On December 28, 2025, a trailer has announced that Kyoto Animation will be adapting Ruri Dragon.

This marks the first time KyoAni has adapted any material from Shonen Jump

The choice of manga to adapt is both surprising and unsuprising.

One of KyoAni’s biggest hits is Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, a manga from Futabasha’s Monthly Action magazine from 2013 to 2020 that was adapted into a two-season anime from January 12, 2017 to September 23, 2021 with an anime film released last June 27, 2025.

This would make Ruri Dragon the second dragon girl series to be adapted.

Ruri Dragon is written and illustrated by Masaoki Shindo on June 13, 2022, initially for Weekly Shonen Jump but after two months, on August 1, 2022, the manga took an indefinite hiatus due to the author’s health, returning on April 22, 2024, which is what led the series being transferred from Weekly Shonen Jump to the Shonen Jump Plus digital platform.

Beyond the main hiatus, Ruri Dragon has had a history of repeated long breaks, including a 2-month hiatus from May 19 to July 28, 2025.

As of writing, the series has been on a month-long break since December 14, 2025 and will return on January 5, 2026.

Ruri Dragon only has 42 chapters under its belt, which is the sufficient number for adapting a 12-episode season.

As a result, the series only has 4 volumes.

As of October 26, 2025, Ruri Dragon has sold 1.1 million copies.
