In the previous Kagurabachi chapter, Samura joins the Enchanted Blade Project.

Kagurabachi Chapter 135 is titled, “The Beginning of War”

This chapter has 15 pages.

Editor’s note: “The Enchanted Blade candidates Ibuki and Samura have assembled in Tokyo. And now, their answer?”

The chapter begins with Kunishige imploring Samura and Ibuki Misaka to wield the Enchanted Blades, the power to defend Japan.

Ibuki immediately refuses, causing him to bicker with Shiba and remind him that he is just a lone vigilante bound for hell, therefore scum that is unworthy of bearing such great power.

When Ibuki kills someone, he is giving it as a party favor for hell but also out of personal satisfaction, meaning he is not fighting for great ideals, although he thinks Samura fits the bill.

Claiming he is just a one-man army, Ibuki leaves.

While saying he is similar to Ibuki, Samura chooses to take the Enchanted Blade.

Later, we see the formation of the Counter-Sorcery Army, the predecessor of the Kamunabi and first official armed forces of Sorcerers in Japan, combining the forces of most Sorcerer Clans with the Japanese military.

Giyu Soga at the center takes charge.

They have already been made even before this year but now they are in full force.

Judging from the inclusion of the Army and Navy at this time, rather than calling them part of the Self-Defense Forces, it sounds like Kagurabachi’s Japan did not experience World War II and even if they did, Japan has Sorcerers but right now lack any colonies or colonial ambitions, implying that there could have been Sorcery outside Japan to serve as a deterrent or the private existence of Sorcerers in Japan before the Seitei War held back any government ambitions since the government was too busy burying this secret post-Mikaboshi exile a thousand years ago.

By this time, we see Soshiro Azami, Kunishige and Shiba’s fellow childhood friend, join the ranks.

If both men are around the same age by this point, Azami would be 19 years old as Kunishige was slightly older than the others.

Operation Foxport

The evacuation of southeast Chiba and the construction of a large barrier therein.

Giyu addresses the Counter-Sorcery Army, identifying the Mikaboshi as a thousand-year-old enemy that are unwilling to negotiate and therefore Japan shall respond in kind.

For over 20 chapters throughout this arc, we have seen Japan taking many opportunities to avoid war in spite having a direct role in pushing the Mikaboshi to this point.

Well they are in a somewhat equal position with the singular Datenseki in Japan’s position to be converted to usable Enchanted Blades.

The morality of this war will depend on the toll and unfortunately the final outcome is precisely why the truth was better left buried.

Now in the Enchanted Blades Project headquarters, we see Kunishige come across Akemura, who recalls how he once swore to cut down Kunishige, much to Chiaki’s chagrin, seeing him initially as an unworthy suitor who once endangered his sister, the events of Chapter 127: “Smelting, Part 2”.

Now, the tone differs, as Akemura makes a ninety-degree bow as hs profusely thanks Kunishige for saving Chiaki, much to Kunishige’s surprise.

Despising his powerlessness to protect his sister, Akemura wishes for an Enchanted Blade but Kunishige refuses in spite of Akemura’s impressive sword skills, as he had been informed by Samura of what he had done, as Samura witnessed from the flashback in Chapter 111: “Apex”, how utterly ruthless Akemura was in dispensing justice.

Kunishige asks if Chiaki knows about these outings and Akemura is silent, showing that he has been keeping these a secret to prevent his sister from intervening or being frightened.

This is something Kunishige intends to hold over his future brother-in-law, though Akemura says Kunishige can tell Chiaki since he is 17 and not a minor anymore.

Kunishige recalls Akemura is still 16 as it is not yet his birthday, which is unknown but definitely not the first three months of the year.

Akemura retorts he will be 17 once the Enchanted Blades have been forged.

He understands that Kunishige does not want him to carry such responsibility because he is Chiaki’s brother, but Akemura, determination covering his face, states that is exactly why he needs to do this.

April 1

The anniversary of the Irishima Talks

Japan has an answer.

It refuses to give either the Datenseki, which has been secretly made into Enchanted Blades, or the Soga Princess, who, as we learn, will marry Kunishige Rokuhira.

Thus began the Seitei War.

Except we skip 8 months later to December.

Some Mikaboshi stalk around the ruins of the Chiba coast looking for something.

The first meeting between the six Mikaboshi Guardians led by Crown Prince Ariu Mikaboshi in two months, their first since October, letting us know the war has been dragging on for this long.
