Vinland Saga Author Revealed the Birthday of its Most Iconic Character

On October 17, 2026, on his Twitter account, Vinland Saga creator Makoto Yukimura announced that Askeladd’s birthday was October 17th.

This has been his tradition with Vinland Saga characters without an identified date of birth as Yukimura has announced throughout 2022: the protagonist Thorfinn on February 3, Canute on July 12, Sigurd on June 10, although announced on November 7, and Hild on November 23.

While most of these, including Askeladd’s, were random choices, prompted on the day the fans ask for them, Yukimura specifically highlighted Hild’s birthday coinciding with Japan’s Labor Thanksgiving Day.

About Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga was written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura in April 13, 2005 for Kodansha, first in Weekly Shōnen Magazine before moving to Monthly Afternoon, ending with 29 volumes and 220 chapters by July 25, 2025.

By August 2022, Vinland Saga had over 7 million copies in circulation.

Vinland Saga is a historical fiction story of Thorfinn Karlsefni, who develops from a ruthless Viking warrior who seeks revenge for his father Thors to a pacifist explorer as he and his people make their way through the New World of Vinland.

After 21 years, Vinland Saga ended on July 25, 2025 with Chapter 220, which we reviewed here.
