Yoru Brings THE MOON DOWN?? Chainsaw Man Chapter 223 Review!
While this chapter is pure ragebait towards Yoru, we are about to witness the upper limits of Devil power as Yoru brings down the moon.
In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, Denji reveals his new, reality-changing form, Denji Man!
Chainsaw Man Chapter 223 is titled, “Ultimate Armor”
This chapter has 15 pages.
The chapter begins with Yoru not enjoying the sight of Denji Man, calling him “the red one”, which could be in reference to Denji’s hybrid form having the red chainsaw head.
Now he has covered up Pochita’s black body, meaning that this body is Denji’s Chainsaw Man form in its fullest.
Rather than being a partial Devil as a Hybrid, this is a human becoming a complete Devil yet sharing space with that Devil.
While the previous dynamic was that trauma or consent would have Denji let Pochita take over his mind, it is now the opposite as Pochita no longer has to fight for Denji.
This is a similar evolution to Ichigo and the true Zangetsu, his Hollow and Zanpakuto.
Ichigo feared his Hollow but when Ichigo was killed by Ulquiorra, Zangetsu took over to protect Orihime, meaning that even Ichigo’s other self wanted to fulfill Ichigo’s desires just as Pochita took over the traumatized Denji’s body to fulfill Denji’s checklist of dreams, including a date and he chose Kobeni.
However, when Ichigo understood his true identity as a Quincy and his true Zanpakuto identities, he was able to combine his Quincy and Hollow halves on his body while being the one in charge because in his words, “Zangetsu, you are me.”
The only difference here is that Denji and Pochita remain distinct, more like Asta and his Devil Liebe’s Union form but this gradual evolution theme Bleach has is a nice comparison.
Yoru says that she is not interested in Denji, which is a loaded line.
Makima never liked Denji as a person and only wanted Pochita but throughout the story, she coaxes Denji into being comfortable with her, even feigning interest for her plans.
Meanwhile, Yoru is more open about her feelings, always prioritizing her agenda and acquiring Pochita over Denji’s welfare and now she flat-out says that she does not want Denji but Pochita as her opponent.
Denji Man summons chains that attach to multiple buildings.
Yoru thinks this attack was pathetic coming from a high schooler and asks Denji to return his body to Chainsaw Man.
Suddenly, Denji grabs the head of the Moray Eel Devil that Pochita just sliced up in Chapter 220: “Bonds and Michigan”.
Moray is Yoru’s favorite, so this is pure ragebait
Denji brings the heads of all the Devils he has taken down in that chapter as “swanky armor”, hence the chapter title.
Remember this is the Deathless world, so all those heads are alive and they are crying out of pain.
Denji taunts Yoru into attacking but Yoru refuses and is angered by how Denji is using her friends as living meat shields.
This gives Denji an opening to slice up Yoru, who decides to fire on Denji’s head instead but Denji blocks the Gun Devil shot with Moray’s head.
Yoru states that up until now, she was playing by the rules and only wanted to have fun but now Denji ruined it, so she is now being serious.
Denji says that he does relate to what Yoru is feeling since he too lost friends and he points out that the more lonely Yoru is, the more her heart aches, which makes Yoru gasp as Denji psychoanalyzes her.
Now Denji chows down on Moray’s head.
I wonder if eating something is a permanent death or will the leftover particles regenerate to bring the Devil back because no way is that not a death if Denji just completely eats off every single piece, unless we count cell activity as life.
Some have pondered about Yoru’s liking for the Moray Eel Devil since Asa happens to like aquariums.
Is it possible that this preference and loneliness is mixed into Yoru’s mind, given she shares a brain with Asa?
Or does this simply expose feelings Yoru refuses to acknowledge, such as wanting friends so she does not want to be alone?
The two do have such synergy as they have similar experiences and longings.
In anger, Yoru fires a Gun Devil shot while Denji scurries around, hiding, causing Yoru to crash out even more, lift her hand and bring something out of the moon.
One reason why Yoru is able to weaponize the moon is due to it being claimed by the United States of America and Yoru can convert any part of America into a weapon thanks to her Contract with the President of the United States and that contract of using US citizens to take Yoru’s deaths enables her to have associations and links of guilt with the country as a whole and that includes the moon.
