Beyond Netero vs Kurapika is COMING! Hunter x Hunter Chapter 412 Spoilers!

We are finally about to get the one of the most anticipated matchups in the entire arc: Beyond Netero vs Kurapika!

HUNTER X HUNTER © 1998 by Yoshihiro Togashi/SHUEISHA Inc.

In the previous Hunter x Hunter chapter, Kurapika reveals that 14th Prince Woble is not qualified to join the Succession War, meaning the baby is a fake Prince

Hunter x Hunter Chapter 412 is titled “Question”

This chapter has 19 pages.

Editor’s note: “Approximately one and a half months remaining until arriving to the New Continent—”

Five hours before the declaration of Special Martial Law.

The chapter begins with the guards doubting Kurapika’s words and asking if the lower-ranking princes have a chance of survival if they manage to run away and hide out until the time limit?

They also note that the 14th Prince was not even participating in the Succession War to begin with.

Given the shock of Kurapika’s revelation, Kurapika states that the seminar is postponed until 10 AM.

This is in two hours, as the previous chapter took place at 8 AM.

This would still be before the funeral at 1 PM and by then Special Martial Law is in effect.

Also note that during the Funeral, Borksen’s recruitment to Morena’s camp from Chapters 407 to 410, the Negotiation mini-arc, takes place.

Chrollo is also searching for a Nen user to augment his Skill Hunter in Chapter 406: “Sacred Treasure”

We cut to a flashback.

Approximately 48 hours before the declaration of the Special Martial Law, meaning Day 10.

In Day 10, notable events include Halkenburg’s arrest in Chapter 389: “Curse” and ends with Longhi’s alliance with Kurapika and reveal of Beyond Netero’s children in Chapter 401: “Moonlight”.

In fact, this flashback takes place immediately after the conversation with Longhi, with Kurapika being surprised that someone would scheme to sneak their own child in among the princes.

He is more worried about the presence of Beyond Netero’s biological children who were cursed, and lift any curse directed on the 14th Prince.

Oito clarifies she has no relationship with Beyond and even lets Kurapika use his chains on her.

Kurapika says that he never once suspected or even feel the need to verify.

Kurapika orders Shimano to prepare their meal but the maid clarifies her name is actually Shimanu.

We get a funny scene of Kurapika trying to pronounce the “nu”.

Bill remarks that Kurapika cannot distinguish or properly pronounce Kakin’s triple-blended consonants and double-blended consonants anyway.

It is because in the unique Kakin language, there are ‘masculine sounds’ and ‘feminine sounds.’ If you say ‘Shimano,’ it actually becomes a man’s name.

However, Shimano has noted that Kurapika has been able to say it correctly before and Kurapika apologizes if he has made her uncomfortable but the maid says it is okay.

This is another example of how gender-affirming Togashi is while emphasizing the cultural nuances of his intricate world.

This is good worldbuilding.

Bill brings up something, which leads Kurapika into resolving all doubts and begins his lie detection test through questions with no particular meaning that require only a yes or a no as the response.

You are a man. No.

You are two years old. No.

This bit is quite cute.

You are a woman. Yes

You are a mother. Yes

Kurapike then tells Oito to answer “yes” to all questions moving forward.

You are currently flying in the sky. Yes. Lie.

You are currently on a ship. Yes. Truth.

You are currently riding in a tank. Yes. Lie.

Your only child is the 14th Prince. But with hesitation, she says yes. This is Truth.

Then Kurapika asks if the prince sleeping over there right now… is the prince he held two months ago at the hotel where the interview took place.

Oito pauses and says “Woble is my child”.

Kurapika insists she answer with a yes but then Oito is startled that Kurapika knew, asking if it was Shimano.

This is where that pronunciation plays a part.

Bill saw the pronunciation nuances.

The female ‘pu’ sound, mixed with a slight semi-voiced tone, and the male ‘bu’ sound, created using the teeth without closing the lips, are relatively distinct.

At first, the Queen used the neutral ‘pu’, but at some point she began switching between those two sounds.

It’s a very subtle difference, and many native speakers can’t even use them distinctly.

The Queen began using those two sounds shortly after they set sail and it was right around the time Kurapika first used his Chains.

Oito selectively used the vowels to avoid being detected and noticed.

To hide the truth that this Woble in the Black Whale is actually a boy.

What is funny is that this was set up with a “mistake” as early as Chapter 368 in Page 12,

In English, it’s written as “It’s for Wobble, I’m not doing it for you.”

However, in the Japanese version she says “musuko no tame ni yatte iru koto.”

Musoko is “son”, the male form of “child” in Japanese, as opposed to “Musume” or daughter.

Kurapika asks who is Woble the child of, to which Oito says that he is her sister’s son and she entrusted her daughter to her sister.

The real Woble’s hand was used for the Seed Urn but the one in the Black Whale is her nephew, therefore this child has no qualification to participate in the Succession War, let alone her daughter.

At first, ‘not participating’, an act of treason, was impossible, so Oito thought she would be a target for a purge.

So she decided to appear to participate at first glance and when the truth will be exposed, she would confess that the child had ‘no qualification’ and beg for forgiveness.

Kurapika confirmed that Oito told the truth and they were all outsiders.

It is now 10 AM and Nen class has resumed.

Slakka was the only one who withdrew and he was not even a student in the first place.

Kurapika intended to use this risky truth to remove the soldiers of the 1st or 3rd Prince to make his announcement that the 14th Prince is disqualified more credible and thus reduce the danger of them being targeted.

There were mixed results behind Oito’s decoy strategy.

Instead, enemies are still  maintaining the status quo, suspecting the real successor might still be hidden.

Despite the lingering danger, Kurapika recognizes that simply being off the 1st Prince’s immediate radar as a target is a small victory.

He plans to proceed with his Nen training classes, intending to use his unique abilities and critical information as-leverage to maintain fragile alliances with the 3rd and 5th Princes.

A secondary, urgent crisis involves a deadly post-mortem Nen curse placed by Beyond on his biological children.

Because the curse would be instantaneous and impossible for a baby to defend against, Kurapika is desperate for information.

Realizing they lack the curse’s specific conditions and targets, they conclude that their best option is to confront Beyond himself to find a way to break it.

In Beyond’s cell, he is visited by the Supreme Magistrate Cleapatro (whose name is based on the famous Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII).

While acting as the supreme magistrate of the Supreme Court in the Black Whale, considering Kakin is moving to the Dark Continent (publicly), this person is the Chief Justice of Kakin and the third highest official, as well as the second highest-ranked individual in the country, with First Prince Benjamin ranked below them since he is only a deputy adviser of the Armed Forces and thus advices the actual Chief of Staff, although considering Benjamin directly controls the Army, it is implied he holds real power here.

Although they requested privacy, the Zodiacs Kanzai (Tiger) and Saiyu (Monkey) refuse, saying strict surveillance protocols to prevent secret dealings with VIPs and how strange it is for Kakin’s Supreme Magistrate to meet with an international criminal like Beyond Netero.

With the guards listening, the official delivers two major legal updates to Beyond: International Charges Dropped: All lawsuits brought against Beyond by the V5 regarding his New World Voyage broadcast have been dropped via a plea bargain.  Beyond acknowledges that this simply shifts his legal obligations over to his secret agreement with the Kakin Empire.

Beyond’s Counter-Lawsuits Dismissed: Beyond asks about the status of the lawsuits he filed himself, estimating there were about a hundred. The official corrects him, stating there were exactly 1,047 cases, and reveals that the Supreme Court collectively dismissed every single one of them.

Ultimately, Beyond is cleared of his international crimes, but his own legal counter-attacks have been entirely rejected.

Following the news that his lawsuits were dismissed, Beyond Netero engages in a heated debate with the Kakin Supreme Magistrate regarding the nation’s lack of human rights and the legal inequality between the royal family and ordinary citizens.

The official counters with a major revelation and several key points:

Pre-existing Reforms: King Nasubi was actually already in the process of amending the constitution to ensure “equality under the law for the royal family and the people,” rendering Beyond’s lawsuits redundant.

A Mountain of Paperwork: The official presents a massive stack of boxes containing the complete judicial records and the new constitutional amendments.

Killing Time: Acknowledging the absolute power of the King, Beyond decides to use the enormous pile of legal documents as- reading material to simply “kill time” until they reach their destination.

Comedic Banter: Beyond starts skimming through massive files at an impossibly fast rate.

When he admits he’s just looking at the printed words to pass the time, it enrages the already-stressed Zodiacs.

They angrily threaten him with the “death penalty” while Beyond playfully mocks them to the Zodiacs.

Also apparently, we got confirmation that Cleapatro is a woman and that Beyond has known her since she was a child.

Most Chief Justices are around 35 to 40 years old and Beyond has been going around making babies for 30 years, which fits the timeline.

Editor’s note: “A shocking truth is revealed!! Is Woble safe..?”
