Oda Makes Another Promise About the End of One Piece
Eiichiro Oda makes another signature prediction for the end of One Piece. Fans remain cautious as ever as Oda continues taking in more breaks and commitments that would further delay this deadline.
During One Piece Day on August 23, 2026, alongside the teaser for the upcoming God Valley and BAAD movies, Oda confirmed that the end of One Piece will come in 4 years or in 2030.
This is something many fans have guessed as One Piece: BAAD is set for 2029, 3 years from now, indicating that the manga is far from over.
Judging from Oda’s Jump Festa 2026 message, Elbaph is set to end by 2027 but there are a few more milestones left, such as the reunion with Shanks, the Final Poneglyph, Lodestar Island, Laugh Tale, Blackbeard’s big move and the Final War.
Oda is infamous for making such promises within 5-year ranges.
In Volume 42, Oda had originally intended for One Piece to last five years from its start in 1997 to 2002 but then he added or revised the goalposts by adding the Four Emperors, likely as early as June 17, 2002 with the introduction of the Strongest Man in the World, Whitebeard.
During the Youtube interview in Fischer’s channel when they visited Oda’s home in 2019, Oda brought up how he wanted to end One Piece within the next five years, meaning 2024 but throughout the 2020s, One Piece saw more breaks, with the same announcement from Oda in One Piece Day 2026 revealing that a key reason for his constant breaks is due to his involvement in multiple projects, from the One Piece live-action adaptation in South Africa to the upcoming anime films.
Oda’s editor Naito previously addressed the timeline during an interview with Oricon, explaining his belief that Oda could complete the story if he committed to that schedule.
“Honestly, when I heard Mr. Oda’s plans for the future, I couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Will this be finished in five years?’ But if Mr. Oda said it would be five years, I think he would finish it in exactly five years,”
However, given how big One Piece has grown, Oda has become more flexible with his deadlines: from expanding on the world via the Four Emperors by Enies Lobby in 2006 and the general scope of the journey via the New World Saga beginning in October 4, 2010 to its growth into live-action with One Piece live-action, which began production on January 31, 2022, with its release on August 31, 2024.
If the live-action will at least finish the first half of the series, it is expected that, given Oda’s direct involvement, there will be more delays but we are already much closer to the finale as the Final Saga began with Egghead Arc on August 29, 2022 while Elbaph began on September 16, 2024 with Chapter 1126: “Settling the Score” and we are 2 years into the arc as we are in the climactic battle between Imu and Luffy.
If 2027 will see the end of Elbaph and the beginning of the final journey, while Oda is in the mood to slow down due to his age and commitments with projects, there are still more stories to expand on in this massive world.
