Oshi No Ko And The First Slam Dunk Film Awarded Anime Of The Year At TAAF 2024

Oshi No Ko won “Best TV Series,” whereas The First Slam Dunk walked away with the title of “Best Film.”

The results of the prestigious Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2024 are here, and it looks like the hype for Oshi No Ko anime and The First Slam Dunk movie hasn’t died out just yet!

The highest category, which is anime of the year, was shared between the two, as Oshi No Ko won “Best TV Series,” whereas The First Slam Dunk walked away with the title of “Best Film.”

The titles that the evaluators selected were those that made their complete or partial debuts from Oct 1, 2022 to Sept 30, 2023.

  • Best TV Series: Oshi no Ko

Individual Awards

  • Writer: Takehiko Inoue (THE FIRST SLAM DUNK)

Additionally, 75,589 ballots were cast in favor of the anime fan award, of which IDOLiSH7 Movie: LIVE 4bit – BEYOND THE PERIOD received 30,902 votes, making it the recipient of the anime fan award for this year.

TAAF replaced Tokyo Anime Award, which was held as part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair from 2002 to 2013. With its 11th edition in 2024, TAAF is an independent international animation festival founded in 2014.

The festival has three main sections: Competition (open to works previously unreleased in Japan for commercial purposes), Anime of the Year, and Achievement Award. Screenings, symposiums, and children’s activities are also part of the festival.

Under the slogan “TOKYO is the HUB of contemporary ANIMATION”, TAAF nurtures new talent, promotes the animation culture and industry, and boosts Tokyo tourism by sharing the city’s charms. The festival screens outstanding and highly original animation works from around the world, interacting with animation fans worldwide and inspiring creators and audiences.

About Oshi No Ko:

Oshi no Ko is a Japanese manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump since April 2020, with its chapters collected in thirteen tankōbon volumes as of November 2023.

Between April and June 2023, Doga Kobo produced the first season, consisting of eleven episodes. In 2024, a second season is scheduled to premiere.

Mangaplus describes the overall plot of Oshi No Ko as follows:

“In the world of showbiz, lies are weapons.” Goro works as an OB-GYN in the countryside, a life far removed from the entertainment industry. Meanwhile, his favorite idol, Ai Hoshino, has begun her climb to stardom. The two meet in the “worst possible way,” setting the gears of fate in motion! The amazing Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari team up to depict the world of showbiz from a completely new perspective in this shocking series!
