ANTI-MAGIC AND ASTA’S FATHER FINALLY REVEALED! Black Clover Guidebook Spoilers!

The Perfect Grimoire guidebook confirms that Asta’s Anti Magic was only possible because of his birth, a birth that goes beyond the logic of mortals and devils and into the realm of God.

BLACK CLOVER © 2015 by Yuki Tabata/SHUEISHA Inc.

Black Clover Volume 38 came with a guidebook, which had a special one-shot surrounding Asta’s Coronation as the 29th Wizard King and a guidebook containing as much lore and character details as possible, as well as answering some of the biggest mysteries and plot holes in the manga.

We wrote a separate article detailing the full timeline for Julius Novachrono

Noelle Profile

Noelle is LUMIERE’S DIRECT DESCENDANT

Q: Why did Noelle hold magic power on the scale of a Wizard King?

A: I think it’s because she inherited Lumiere’s blood, which was particularly strongly. Noelle’s mother Acier also had immense magic power.

This was something Lumiere brought up before he returned to his stone form.

Lumiere Silvamillion Clover is the first Wizard King and a distant relative of all three Royal Houses, although considering that he was petrified young and not having any children, his descendants from his other relatives, possibly other siblings, would go on to split into Houses Silva and Vermillion, as we explore in another part of this guidebook.

Noelle and Leviathan

Q: What happened afterward to the sea god Leviathan, who had been accompanying Noelle?

A: Since the crisis facing the world had passed, he returned to the undersea temple and went back to sleep. If something happens, I’m sure he’ll wake again and come to Noelle’s aid.

Devils’ Profiles

Lucifero

Megicula

Lilith and Nahamah

Liebe

More information on Liebe at the end.

Adramelech

His Light attribute, which was only revealed near the end of the story, was a sign of how different he was from other Devils, something that could have had better buildup.

Devil Hierarchy

Between the underworld and the living world stand seven gates, divided into seven layers. The deeper the layer, the higher the devil’s magic power.

The hierarchy chart:

First layer: Lilith (Demon Ice) and Nahamah (Demon Fire)
Second layer: Adrammelech (Light)
Third layer: Baal (Atmosphere)
Fourth layer: Belphegor (Water)
Fifth layer: Asmodeus (Earth)
Sixth layer: Lucifugus (Dark)
Seventh layer: Lucifero (Satan) (Gravity) / Astaroth (Time) ⇄ Megicula (Curse-Warding) / Beelzebub (Space)

The rank in the Underworld is decided at birth, and cannot be overturned.

There is a gate separating the living & underworld, so devils cannot cross.

Because Liebe had no magic power, he unexpectedly slipped through the gate and emerged into the living world.

It is also confirmed that when they were made into Paladins, Moris was given Asmodeus to enable him to use Earth Magic while Acier was given Belphegor, enabling her to use Water Magic, the element of her youngest daughter Noelle.

Spiritual Hierarchy

It is confirmed that there is a clear hierarchy of spirits here.

The Sea God Leviathan, the Five-Headed Dragon and the Guardian Deity Dryad are higher-order beings that approach the strength of spirits.

They arise mainly in strong-magic regions, and some have become the legends of their lands.

In the living world of positive mana, humans and elves are the basic level, with the Guardian Deities as akin to corporeal demigods and the Four Spirits as the rulers, with elves being equal to average to high-ranking Devils in terms of being blessed by mana and the four Highest-Ranking Devils as equivalent to the Four Elemental Spirits.

It is implied that the Five-Headed Dragon, which created and tried to destroy Hino Country, originated from the Underworld due to its overwhelming negative mana causing spatial distortions.

Sister Lily is a Noble

The Q&A asks how Sister Lily ended up in Hage after leaving the royal-noble realm, as shown in her brief backstory in Chapter 350: “The Holy Woman’s Confession”

It is hinted that Sister Lily is of noble birth and quasi-confirmed she was born in the noble realm.

Nacht and Yami Smoking

Nacht stopped smoking after Morgen had died.

Q: Back when Nacht was running around with Yami causing trouble, what kind of things did they actually do?

A: Nothing that crossed into actual crime; more like neighbourhood-delinquent-level pranks. They got into fights a lot, too. Punching out thugs and guys who bullied the weak.

Yami started smoking after Morgen had died.

He quit smoking now out of consideration for Charlotte.

More information on Nacht Faust

Q: The devils you keep as familiars seem to adore you how did you grow so close?

A: It is more that they grew close over time. After Morgen died, Nacht was kind even to the devils. For the devils, compared with the life of abuse they had in the underworld, I think it was a life with colour in it.

Q: Back when you ran around with Yami doing bad things, what sort of things did you get up to?

A: The kind of badness that stops short of crime about the level of neighbourhood brats pulling pranks. We got into fights a lot too. Punching thugs, or guys who were bullying the weak.

Although Nacht is a moral absolutist, he sees weaker Devils as akin to humans due to them being abused, which made him the ideal person to introduce Devil Binding to Asta, as Liebe and Asta needed to come to an understanding and recognize their mutual care for their mother Lichita.

Charlotte’s Curse

Q: Who is the curse mage said to have placed the rose curse on Charlotte?

A: Their name and such are unknown, but they’re a curse mage who holds a deep grudge against the Roselei family and has ties to devils.

In the Clover Kingdom, two families have ties to devils, the Agrippa Family and the Faust Family.

Yuno Profile

This profile points out how people misunderstand Yuno.

He does not have any arrogant assertions over his gift; instead he sees the need to catch up to the amount of effort Asta puts in.

He ironically shares a similar trait with an Asta inspiration, an underdog like Naruto, who hates losing and it is this trait that makes him a rallying point for the Golden Dawn and exactly why Vangeance chose him to be his successor as Captain.

Licht’s Profile

Q: How was the chief of the elf tribe decided?

A: Someone with a four-leaf grimoire, high magic power, upright conduct, leadership, and kindness toward everyone. Licht was a person without a single flaw in the elves’ eyes, so it came about naturally, without anyone having to say a word.

Q: What was it about Tetia that drew Licht in?

A: On Tetia’s side, Licht became someone she was aware of from the moment he first saved her, but on Licht’s side it came about gradually. He was drawn in by Tetia’s pure heart and by an affection deep enough to envelop everything.

Q: Have Licht and Lumiere ever crossed swords, in a mock battle or the like?

A: They never sparred, but even without crossing blades each of them sensed the other’s ability.

The importance of the Four-Leaf Clover Grimoire and the towers indicates that the Elves were the original inhabitants of the Clover Kingdom prior to any human settlement around more than 600 years ago, around the timeframe before Lumiere’s birth.

Movie Wizard Kings

The movie characters all have their character info in the guidebook too, but there are no new wizard kings mentioned.

Nero’s Life

Q: During those 500 years as a bird, how did you mainly spend your time?

A: I did idly watch over the changes in the Clover Kingdom. Other than that, I was the same as an ordinary anti-bird.

Q: Watching the Clover Kingdom for 500 years, what surprised you the most?
A: After 500 years as a bird, you stop being surprised by most things. But when I saw the five-leaf clover of Asta’s grimoire, even I was surprised, I admit.

Q: Do you retain all your memories from your time in bird form?
A: Remembering it all completely would drive one mad, so I deliberately tried not to take much interest in my surroundings. Because of that, my memories are hazy too.

Luck and Charlotte are Cousins

Q: Luck has tremendous battle talent – what kind of person was his father?

A: This isn’t depicted in the story, but Luck’s father is the brother of Charlotte’s father. In other words a noble, and Luck’s mother was not his lawful wife but a mistress. Charlotte and Luck are actually cousins.

This has been an old fan theory in the online community and in a way, this has been half-confirmed.

Both characters also share similar “cursed fates”, with Luck’s battle mania as a result of his inherent non-smiling predisposition and his mother’s praise and Charlotte of course suffering from her Briar Curse.

William’s Curse is Also From Megicula

Q: Are there other mages besides William who wield “World Tree Magic”?
A: World Tree Magic could be called the highest tier of tree- and plant-type magic, and it is quite scarce. There are almost no wielders, it is as rare as Light Magic or more so. Dark Magic likewise has no wielders outside the Land of the Sun, so that one is rare too.

Q: Was there a reason Patri reincarnated into William’s body?
A: It was because their compatibility was good – but since William’s appearance is almost identical to Licht’s, I think Patri’s wish to “become Licht” was not unrelated either. In the end, it became the cause of Patri’s great misunderstanding – an ironic fate…

Q: Is the birthmark on William’s face related to Megicula’s curse?
A: Megicula is the ultimate source of all curses, so yes – it is related.

It is also an interesting coincidence that two Clover Kingdom characters cursed by Megicula and her followers are Plant Magic users like Charlotte and William, with William’s World Tree Magic being the highest-level of Plant Magic that is needed to summon the Tree of Qliphoth.

Nozel and the Megicula Curse

Q: About the side effects of the Curse Magic Nozel received from Megicula – would communicating it in writing also have counted as “speaking” of it?
A: That… would probably not have worked, no. Strictly speaking, it’s not so much that “speaking” is forbidden.- conveying the information itself, by any means, is what’s forbidden. Inside the dream, though, Megicula couldn’t interfere, so there it was safe.

Q: In the dream world, Nozel doted on Noelle, how fond of her is he in reality?
A: If his true feelings were given form as-is, I think he adores her enough that he would behave exactly the same as in the dream (laughs). But he has appearances to keep up, so in reality he would absolutely never do it.

Q: What was the occasion for his bangs taking on that shape?
A: When his mother Acier passed away, the cross was added to his bangs. It’s something close to House Vermillion’s mark of oath, a sign of his resolve to shoulder the family and the squad himself, in his mother’s place.

It seems the cross on his bangs are inspired by Bleach’s Kuchiki Clan expensive hair ornaments or Kenseikan since Nozel is clearly inspired by Byakuya Kuchiki, the seemingly cold-hearted older brother who secretly adores his younger sister.

Dorothy Is a Candidate For Witch Queen

Q: You’ve announced your candidacy as the next Witch Queen – is there something you want to accomplish by returning to the Witches’ Forest?
A: I do think it would be good if I could become a bridge between the Witches’ Forest and the Clover Kingdom. So, compared to my captain days, I am awake somewhat more often.

Q: Dorothy can converse through her snoring, but what is she saying in Chapter 54?
A: We have absolutely no idea what she’s saying (laughs), but she is properly replying to Yami. The nuance is probably something like, “It’s fine, I can hear you, and I can hold a conversation.”

Q: Please tell us Dorothy’s daily schedule. Does she eat meals?
A: She does eat, and she does bathe, she handles everything “while sleeping.” She only actually wakes up at times of Clover Kingdom crisis-level events.

Gordon Family

Q: Gordon’s grandmother Nirenia seemed to hint she knew something about Megicula’s curse – what did she know?

A: Megicula is a very famous devil in Curse Magic circles – something like a god within their faith, so to speak – and among Gordon’s ancestors there were apparently some with connections to it. But Nirenia herself was never personally acquainted with Megicula.

Magna and Baseball

Q: Besides Asta, which squad members have received Magna’s “Baptism Ritual”?
A: Magna and Luck joined at the same time, and the next ones in after them were Noelle and Asta, so… Asta is the only one who got Magna’s “Baptism Ritual.” That said, he does sometimes put other members through similar rites. And on rare occasions, oddballs show up uninvited asking to join the squad, he’s been known to chase that sort off while calling it a “Baptism Ritual” too.

Q: Magna’s beloved broom is named the “Crazy Cyclone” , and he’s really into so-called delinquent culture. Was he actually a delinquent before he became a mage?
A: Oh, he was. He heard the stories from Yami’s wild, rampaging days, and idolised him long before they ever met.

Q: A lot of Magna’s attacks are modelled on something a lot like real-world baseball – is baseball big in his home village of Rayaka?
A: Baseball is hugely popular in Rayaka Village, and Magna played it all the time as a kid.

Gauche’s Left Eye Magic Tool

Q: Where did the mirror magic tool implanted in his left eye come from?

A: It’s a magic tool House Adlai acquired back when they were still nobility.

Grey’s Real Name

It is confirmed that Cinderalla Grey’s real name is Claire Whitely.

In her flashback in Chapter 244: “Cinderalla Grey”, we do get her surname, Whitely, which could be from her father, who married the stepmother that already had two haughty daughters prior to the marriage.

And Whitely is tied to the color theme behind her name, Grey.

Remaining Two Shining Generals

We got the names of these two nameless Shining Generals, who were made puppets by Vanica in Chapter 277: “Queen of Briars”

The one to the left is Kugas while the one to the right is Motas.

Asta is Too Busy

Q: Does he ever go back to Hage Village?

A: Very occasionally. But he’s so busy that it’s a question of whether he can even manage once a year.

Anti-Magic FINALLY EXPLAINED

On Liebe’s profile, we got an explanation for what Anti-Magic is and how it was born

“A power that refuses to accept an opponent’s magic- the foe of all magic! It manifested at the end of a single-minded hatred for the devil who took Richita from him. Precisely because he had no magic to begin with, it became a power able to counter devils with enormous magic. Even while sealed inside the grimoire he could manifest the devil’s power in part, saving Asta from desperate straits again and again!!”

Q: Why does Asta have no magic power? The secret lies in his ‘connection’ with his mother!!

A: Asta’s mother, Licita, had a special constitution that drained the magic power and life force of anyone close to her. Before he was born, Asta had his magic power taken, but while he was still connected to Licita (in the womb), his life force was not drained.

Furthermore, we got confirmation that Licita’s magic attribute is Sealing, like Secre.

Asta’s FATHER

Q: Asta fought his way through everything despite the handicap of being magicless. As readers know, his mother is Licita, but who, then, is his father? Was he some unusual mage who trained his physical body? Or a fool who abandoned his wife?

A: Some might even speculate he was a devil from the underworld. But since Licita’s constitution drained the life force and magic of anyone near her -and it worked on humans and devils alike- none of these theories hold up well.

The only answer that can reasonably be argued is that, whether by an act of God or the work of a devil, Licita conceived Asta, the destined child who would save the world, alone.

The Guidebook’s Final Message from Tabata Hints There Will Be No Sequel

“Good morning, everyone!! Good afternoon!! Good eveniiiing!!

Thanks to all of you, I’ve been able to put out one last wonderful book like this – Tabata here!

Since Black Clover reached its end, I’ve had more chances to get out and about – taking part in my daughter’s primary-school events, going along to the preview of the Black Clover

Exhibition, popping in to the office in Yurakucho, and sitting in meetings at Shueisha, exclaiming ‘So THIS is society…!’ day after day.

This wonderful book, too, was made by five or six blokes holed up in a Shueisha meeting room for hours on end, groaning away as our brains short-circuited.

I’m sure you all had a rough time of it afterwards as well. Thank you so very much!!

For that meeting, I got the time wrong and turned up thirty minutes late.

At the appointed hour, I was in the Pokémon Centre.

You’re a disgrace of a functioning adult!!

I really am terribly sorry!!

In the previous official guidebook, Volume 16.5, I wrote that my constitution had grown feeble and I could no longer stomach rich, heavy ramen -but this time, a little while back, I finally came down with hay fever, and thanks to a cedar-pollen allergy I can no longer eat apples or pears.

DAMN IT ALLLLLL!!

Have you any idea how much apple juice I used to driiiink?!!
Have you any idea how much I love peaaaars?!!
But then, Black Clover brought this many characters into the world,
and so many people have come to love it and to read it,
so I’ve ended up feeling, ‘Well then, that’s
all right!!’ – and I remain bathed in light.
Beside me, my daughter is wolfing down ramen and glugging apple juice.
At any rate, I fully intend to play to my heart’s content
with my wife, my daughter and the dog! Wooooo–!!
Thank you all so very, very much!!!”

Considering how exhausted manga work has been for him throughout his journey, causing him much pain and time apart from his beloved family, he will likely choose not to add more Black Clover, which is also shown with the amount of lore revealed here.
