Black Lagoon Reaches 10 Million Sales Milestone After 24 Years
Black Lagoon’s success may seem slow but even after 24 years, 13 volumes and constant delays, there is still a loving fanbase and growing interest in this classic.
On August 14, 2026, it was announced that with the release of Volume 13 of Black Lagoon and Volume 9 of the spinoff “Black Lagoon: Eda – Initial Stage” (2022), the series overall, including spinoff manga and novels, has sold over 10 million copies after 24 years of publication.
Previously, by December 19, 2023, the Black Lagoon manga had over 9.5 million copies in circulation.
This means within 3 years, the timeframe of a new volume from the main manga, the series has only sold over 500,000 copies, a slow rate that is attributed to the delays in writing due to the author’s health.
Written on April 19, 2022 for the same magazine as the original series, “Black Lagoon: Eda – Initial Stage” (2022) by Hajime Yamamura focuses on Eda, a fake nun of the Rip-Off Church, on her early days in the CIA.

Black Lagoon is written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe for Shogakukan’s Monthly Sunday Gene-X since April 19, 2002.
The series is set in the early to mid-1990s and follows the Lagoon Company, a four-member team of pirate mercenaries, focusing on Rock and Revy, smuggling goods in and around the seas of Southeast Asia with their PT boat, the Black Lagoon.
