Crunchyroll Increases Their Subscription Charges For U.S., French And Argentinian Users

It is due to the increase in content over the past few years, to include over 45,000 episodes across 1,400 series and films.

Anime Explained

Streaming giant Crunchyroll has announced, on May 1, 2024, that they’ve increased the pricing for its Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan subscription tiers for users in the United States, Argentina, Colombia, France, Portugal, and other select countries, which are not exactly mentioned in the original post.

However, in the first category, fan-tier, the prices will remain the same.

Crunchyroll has provided information on each of these categories and what they entail for U.S. users as follows:

Crunchyroll Subscription Tiers and Benefits

Fan Tier ($7.99/month)

  • 5% off select products at the Crunchyroll Store.

  • Stream on up to six devices at a time.
  • Offline viewing!

  • Ability to order convention exclusives online.

The streaming company has basically increased the prices of 2 of these categories because they offer more goodies! (Irrespective of whether you need them or not).

For instance, in the United States, the subscription price for Mega Fan Tier increased from $9.99/month to $11.99/month, while the Ultimate Fan Tier will increase to $15.99/month (from $14.99/month). However. The Fan tier will remain unchanged at $7.99/month.

Moreover, the free-trial period has been reduced from 14 days to 7 days.

Though a lot of fans felt disappointed over the drastic increase in the monthly subscription charges, the uprise, according to company executives, is due to the increase in content on Crunchyroll over the past few years, which has led to an expansion of its repertoire to include over 45,000 episodes across 1,400 series and films.

However, this wasn’t the first time Crunchyroll has increased its prices. Its first major price increase took place in 2019 in the United States, Great Britain, Australia and the Nordics, and implemented these multi-tier subscription offerings in 2020. Countries like Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand also saw an uptick in prices in October 2022 but they also lowered its monthly subscription prices in almost 100 countries in July 2022.
