One Piece Animator Gets Harassed On Twitter Over Bonney’s Portrayal In The Anime

Other fans who support the animator wasted no time opposing these harassers by saying the dude is just doing his job, animating what Oda has already drawn.

I can’t say I wasn’t expecting the whole Bonney controversy to blow up once again when the anime began adapting the Egghead Island arc. But to blame the animator, who is merely portraying what the source material did, is not really fair.

On Jan 14, 2024, a freelance animator under the name @kda_artist on Twitter announced that he was one amongst the animators who worked on Bonney’s scenes in One Piece episode 1090. Rather than receiving praise from fans (which he did), for the most part, he was instead criticized for sexualizing Bonney, sometimes even more than what Oda intended in the original manga.

Some of these criticisms turned into legit online harassment, telling the animator to “go to hell”, or straight-up giving death threats against the guy.

Other fans who support the animator wasted no time opposing these harassers by saying the dude is just doing his job, animating what Oda has already drawn.

In Nov 2024, Oda revealed the real age of Bonney to be 12 years old while narrating her backstory in Chapter 1098. And fans took to social media to show their frustration and disgust over the matter, slandering the author.

However, KDA, the animator, admitted he had no idea of Bonney’s age, presumably stating he is not up to date with the manga.

Or perhaps he knew and is just trolling the fandom because some of his comments seem to suggest he’s just having fun watching them have a meltdown. For instance, KDA posted a reaction clip of a happy Doflamingo after the comments and replies and in another, he’s trolling the fandom by apologizing for sexualizing Jinbei LMAO.

About One Piece:

One Piece manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 1997, with its individual chapters compiled into 107 tankōbon volumes as of November 2023.

The manga spawned a media franchise, having been adapted into a festival film by Production I.G, and an anime series by Toei Animation, which began broadcasting in 1999. Additionally, Toei has developed fourteen animated feature films, one original video animation, and thirteen television specials.

The latest entry in the franchise, One Piece Film Red, premiered in Japan in August 2022. It is the 8th highest-earning film of all time in Japan and also topped Japan’s box office for the year 2022 in terms of both yen earned and tickets sold.
