A Laxus Spinoff? Fairy Tail: ReFantasia Chapter 1 Spoilers!
In this Fairy Tail 20th anniversary spinoff, we see Laxus relive through his biggest life mistake: the Battle of Fairy Tail, positioning him as the emotional core amidst a mysterious plot to cause “undesirables” to vanish.
For the 20th anniversary of Fairy Tail on July 29, 2026, Hiro Mashima set out to release a spin-off set in the summer time.
Fairy Tail: ReFantasia Chapter 1 is titled, “Words Aren’t Enough”
This chapter has 31 pages.
This is the first of nine weekly pages for a special volume.
The chapter begins like usual with Natsu and Happy barging on Lucy’s privacy while she is bathing and naked to have her join them for a job for the Magnolia Harvest.
The Miss Fairy Tail Contest is back!
This leads Natsu to offer himself as Lucy’s nominator and Happy as the manager.
In the Fairy Tail Guild Hall, Juvia asks Gray to be her manager, nominator and boyfriend.
However, Gray says that for this year, he is Erza’s nominator because he just wants to win.
And Loke (Leo) is the manager.
Erza declares that in any contest, she is not the losing type.
Juvia is desperate but not too much since she refuses to let Macao and Wakaba be her nominator and manager since they reek of cigarettes and booze.
Erza tells Gray and Loke that they should go do some special training, which is weird since there really should not be any fighting involved.
Wendy is insecure about joining the pageant since she is lacking in the chest department.
Mest comes in to assure her that having a big chest is not where a woman’s charm lies.
Rightfully, Carla takes Wendy away from the creepy Mest.
Gajeel wants to beat “Salamander’s (Natsu) girl” (Lucy), so Gajeel and Pantherlily offer to be Levy’s manager and nominator.
Bisca passes on joining the Miss Fairy Tail pageant even with the encouragement of her family, her husband Alzack and daughter Asuka.
Jet and Droy, former Shadow Gear members with Levy, are bummed to see that Levy is taken by her lover Gajeel, which leaves them with Cana since no guys are around the beautiful drunk.
Max and Warren offer to support Laki as a reminder minor characters matter.
Yes, Laki is going to win.
Kinana chooses not to enter despite Vijeeter and Reedus being willing to support her.
Of course, the Strauss siblings stick together for Mirajane.
Romeo asks why Lisanna does not intend to join, with her saying she is not cut out for it but Elfman refuses to believe that and asks for Makarov’s assessment.
Makarov seems to be dozing as he recalls the last time all of this went down.

This all happened during the Battle of Fairy Tail, where Laxus turned this event into a spite fest against his grandfather Makarov, until his defeat by Natsu.
This event clearly brings some negative memories even after Laxus redeemed himself.
Laxus also expresses how he hates this time of year due to the shame he felt over his actions, over almost destroying the guild.
Behind him are the Thunder Tribe, with Evergreen offering to join the pageant like last time and her, Bickslow and Freed telling him to enjoy the festival too but Laxus passes on that.
Bickslow tells him to forget the past but Evergreen would not let go of Erza beating her.
Suddenly, Natsu comes up and throws a fiery fist, declaring his intent to fight Laxus but with a swift lightning-imbued handchop, Laxus refuses but rather than stay grounded, Natsu gets up, saying that while the ladies have their contest, the guys can have a fighting contest.
Laxus’ face now resembles Elfman’s as he says this is what he was really afraid of.
The Thunder Tribe remind Natsu not to be insensitive while Laxus walks off.
Natsu says he wins by default and tells Laxus to join the Fantasia Parade at the end of the festival as they will make the Fairy Tail hand sign together.
Some fans may remember the emotional ending to the Battle of Fairy Tail Arc, where Makarov makes the Fairy Tail sign, the shape of an L.
The moment he and the entire guild do so in Laxus’ honor, even through his exile, definitely gives off Alabasta Arc vibes because the Straw Hats raised their X-shaped marks on their wrists as a representation of their bond with Princess Vivi.
The chapter ends with a mysterious man with a more mature Zeref-like appearance making an old beggar in the streets disappear, calling him unsightly.
He now targets Fairy Tail.
Fairy Tail: ReFantasia Chapter 2 will be released on August 5, 2026.
