Did The Bleach Anime Betray Its Fans? New FINAL BATTLE INCOMING! Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 48 Review!

In the previous Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War episode, as Yhwach finishes draining Ichigo’s powers, Uryu steps in to use his grandfather’s Seed of Destruction, the cause of the Human World’s Distortion, as a means to wipe out both problems and Yhwach, showcasing his greatest feat in the entire series by saving the Three Worlds from destruction, yet Yhwach survives and heads for another fated battle.

Chapters Adapted

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 48 is titled, “The End Two World”

This episode adapts Chapter 681 of the same name (pages 10-17), Chapter 682: “The Two Sided World End”, Chapter 683: “The Dark Side of Two World Ends” and Chapter 684: “The Blade” (pages 1-10) for a total of 4 chapters and 42 pages covered.

Only about 2 and a half chapters remain, which is quite unexpected.

This means that the entire final battle will be anime-original.

Anime-Original Content: Nanao the Healer

The episode begins with Nanao using Kaido to heal everyone (Ichigo, Rukia, Renji, Chad, Ganju and Orihime), lamenting how the late Unohana or Isane Kotetsu would have been needed for these injuries but Orihime walks off to fix Ichigo’s broken Bankai.

However, not even Orihime’s divine-level Rejection of Phenomena can because Yhwach used his ability, The Almighty, to select and alter a future where the blade was destroyed—rendering standard rejection powers ineffective against a rewritten future.

Nanao tells Orihime not to overexert herself.

Rukia tells Nanao to prioritize healing Renji and Ichigo since they are their best chance at stopping Yhwach.

This is some good material to show Nanao’s Kido expertise more, even upscaling her Kaido healing skills, which makes her even more of a necessity as the successor to Chojiro Sasakibe as the right-hand of the head of the Gotei 13.

Where is her giant-ass sword though, the Ise Family Zanpakuto,

Anime-Original Content: Sajin Komamura is Back!

The episode returns to the Soul Society, where Sajin Komamura sees the ghost of his superior, former Head Captain Genryusai Yamamoto.

His last appearance was in Episode 17: “Heart of Wolf”, where he loses his humanity by gaining its fullness for a while for a chance of revenge against Yhwach, only to fail after using up his power to defeat The Explode, Bambietta Basterbine.

This might be his Inner World, which is the 4th anime-original Inner World alongside Ukitake in Episode 29: “The Dark Arm”, Kenpachi in Episode 44: “The Perfect Crimson”, and Shunsui in the previous episode.

Alongside Sokyoku Hill representing his loyalty, proof of this are the irises, which are the flower of Squad 7, representing courage, which is the main theme of Bleach and the solution to the Fear that is found in the cycle of life and death and which Yhwach embodies.

As it happens, he sees some strange lightning bolts around the hazy sky of Seireitei.

Komamura wakes up, now in his current wolf form, and he barks, signalling to Tetsuzaemon Iba that it is time to march against Yhwach.

Given the nature of the episode’s conclusion, it looks like they might actually have some scenes.

Or they would get in the way.

This would be a good chance to actually show off Iba’s mysterious Shikai and even more mysterious Bankai that would certainly make him worthy of being a Captain to replace Wolf Komamura by the end of the series.

Modified Manga Scene: Bankai Repair

Yhwach did destroy Ichigo’s Bankai and with the added power buff from Haschwalth and “The Balance”, which furthers the “impossibility” of its repair.

We now see everything play out like the manga more as the despairing Ichigo, held up by Renji, is stabbed by Shukuro Tsukishima with his Fullbring, Book of the End, similar to how Rukia restored Ichigo’s powers after they were absorbed by Kugo Ginjo as part of his and Tsukishima’s plot, which is quite the perfect inversion.

It is a shame the other Fullbring do not play any role than be Ginjo and Tsukishima’s taxi while the previous cour hinted they could have at least helped the Soul Society with their glorious chicken (Lille) infestation.

Here, Tsukishima inserts a past where he was there and thus Ichigo’s true Bankai was not destroyed.

By “rejecting” the current day, Orihime found a template future made by Tsukishima to reject the present-day damage dealt to Tensa Zangetsu.

The anime adds a lovely scene of Ichigo’s Inner World, where he is drowning in despair like he did in the Lost Agent Arc, the water being ocean blue.

Then we see black and white: the colors of Zangetsu and White, turning the Inner World back to monochrome, which is quite a choice given how monochrome is sometimes associated with depression.

However, in grabbing the Zanpakuto, Ichigo is still within the ocean of rain, as rain represents despair.

He is not 100% “cured”.

Yet it is through Tsukishima, the man responsible for his previous despair.

This is basically Zaheer, the man who destroyed Avatar Korra, being the one to complete her healing journey.

Isshin and Ryuken Finally Do Something

Since their appearance in Episode 40: “My Last Words”, fans have been waiting for what type of move they would make.

While the anime gave bits of buildup through Ryuken’s added screentime in Cour 1 and Cour 3, the manga justs shows Ryuken delivering the Still Silver Arrow to Uryu, which was retrieved from his wife Kanae Katagiri’s body, with Isshin as a companion.

Here, the delivery is quite different.

Ryuken does not show off his crossbow-like Heilig Bogen to shoot the Still Silver arrow closer to Uryu.

Still Silver is a metallic blood clot formed inside the hearts of Quincies who perished during Yhwach’s Auswählen.

Instead, Ryuken and Isshin walk towards Uryu after he fell on a Warhwelt branch after being exhausted from stopping the Seed of Destruction.

Their conversation plays exactly like in the manga.

It is unknown if they will do anything else but since Shunsui led the able Gotei 13 Captains out of Warhwelt into the World of the Living, we might see the bum dad duo get involved in the fight against Yhwach there.

Anime Addition: Yhwach Sets Fire to Seiretei

While in the manga, Yhwach casually walks back to Seireitei like a normal person coming out of a much smaller portal, in the anime, he decides to blacken the entire sky, then float above the Seireitei to torch it the second time, just like he did in Episode 3: “March of the StarCross”.

Blue Flames are getting more prominent use compared to their one-time application in the manga’s start to the War.

All the Soul Reapers panic because no way can these noobs handle God.

100% Manga Faithful: Aizen vs Yhwach

The long-awaited match between the two main villains of Bleach.

And it is 100% faithful to the manga, with one relevant change that improves the presentation of the manga.

Everything in the manga is played out but some fans might have not noticed one detail.

Yhwach ALREADY assumed he was put under Kyoka Suigetsu.

That is because he first attacked “Ichigo” at the end of Chapter 682, and in his second attack, he cut “Renji’s” left hand.

But here, we see it was “Ichigo” who lost his left hand.

In the manga, we do not see any sound effect indicating that upon appearing before Yhwach’s eyes, he lost his hand.

The anime makes the “illusion” much clearer by showing a “swapping” of positions, with “Renji” being the first actual victim while Ichigo was the next one, the one to lose a hand.

Some are disappointed Aizen does not use his Bankai but it does not make sense and Aizen would have no real reason to use it against Yhwach, basically God at this point, someone Aizen despises.

The only other mention of his Bankai came from the novel, “Spirits are Forever with You”, where the Zanpakuto Spirit of Soya Azashiro, the 8th Kenpachi, reveals that anyone affected by Aizen’s Shikai are the only ones affected by Aizen’s Bankai.

The issue is that a Bankai is no mere powerup but the true shape of a person’s soul.

The Blade is Me.

Out of every character, Aizen is the one most reluctant to reveal his true self, especially if such a Bankai could dispel all illusions, which is ironically similar to how his former superior, Shinji Hirako, has a Bankai that works against his comrades due to its indiscriminate effects, while having a vastly superior Shikai for more controlled attacks.

Overall, the lack of added scenes makes the whole fight feel rushed just like the manga when in reality, that was the intent and Kubo never once strayed from it.

It is clear Sosuke Aizen is one of the few major characters that Kubo does not want to alter significantly, apart from adding actual dialogue to his conversation with Yhwach in Muken in Episode 6: “The Fire”, as well as releasing his mouth because Yhwach somehow stole the keys to unlock a few of the seals.

Furthermore, some fans were disappointed that, as shown in the opening, Aizen’s Hado 99: Goryutenmetsu, was in yellow instead of the user’s unique color, in this case purple.

In Bleach: Brave Souls, they apply the color of the user, with Kisuke Urahara’s version from the light novel, “Can’t Fear Your Own World”, being red.

However, this fits more with the lore because the Reishi Aizen gathers comes from the Spiritual Pulse Reimyaku of one of the Three Worlds where it is cast.

Yellow is for the Soul Society or Soul Reapers.

Red is for Hollows or Hueco Mundo.

We do not know the specific color for humans but given Quincies are humans, the World of the Living, the base world, could be Blue.

MASSIVE ANIME CHANGE: The End THREE WORLDS – Three Yhwachs

The biggest change found in this otherwise manga-faithful episode comes after Ichigo seemingly destroys Yhwach with his True Bankai’s Getsuga Tenso.

When Yhwach does respawn and absorb Aizen like in the manga, there is a notable change as there are three Yhwachs.

That is because as the Soul King, the King of Three Worlds, he exists in all Three Worlds.

He begins to assimilate the worlds with his Black Reiatsu, which all have those freaky eyes as they stare down.

Similar to As Nodt’s Vollstandig-enhanced The Fear, which creates a barrier of eyes that compel fear in the target.

This completes the role of As Nodt, the Fear, being a precursor to Yhwach himself.

While this is happening, we see the Soul Reapers handle the mass of Hollows that they were unable to chuck into Senkaimons to the Rukongai last episode.

Tatsuki was in danger in this one, so she scolds Ryunosuke Yuki for not being careful where he fights, which makes him question why he is being scolded by a mortal.

In Hueco Mundo, Yammy’s dog of all things makes a reappearance and he leads Grimmjow, Tier Harribel, Nel, who is riding on Pesche, Dondochakka, Bawabawa and other miscellaneous Hollows.

We do not see Harribel’s Fraccion since they did not join her in Wahrwelt or were not part of the welcoming committee.

Yhwach appears and Grimmjow attacks first, intending to kill Yhwach since he declared himself king and that he needed to go through this guy before he can fight Ichigo.

This is an opportunity to show off more of what the Three Kings of Hueco Mundo can do.

Although Nel is in child form again, she could restore her Reiatsu to fight properly.

Grimmjow might even reveal a new side to his Resurreccion, Panthera.

There is potential for two Vasto Lordes to reveal a Segunda Etapa state or an upgrade ot their Resurreccion that would be needed to overcome the ultimate enemy of Bleach.

In the Human World, Shunsui leads the remaining Gotei 13, with the confirmed able-bodied Captains being Soifon, Byakuya and a kid or normal form Toshiro.

Yhwach declares that because he exists in all Three Worlds, even the Almighty’s ability to change the future is trivial by comparison, hinting at a greater display of his already upscaled power.

Yhwach is leagues above his manga counterpart.

He was already a divine threat.

Here in the anime, he is multiversal, both by tanking the Seed of Destruction nuke that could destroy a whole World and now by appearing in all Three Worlds, Yhwach has supreme power.

He may be able to contend with Hell itself if those forces are tempted to attack due ot the imbalance.

Next Episode Poem: YHWACH

“If you wish to be saved, believe in yourself.

If you believe in yourself, all those who believe in you will be saved.”

This is the third Yhwach poem, the second anime-original one since Episode 27: “A”, where Yhwach, as his younger self, speaks to the downfall of the Soul King, with that youthful form also representing the blood within every Quincy, including Ichigo, which results in Old Man Zangetsu being a younger Yhwach.

This poem is quite layered given Yhwach’s final moment being that he bemoans the despair of death.

Yet this is also something Old Man Zangetsu would say, a younger Yhwach.

The first line is the first part of the theme of Courage, Faith.

That Faith is also what makes Yhwach the God of the Quincy, giving him the strength to keep moving forward in order to face despair, with his version of hope: the destruction of all things.

The second line would also ring true for Ichigo, since that belief is what gives mutual strength and is the key to Courage.

Now with the Soul King’s power and the means to destroy the Three Worlds, Yhwach disposes of all the Quincies he feeds but also nourishes with himself and is now using all that power for his own sake, rather than for the sake of the Quincy and their centuries-long persecution.

Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Episode 49 is titled, “The Blade”

This is the penultimate episode of the entire series.

This will adapt the rest of Chapter 684 in an ANIME-ORIGINAL Final Battle.

A total of 416 episodes will be reached by the final episode, “The Death and the Strawberry”, with the Thousand Year Blood War providing 50 of them.

However, after this episode, Studio Pierrot announced that the anime will be postponed for a month to improve the animation quality of the final two episodes.

It is funny since this episode has been bashed for being “not good enough”, even scoring the lowest among Cour 4’s episodes at 8.3 at IMDB.

This episode will be released on October 19, 2026.
