Cross GETS SHOT! The Simurian War BEGINS! Is Yuji Already in Tokyo? Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 12 Spoilers!
With Tokyo as the nest for Cursed Spirits and war between Sorcerers and Rumelian Warriors breaking out, will Yuji intervene after years in hiding?
In the previous Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapter, while the Cultural Exchange has enabled the potential coexistence between the Rumelians and humans, an elder discovers the real role of Jujutsu sorcerers, killing Cursed Spirits, which turn out to be the equivalent of Kalyans from Simuria.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 12 is titled, “The Inhuman Makyo”
This chapter has 19 pages.
Editor’s note: “Just when the path to coexistence finally seemed within reach…”
The title is a callback to the final arc of the original series, the “Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown” (Chapters 222 to 271), with Makyo being the Japanese for “Demonic Realm” and is in reference to the entirety of Tokyo becoming no-man’s land due to the millions of Cursed Spirits released by Kenjaku following the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident.
The chapter begins with Usami being informed by Jabaloma about Elder Boro’s testimony, of the Jujutsu Sorcerers killing the Kalyan, the sacred guardian beasts of the Rumelian tribe.
Usami insists there are no Kalyans on Earth but Jabaloma remarks that the Rumelians can verify when the Third Eye, which normally cries only on a Simurian’s birth and death, tears up at the sight of a Kalyan dying.
Meanwhile outside the Kyoto Jujutsu High building at some stairs, Yuka and Tsurugi explain to Maru that normally, Cursed Spirits manifest only in Tokyo but that was a lie made by the Japanese government when they were formed to acknowledge the existence of Cursed Spirits following the events of the Culling Game.
Yuka opens a shrine containing talismans to maintain the Barrier in Kyoto.
Tsurugi also brings up the “Great Purification”, an event where Jujutsu Sorcerers enter Tokyo to slaughter a ton of Cursed Spirits to prevent them from spilling out of Tokyo and it is uncommon for students like the Okkotsu siblings to join in.
Maru wonders how strong Cursed Spirits are and Yuka says they vary in form and power but the former capital, Tokyo, is so overflowing with Cursed Spirits that the city has been given the name the “Inhuman Makyo of Tokyo”.
We see two of the Sorcerers from Jujutsu Headquarters, the senior Yakumaru and a swordman, competing for points based on the size (the former got 10 points but the latter argues it should just be 5 points since it is the same size as the one he got).
It is funny how even though the Culling Game is done, there is still a point system for killing opponents, or in this case, Cursed Spirits.
The swordsman is of a junior rank and follows his senior to an abandoned building.
Yakumaru also mentions that indoor exterminations require two or more people as a rule.
This is likely learning from Cursed Womb incidents like the one Gojo’s students went through with the Finger Bearer and its Innate Domain.
They spot many bat Cursed Spirits and some shadowy hands leading to a door.
There, they find Oski tending to a Cursed Spirit, which somehow licks him.
What Exactly Are Kalyans?
Ordering the Great Purification to be halted, Usami now forms a proper definition and differentiation between Kalyans and Cursed Spirits.
Kalyans from Simuria are beings indistinguishable from Cursed Spirits on Earth.
The big difference, however, is that Kalyan have physical bodies while Cursed Spirits do not.
If you recall, Cursed Spirits fade away and it was a big deal in particular for the creation of Sukuna’s bath as Uraume mentions how difficult it is to preserve the core of a Cursed Spirit for that purpose.
Usami and Mino head for Tokyo, with Jabaloma and Cross offering to join them and Cross suggesting they go to the mothership Naunax as a faster means of travel.
Meanwhile, Yuka continues teaching Maru about Barriers, with the use of Cursed Objects as Warding anchors, likely because they contain Cursed Energy to fuel the Barrier.
Yuka remarks that as time passes, the nature of a Cursed Object also changes and that also changes the charm into one that attracts Cursed Spirits rather than repels them.
Maru concludes judging this shift in Cursed Object nature is also part of a Sorcerer’s job, with the Okkotsu siblings surprised that Maru seems to be having fun.
Maru explains that Rumelian warriors, the role of protecting someone, is not some inherent status or assigned job but part of the tribe’s daily life.
Maru states that Rumelian warriors are assigned at birth by the village’s Kalyan but not all Kalyan can do it.
The Kalyan can assign and empower warriors (Sorcerers) when they are greatly revered by the community, such as Maru’s village having revered their Kalyan for 2,000 years, a long time since it is immortal.
Maru also says that the Kalyan chooses the middle names of the villagers.
Both Tsurugi and Yuka still do not even remember Maru’s full name.
We return to some tense action as Yakumaru calls for backup and is confronted by Oski and his fellow Rumelians, with the Sorcerer arguing that the Simurians struck first and so threatens them with a gun.
Suddenly, they hear Usami’s Cursed Speech, telling them to “Wait”.
Usami comes in to say that the Great Purification is cancelled since the Rumelians were not properly briefed about Cursed Spirits, clearing up the misunderstanding.
Usami realized that withholding any information about Jujutsu Sorcery on purpose came to bite them from behind and escalate the situation, which means that the Sorcerers must acknowledge responsibility and apologize.
Yakumaru is confused by this sudden change so Usami reveals that Kalyans and Cursed Spirits are ALMOST the same kind of being.
Cross says this clarification to Oski but Oski insists that what they saw was a Kalyan because of the tears from his Third Eye.
Cross says that if the creature was a Kalyan, the strain from the Third Eye would be much worse and they need to see the corpse of the Cursed Spirit vanish, rather than remain like a Kalyan’s would.
Cross tells the Rumelians that Cursed Spirits are a product of the Japanese minds’ “rolloluca” (Cursed Energy) but Oski insists that these Cursed Spirits have voices.
Once again, this brings back the discourse of Cursed Spirit dignity introduced by the Disaster Curses (Jogo, Dagon and Hanami), curses that manifested as a result of humanity’s fear towards nature rather than their personal negative emotions.
Furthermore, it is also a reminder that humans can become Vengeful Spirits if cursed or, in the case of Sorcerers, not killed with Jujutsu, meaning they are beings made of Cursed Energy after death but retain the persona of the deceased.
Cross begs for Oski to please be patient, showing how much Cross has changed because of his talk with Yuka in Chapter 7: “The Robbed”.
Cross’s Injury
Jabaloma and Usami offer mutual apologies on behalf of their respective groups, with Jabaloma mentioning that the Rumelians have trespassed into the Inhuman Makyo while Usami says that their excessive caution and distrust towards Simurians and acting without transparency caused this escalation.
Parallel to this were the two men who caused the scuffle monologuing about why their respective sides have to apologize.
Jabaloma decides they will depart and Usami will contact them again another time.
Meanwhile, Yuka finishes up the inspection of the Barrier, with Maru tired from climbing up the stairs.
Tsurugi explains that it cannot be helped since these spots (highest points, underground and sacred locations where prayers and crowds gather) are the backbone of the Barrier and they are on Kyoto, the shrine city and origin of Jujutsu.
The Okkotsu siblings consider getting the help of the Rumelians since the Sorcerers are always short-staffed, which makes Maru excited about this path of coexisting by working together.
By this point, the three friends part ways, looking forward to progressing coexistence.
But this hopeful encounter comes at the same time as the worst possible outcome.
Out of utter paranoia and frustration, Yakumaru fires his gun at Cross, saying that Cross was about to reach for a weapon even though the previous scene had Cross try to deescalate the situation.
Yakumaru is worse than Ivar from Vinland Saga because the former actually wants a war!
The Rumelians are angered by this outrageous move.
The swordsman Sorcerer prepares to retaliate while Usami prepares to use Cursed Speech to stop things from escalating.
Suddenly, everyone is silenced by the arrival of Dabura, who asks what is going on.
Will Dabura end hostilities before they get worse or will his presence signify the beginning of Simuria’s attack?
