KISUKE URAHARA’S BANKAI ANIMATED!!! Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 42 Spoilers!

In the previous Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War episode, as Yhwach experiences a nightmare of his defeat, Kisuke and Yoruichi have a hard time against Askin Nakk Le Vaar

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 42 is titled, “Son of Darkness”

Episode 42 adapts Chapter 664: “The Gift”, Chapter 665: “The Princess Dissection”, Chapter 666: ” Dull, Doll, Null” (pages 1-13),  Chapter 672: “Son of Darkness” (13-17). where the title is from, Chapter 673: “Father” (pages 5-17) and Chapter 674: “Father 2” (pages 1-6), for a total of 71 pages adapted and 6 chapters chosen.

With this pagecount, we see a mostly-manga faithful episode but we also get plenty of anime-original content.

Anime-Original: NEW Orihime Flashback

The episode begins with a flashback that is anime original but could potentially hint towards the upcoming Hell Arc due to the presence of a butterfly flying behind Orihime in a greenhouse.

Then again, this is a greenhouse and butterflies represent transformation, with Orihime remembering this moment as she realizes that she can finally fight with Ichigo.

This is a clear improvement over the penultimate pages of Chapter 672: “Son of Darkness”, where we do get the necessary flashbacks but we also add something extra, a sense of ownership for Orihime rather than the plot giving her a hand.

A Unique Theme: Vollstandig: Hass Hein

Ominous feminine chants, almost akin to Hell Verse’s Incantation, surround the release of arguably the best-looking Vollstandig in all of Bleach, a design that represents Askin as the newest Schutstaffel, appointed only during the most important attack of the group against the Soul King’s Palace, mainly because his aesthetic posits him as a representation of modern warfare, which aligns with Urahara’s despondent outlook of preparing for the worst with a thousand strategies due to the escalating nature of war.

Even Askin’s psychological restraint over the Death Dealing reflects this conscious awareness of the dangers of chemical and nuclear warfare that his Schrift represent.

Manga IMPROVEMENT: Pierrot UNDERSTOOD Kubo’s Intent

Kisuke Urahara’s Bankai, Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame (Modification of the Crimson Princess’ Dissection at the Doors of Avalokiteśvara) has the ability to reconstruct any living person or object through its stitches.

We see it emerge out of a shadowy dimension that is veiled by a transparent curtain upon activation and the first-person perspective in the anime was a nice touch.

This is easily the best-animated fight of the trilogy of opening episodes for the final cour and it is primarily due to chief director Tomohisa Taguchi’s astute observation regarding the manga, according to the interview at the end of the compilation film.

In Chapter 665: “The Princess Dissection”, we briefly see Urahara stand on some stitches in the air but we never see him do it again for the rest of the fight.

Instead, he is just walking like normal as he feels heavy due to both Wahrwelt being under Quincy control and thus no Reishi footholds and due to the Gift Ball Deluxe’s poison all around the barrier.

The anime is a clear improvement over the manga because we see the actual flow that Kubo wanted to convey yet could not fully show with more panels.

After Urahara punches Askin and sends him far away, we see an opportunity for an extended scene of Urahara sliding through the stitches produced in the air by his Bankai, all originating from the tip of his Zanpakuto.

We also see more augmentations, not just of his fist but also his feet to boost his speed.

Because of this extension, we see Askin use new abilities, such as how his Reishi Staff can produce up to five Gift Balls to fire at a target.

These Gift Balls were four times bigger than Urahara himself, so his Bankai, which augments his body’s resistance, strength and speed, were needed to dodge these five attacks

Shintarou Matsui did a good job for his first ever-stint as storyboarder and episode director, as it is clear he captured what Kubo and Taguchi’s script conveyed.

NEW DETAIL: Askin’s Blut Vene Upon Death

The anime adds an important detail that explains everything about Askin’s prolonged survival.

Upon contact with Grimmjow taking out his heart, his Blut Vene activates by instinct, in response to the harm inflicted to the source of Blut Vene.

This has precedent.

In Chapter 684: “The Blade”, when Uryu pierced Yhwach with the Still Silver Arrow, his body emitted Blut Vene all over the center spot and behind.

If anything, this is a necessary correction to something Kubo already had in mind when he originally wrote the manga.

In Askin’s case, it is a reasonable cause for why he survived having his heart crushed.

Blut Vene attempted to block the damage but it was unable to do so and it is constantly emitting its blue hue as the blood and Reishi flow is no longer in control.

And with Blut Vene activated, blood flow stops and the pain and damage to the body is mitigated, which would allow the user to breathe and survive a bit longer, with Askin still having 5 minutes to explain himself as he reveals that upon death, the mental lock he placed upon Deathdealing will be removed as it was the only way not to get himself killed with his own Schrift.

NEW FORM: Jugram Haschwalth’s Almighty Form

As the theme for Lille Barro’s Trompete scene from Episode 37: “Shadows Gone”  plays (titled “Rise to the Call”), we witness Jugram Haschwalth take on a new form.

First, black ooze bursts out like tears that stain his face.

Later, we see that his arms and fur collar are wrapped in the same Black Spiritual Pressure, with two eyes on the collar.

The design reminds us of Ulquiorra’s Segunda Etapa, which is a unique transformation among his Arrancar kind, has his eyes seemingly tear up with black, his arms being black, and creates unique Spiritual Pressure, with Ulquiorra’s feeling like pure despair and taking a liquid form in both his Resurreccion and Segunda Etapa.

The chapter ends with the iconic Yhwach standing page and the title drop while Ichigo is overwhelmed by Yhwach’s Black power.

Due to all the fights happening simultaneously, it appears that Yhwach is still keeping Jugram’s Schrift, the Balance and the full power of the Soul King while Haschwalth has the full power of Yhwach’s Schrift, the Almighty.

This gets explained in the next episode.

Even the scattering of these petals

is a miracle

We have another anime-original poem from Toshiro, who first had his poem in Cour 1, Episode 3: “March of the StarCross”, which happens to be the first anime-original poem

“A frostbitten world turns to fire,

A shadow of a wing remains.

I try and try again,

It slips away, shadow of a wing.”

In this case, we get a simpler poem due to how the episode is setting up that Toshiro’s ice petals will scatter.

What was originally a time limit for his Bankai: Daiguren Hyorinmaru, will unlock his adult form and full potential.

In this way, the “scattering of these petals”, which are treated as a limitation, become a miracle.

This fits the theme of Miracle regarding his opponent, Gerard Valkyrie, which is the fulfillment of the hopes of the people against impossible odds.

When Gerard is killed, he always comes back.

Just as when Toshiro is about to lose his Bankai, it gets stronger.

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 43 is titled, “Blood of my Bone” and will be released on August 8, 2026.
