Will the Attack on Titan Anime Return?
The upcoming MAPPA anniversary event could bring back the Attack on Titan fandom after 3 years.
On June 5, 2026, it was announced that Attack on Titan will take part in MAPPA’s 15th anniversary event on June 19 and will have new information.
On the panel will be series director Yuichiro Hayashi (who is currently working on Dorohedoro) and Yui Ishikawa, the voice actress for Mikasa Ackerman.
There is some speculation over what this new information could be.
MAPPA could follow the lead of Studio Bones, who saw the completion of the My Hero Academia story even beyond the manga content with an OVA from the Guidebook.
This could mean that Side Story 4: Bad Boy might be adapted under the same animation team led by Hayashi.
This is an extra chapter written by Hajime Isayama himself, from the Shingeki Fly Artbook released on May 1, 2024.
Another possibility put forward is the spinoff manga “Attack on Titan: Before the Fall” (2013-2019) written originally as a light novel by Ryō Suzukaze and illustrated by Satoshi Shiki, with input from the original author himself.
However, there is precedent for such an adaptation in the form of the 2014 two-episode OVA, “A Choice with No Regrets”, which adapts the 2013 manga and visual novel spinoff by Gun Snark of the same title, as well as the three Lost Girls episodes (2017-2018), adapting most of the “Attack on Titan: Lost Girls” (2015-2016) manga by Ryōsuke Fuji based on the light novel by the anime’s main scriptwriter, Hiroshi Seko.
With the “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” compilation film adapting Volume 34’s High School Castes omake, fans have also been anticipating for an adaptation of the new Side Story, especially since unlike the original manga ending, the anime sets up Levi, Falco, Gabi, Yelena and Onyankopon’s lives together restoring the outside world after the Rumbling.
The Bad Boy side story talks about a portion of Levi’s childhood, focusing on what happened to his deceased mother’s teacup and explains one of his habits, namely how he holds cups, which all leads into the reveal of how exactly Levi awakened as an Ackerman.
