NELLIEL’S RETURN! What To Expect in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Arc Episode 32

Nelliel returns in her adult form while Ichigo and the Gotei 13 infiltrate the new Soul King Palace.

We get yet another classic throwback with Nelliel, restored to her adult form, as she joins Grimmjow and Kisuke Urahara’s other unexpected allies in their effort to return to the Soul King Palace.

There are five preview images, showing Urahara with the orange ball that every Shinigami would hold to activate the Gate

This was a scene from Chapter 617: “Return of the God” and it happens here because the anime has moved the Gate creation scene upon Ukitake’s death.

There is also the preview of Haschwalth looking nonchalantly at Yhwach’s empowered form, meaning we will see Askin panic over the situation.

We also have additional previews, such as the shot of the entirety of Wahrwelt, Riruka and Yukio’s return, Nelliel being clingy towards Ichigo (and the subsequent jealous reaction of Orihime)

Staff List

Episode 32 is set to be an incredible piece of storyelling under Shinichiro Ueda, the director of Episode 7: “Born in the Dark” in Cour 1, which is considered one of the best and most high-quality episodes of the entire Bleach series alongside its predecessor, Episode 6: “The Fire”.

He has also done some episodes in Cour 2, such as Episode 17: “Heart of Wolf” and the amazing Episode 25: “The Master” that featured a much improved Squad 0 vs Schutzstaffel fight.

Kumiko Takayanagi is a regular presence in Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, having also helped with Akudama drive as animation director and with experience stretching back as far as the Cowboy Bebop movie.

We also have a good set of key animators as well, such as:

  • Masayuki Kouda: Naruto Shippuden (Naruto’s entrance in the Pain Invasion Arc and Sasuke vs Danzo) and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations series director after episode 104
  • Ayako Sato: Gintama
  • Koji Yabuno: Naruto (Rock Lee vs Gaara, Kisame and Itachi vs Asuma and Kurenai)
  • Retsu Ohkawara: Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Akudama Drive
  • Yoshiki Nozawa: Boruto: Naruto Next Generation (Urashiki vs Gaara)
  • Mamoru Hoshino: Pretty Cure All Stars F, Chainsaw Man, Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Super: Broly
  • Jiahao Zhang: Kaiju No. 8 ED
  • Xu li: Mushoku Tensei

The overall impression from this list of key animators is that the episode will look great and the episode director is known for making non-action episodes look great anyway.

What to Expect

The episode will likely be faithful to the manga will even fewer changes than in the last episode, which was already adapting a good chunk of chapters.

Leaks suggest that the episode will end with Chapter 629: “Gate of the Sun” as the Quincies arrive at the main castle of Wahrwelt.

Nelliel is Back!

Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck regains her adult form, the form she took as the former 3rd Espada and the one lost due to her Hollow Mask cracking and leaking out Reiatsu.

Thanks to an armband made by Kisuke Urahara, her Reiatsu has stabilized so she could maintain her adult form at will.

This does lead to a funny scene where Orihime gets jealous of how clingy Nelliel is but it also shows that Nelliel will now get involved in the Thousand Year Blood War.

We even see a glimpse of Nelliel acting as Grimmjow’s Espada rival.

Valley of Screams

The inclusion of Riruka and Yukio and alliance with the former Espada indicate Urahara’s genius backup plans working to ensure Ichigo and gang can continue the fight against Yhwach while the Gotei 13 are preparing to enter the Palace with all their Reiatsu.

This is also where we will have a canon explanation for the Valley of Screams, which is totally different to what was established in the first Bleach movie, “Memories of Nobody”, where the Valley of Screams is a prominent setting.

Last Scene: Warhwelt

We will have a glimpse of the construction of Warhwelt (“True World” in German), the fusion of the Soul King Palace and Wandenreich city of Silbern that takes the form of the five-pointed Quincy Cross floating in the sky.

We will see the Garganta and the Senkaimon open and reveal that the Soul King Palace has altered

The episode will end on Yhwach naming the new world “Wahrwelt” while the entire area is surrounded in a pink hue to signify the change in the environment’s Reiatsu and as part of chief director Tomohisa Taguchi’s approach to color theory.

Next Episode Poem: Renji Abarai

Next episode’s poem is by Renji Abarai:

“Fire, dripping from my fangs, does not disappear,

But keeps the battlefield burning,

Bringing the true face of a friend to light.”

For the first time since Cour 2’s last episode, we finally get a poem straight from the manga, taken from Volume 73 that features Renji Abarai on the cover.

 

Considering that Episode 33 is the infiltration into Wahrwelt, we might slow down again to introduce new anime content.

Opening 3 makes the implication that Renji will be more relevant in this cour than he was in this section of the manga.

What this could mean is that Uryu will be fighting Renji while the former is pursuing his plan to destroy Wahrwelt.

This makes sense because barely anyone has been interfering with Uryu and Haschwalth was kept away from checking on Uryu because Bazz-B arrived to do battle with his old friend.

Uryu would need a fight while keeping up his facade and Renji would be an interesting opponent because Uryu’s Vollstandig is similar to Byakuya’s Senbonzakura: Kageyoshi, the Bankai that defeated Renji in the Soul Society arc.

This could be an even more intense battle than with Ichigo from two episodes ago as Renji will hold nothing back against a traitor.

Considering their dynamic in the Hueco Mundo Arc, it might even be another bittersweet battle.

Alternatively, Renji might be fighting Gerard, which would lead him to being supported by the other Gotei 13 members.

This brings us to what the poem actually means.

In the context of Volume 73, this is about Renji’s promise to be a “light” to Ichigo no matter what ever since he brought Renji and Rukia back together.

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Arc Episode 33 is titled, “Gate of the Sun” and will be released on November 16, 2024.
