out of Yhwach and it just perfectly encapsulated his character so well
“If you want to be saved, believe in yourself. If you believe in yourself, those who believe so will be saved.”
But this reads so much like something Old Man Zangetsu would say.
To trust in your own sword.
Rather than Tosen’s advice to Hisagi, to “fear your own sword”, it was courage that saved the world.
The courage to believe in yourself.
Something Ichigo had to turn in order to overcome his grief and self-loathing over the death of his mother.
Yhwach was responsible for taking away his mom but he also gave him the power to stop him.
At first, Zangetsu was a sheath, holding Ichigo back from his full potential to protect him
But through Ichigo’s example, Zangetsu was reminded of the same lesson he taught Ichigo, to believe in himself, so those who believe in him will also be saved.
Ichigo rewrote Bleach history, not by becoming the next Soul King to continue the Balance of Souls, but by being Ichigo, he who protects with the Moon Slayer in hand.
And he did not rewrite it alone.
Yhwach used the lives of Quincy to keep himself alive, believing that ultimately he was the one and only life that truly mattered.
It is the collective effort of every race, every person, with the courage to live, that brought down the Soul King who wanted to end the world.
Six Hearts Will Beat as One.
