A Song of Ice and Fire! Gray Fullbuster Discovers His FULL POTENTIAL with BURNING ICE! Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapters 181 and 182 Review!

In the previous Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest chapter, Wendy helps Gray find Viernes’ Lacrima, setting up the final stage of their battle.

Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Chapter 181 is titled, “The Potential of Ice”.

Released on April 2, 2025, this chapter has 19 pages.

The cover page features Lyon Vastia, Gray Fullbuster’s rival, wearing a regal, prince-like attire, planting his sword on the ground while standing in front of a castle while snow falls.

Selene is freed and immediately recognizes Wendy as “Haku’s bride”, which Wendy firmly denies.

However, Selene is no help in the fight against Viernes, having lost most of her power.

Viernes traps Selene and Wendy within a barrier using Magic Alchemy, converting the air into magic power, in order to block the flow of magic and thus prevent the women from interfering in this man’s fight.

With Wendy unable to reach Viernes, Gray takes care of business, using his Ice Devil’s Zeroth Long Sword, which does damage to Viernes since he does not know this magic.

Except now he does, having adapted throughout their fight.

Viernes, as a Metal Dragon, can now cancel all magic.

However, Gray is frustrated, maybe even jealous.

Natsu’s fire was able to defeat Viernes yet his ice could not.

However, Gray taps into the limitless possibilities of Molding Magic, by making his ice burn.

This seems to do the trick, except once again Viernes is able to cancel all magic.

That is until Gray has another brilliant idea, to freeze the magic around them.

Since the air has been turned into magic, Gray switches up by turning the air into frost, freezing both his and Viernes’ lungs.

This makes sense since Gray has always been trained to resist ice but Viernes only cancels magic, which means this will be an endurance test between Metal and Ice.

Black Ice and Gray’s Fathomless Potential in Magic

Fairy Tail Chapter 182 is titled, “Black Ice”

Released on April 16, 2025, this chapter has 19 pages.

The cover features the Moon Dragon God Selene in a different traditional kimono on a hot spring, with the moon in the sky to remind us of her identity and power.

Even Selene is amazed by Gray’s ability to freeze the air.

However, Viernes reminds everyone he has the power of Alchemy, meaning he can turn the ice freezing the air into other things.

To Viernes’ surprise, he was unable to change the frozen air as it turns out, this was not ice.

Gray had seemingly combined Devil Slayer Magic with the blizzard but as it turns out, this is a level even beyond that.

Gray has “made” Devil Slayer Magic.

He did not channel the mana of Devil Slayer Magic and combine it with Ice Magic or Ice-Make Magic.

Gray has surpassed Alchemy and Magic altogether by returning to his roots as a Maker Mage, meaning a Mage that creates substances.

Rather than convert or combine to add strength, Gray’s base is not the ice itself but the Devil Slayer Magic being “made” and reshaped to be the origin of Gray’s Ice.

The new ice is not natural and is something even Viernes, a master Alchemist, is unable to transmute.

Magic is Fairy Tail’s main power system, where the power of emotions fuels a variety of effects: Caster Magic (the ability to cast or conjure objects and phenomenon) and Holder Magic (the ability to use magic through tools), and with one subtype of Caster Magic, Molding Magic, it is the ability to create objects of any shape from a base element, such as Ice.

This also makes Gray arguably one of the smartest Mages in the series in terms of sheer development.

By tapping into the fundamentals of Molding Magic, Gray changed the base from which he could perform the act of Molding (from Ice Magic or Element to Devil Slayer Magic) in order to produce the element as the shape of the spell or the outcome: (from any objects to the Ice Elements).

Rather than Ice being the source of Molding or Devil Slayer Magic, it is the product or the shape made form Devil Slayer Magic, resulting in Glittering Ice.

It did not help that Gray was swapped with Natsu via Sai’s Rival Bond in Chapter 140: “Rival Bond Alchemy”, allowing Gray to create or learn a new type of Molding Magic: Fire-Make because of Natsu’s elemental affinity.

Anyway, Grey freezes Viernes and Wendy activates the Dragon Slayer Seal on Gray, allowing him to damage Viernes with his punches.

Viernes lies on his back, exposing the Lacrima on his chest, which Selene destroys with her Moon Dragon Slayer Magic.

After the Dragon God is defeated, Wendy asks Selene is everyone was okay.

With Aqua Aera, Selene opens a portal..

Meanwhile, while wondering if he should have gone after Ignia, Natsu flies with Happy and finds Erza and someone who resembles Ignia, Wed.

Selene leads Grey, Wendy and Carla to Lucy and Mercphobia, who Selene asks to help them in the fight since fighting requires will, not power.

Mercphobia says that he just passed on his will to fight for humanity, referring to the Key of the Water Dragon God that he left Lucy with in Chapter 178: “The Key to a New Power”.
