Was This Spinoff Worth Reading? Fairy Tail – Re:Fantasia Chapters 7 and 8 Review!

Was the Fairy Tail 20th anniversary sequel a worthwhile read or a waste of time? Has this improved Laxus’ storyline and paid tribute to Mashima’s 28 years of work?

FAIRY TAIL © 2006 by Hiro Mashima/Kodansha

In the previous Fairy Tail – Re:Fantasia chapter, Natsu faces off against Eraser at last.

Natsu vs Eraser

Fairy Tail – Re:Fantasia Chapter 7 is titled, “Lost Fairy”

Released on September 16th, this chapter has 20 pages.

The chapter cover features Erza, Jellal and the Tower of Heaven, the center of the Tower of Heaven Arc.

After Team Eraser is defeated, Juvia sneaks up behind Gray, having overheard everything, much to Gray’s surprise.

Juvia came because she was worried about him.

Erza thinks of using Clean to fuel the magic four-wheeler.

Wendy notes there is evil in Erza’s words but no malice.

Natsu gets mad at Vector for his team getting in the way of the Harvest Festival but Lucy tells him that Vector is already passed out.

There are 8 minutes until 3:00 PM.

Laxus breaks out of his Lacrima, his Magic seemingly returning.

From the hole, he finds Mirajane, who tells him to come and join the festival.

Laxus says he is not interested, with Mirajane once again bringing up his guilt over busting up the Guild, to which Mirajane counters by asking what would happen to Natsu and Gildarts, who wreck the guild all the time.

Mirajane explains the spirit of the Harvest Festival, that it is to honor the town.

Fairy Tail is allowed to be reckless and do as they please because of the support of Magnolia and the trust they have, so in turn Fairy Tail must repay them with gratitude.

Mirajane brings up the matching costume he has with Makarov, with Laxus saying he would be caught dead in that.

With 3:00 PM arriving, Laxus decides to go back to the Guild but then the Dust minions appears, holding the elements Tumble, Fire, Thing, Light, Hard, Lightning, with Juvia wondering if they could have the element of Love.

However, there is no end to the Dust.

Suddenly, the White Lacrima glows, with Happy and Lucy vanishing because of Eraser’s Magic.

This results in them being reborn into Dust, with elements Key and Cat but Natsu gives a very basic punch and they easily turn back to normal.

Suddenly, Eraser erases the space between them to get close, a result of his Magic.

Ivan’s Redemption??

Fairy Tail – Re:Fantasia Chapter 8 is titled, “The Harvest Festival”

Released on September 23rd, this chapter has 20 pages.

The cover features Laxus and the Thunder Tribe, with Makarov on the background, representing the Battle of the Fairy Tail Arc.

Eraser shows off more of his Eraser Magic, bringing two objects closer, like spikes from the cavern, then Eraser kicks Natsu, who notes that he is not so bad for an ex-Council member.

Eraser takes offense, saying that the Council is steeped in corruption, so he left and went to make a Lacrima development guild instead.

Natsu fires back, saying Eraser is also plenty rotten for erasing everything, with Eraser clarifying that he only erases what is unnecessary and the White Lacrima is the tool for that.

As Eraser takes off his white cloak and reveal his more familiar Ether Gear Overdrive look, he reveals that within the Lacrima is the spell Fairy Law or perhaps Raven Law given Ivan’s affiliation.

Eraser notes that although Ivan is underhanded, he is a talented Lacrima researcher who stole Makarov’s spell to create a Lacrima version.

Natsu took 14 years of readers’ times to realize Makarov’s son is Laxus’ father, the guy who led Raven Tail.

Eraser explains that Ivan wanted to use Laxus to acquire Fairy Tail but that is none of his business.

Lucy calls out Eraser for underestimating Laxus, which leads to Laxus fighting Dust, with Mirajane reminding him that they used to be human, so Mirajane chooses to be naughty and use her Take-Over: Satan Soul.

Back to Eraser, who says that he wants to eliminate evil, so he will test Fairy Law on Natsu but as it happens, the White Lacrima breaks apart.

Natsu calls out Eraser for trusting someone the latter knew was underhanded.

As it turns out, Ivan’s real plan was to get rid of his competition, pretending he wanted Laxus and he kept Laxus in a Lacrima for his safety when that plan was fulfilled but he could care less if Laxus’ friends from Fairy Tail died along the way.

He does express how it is too late for him to act like a father now.

Here, Ivan seems regretful over how he tried to kill his son by attempting to steal his Lacrima to sell it off or basically just abandoning him, which led to Laxus following the same character arc as his father, except make genuine connections like the Thunder Tribe or having his senses knocked into him by Natsu.

The lack of strong friends or the lesson of Gildarts to accept fear and not let it control you.

However, the entire underground area begins to collapse, with Gray and Juvia reuniting with Erza and Wendy.

Once again, Gray is nude, with Juvia commenting this is because that is who Gray-sama is.

Erza, who by the way is a weirdo in her own right, says that Gray’s nudity habit is not okay these days, with Carla chiming in and saying that it is never okay at all.

Laxus comes in, telling Natsu to get out of the way as he wants to sock Eraser but Natsu wants first crack at him.

So they decide to cooperate and punc him together, with Natsu using Fire Dragon Iron Fist and Lightning Dragon Jaw, knocking him out.

What a meh fight.

Eraser in Edens:Zero was pretty cool even if he did not make too many appearances.

He was aura-farming there but in this Fairy Tail spinoff, he is only a tribute of Mashima’s 28 years of writing, not really anything monumental other than flourish for the actual meat of the story: Laxus’s story arc, his bond with Mirajane and his father Ivan.

Mirajane concludes the chapter, saying this is indeed what the Harvest Festival is all about.
