This chapter explores Brook’s poor childhood, his close bond with King Reuven and perhaps a hint to Candelle’s origins.

In the previous One Piece chapter, we begin Brook’s second flashback from 70 years ago when he was a 20-year old Captain of the Esperia Kingdom’s Battle Convoy.

One Piece Chapter 1184 is titled, “All Become Just Bones In Death”

This chapter has 13 pages.

Another short chapter.

Cover Page Request: “Brook getting shocked by Portuguese men-of-war while sea bathing.”

Brook is floating in the sea on a pool float (an inflatable tube).

Underneath the water, he is being shocked by several Portuguese man-of-war.

Of course, because Brook being a skeleton, the electricity doesn’t affect him at all, and he’s making a thumbs-up gesture. Another funny detail: the jellyfish all have eyes like Imu.

Editor’s note: “Back in Brook’s younger days!”

The chapter takes place 7 years after the previous one, with Princess Shuri growing into a fine beauty at 14 years, with five princes from neighboring countries attempting to propose to her but she easily defeats them, saying that she has no interest in weak men or those who cannot play music.

She is still in love with Brook, who is now 27 years old, as she asks Brook if strong women are his type.

However, while she notes that she has become prettier, Shuri wonders if her chest will get bigger too, which Brook tells her to knock it off while Shuri says that he sounds like her dad.

As she hangs out with Brook, Shuri spots Brook asking for women’s panties, which causes Shuri to throw her sword at his afro for not taking his own advice.

“Cows~ and frogs too / Slaves and kings alike♪ / In the end, we’re nothing but bones~~♪

And that’s the end of it~♪

Yo-ho-ho!”

As Brook plays music, Shuri asks if he likes her father and mother, with Brook explaining that he considers Reuven his great benefactor, saying that if he never met her father, he would be nothing but bones

We cut to 16 years before or 79 years before the present day.

An 11 year old Brook watches from the window of a school, where the kids play musical instruments, with Brook remarking that they are using real instruments that make beautiful sounds.

The people drive him away as he stinks and is a dirty brat, to the point of being treated as a stain to their prosperous kingdom.

Brook sings poorly with a makeshift violin made of junk, singing about how he will make real music yet also mourning the suffering of his parents and his little brother from hunger, only eating frogs and grasshoppers.

He holds the king responsible, which is common due to how many Kingdoms seek status with the Celestial Dragons or are too poor to pay the Heavenly Tribute or hoard more resources for themselves while having enough for the Tribute.

We see a 21-year-old Reuven, which means he is 10 years older than Brook and in the current chapter’s timeline, he would be 38 years old.

Reuvenremarks that Brook’s lyrics are awful but compliments the junk violin, which makes Brook think the “old man” (due to Reuven’s rugged appearance) is his fan.

Reuven also notes how weird Brook’s laugh is and Brook in turn asks if he could call Reuven his “big bro” (aniki in Japanese).

Brook treats him to a bowl of grasshoppers and frogs stew and surprisingly they taste good.

Brook says that he caught some and that the secret ingredient is curry powder he stole from some Marine ships that show up, with Reuven saying that Brook revealing this defeats the purpose of it being secret.

This is amazing exploration on the class division of One Piece already, this time implementing the Marines since they have sufficient stocks while people like Brook starve in a seemingly prosperous Kingdom.

Most of all, we have a fairly humble Prince who does not mind the gross conditions of Brook’s junkyard and enjoyed hanging out with the boy.

This contrasts with the Prince’s routine as he recalls his expensive soup, whichfeatures dollar-abalones caught off the coast of the Euro Peninsula, simmered in red wine…and A6-rank Ruby Beef (basically One Piece wagyu beef).

He was introduced to the daughter of the Soufflé Conglomerate, who graduated at the top of her class from Enoa Academy to be made into a potential bride.

In spite of this, the Prince thinks Brook’s dish tastes better to the point he is crying, probably because he is eating with a friend.

Reuven offers to pay but Brook says there is no need, seeing as both are living hard lives in the junkyard.

Brook does not know the man he is with is royalty.

The two continue bonding as Reuven brings booze and catches an octopus to eat while Brook sings.

One day at Cielo Port, Brook was caught and beaten up by the Marines, who were loading instruments into their ship.

The captain asks where Brook hid the powder but Brook says that he knows nothing and the Marines got it all wrong.

The Marines were shocked to learn Brook only stole curry powder instead of drugs.

It seems we got some corrupt Marines involved in illegal activity.

Brook sings the song he sang at the start, which acts as a comfort song for him as it reminds him that death is ordinary and small, just as how it was for his family, who were neglected by the world to hunger.

The Marines decide to kill the boy to hide their secrets and chase after the gang who actually stole the drugs from them.

Suddenly, there was an explosion from behind, with the Marines recognizing Rueven as a Prince in front of Brook.

Rueven immediately embraces the injured Brook, saying he was worried about Brook.

The Royal Convoy tells the Prince to step back and let them take care of the corrupt Marines but the Prince wants to get back at them for what they did to Brook.

A Transponder Snail confirms that the Convoy has captured the Muuron Gang dealers and the drug courier.

One soldier tells the Prince not to let his emotions guide him since the Marines are under the World Government’s protection but Reuven says that if the Government shields trash like them, the world is truly doomed.

Candelle, the then-Captain of the Battle Convoy before Brook, tells the Prince she is his “Devoted BladE”

“Devoted Blade”? Hmmmm…

It sounds quite suspicious like Candelle uses an oddly-specific term that is tied to the Holy Knights of Mary Geoise.

Anyway, this leads to the future King and Queen to fight together with their swords.

This leads to Brook’s admiration for swords.

The crowd admires Candelle for saving the Kingdom.

Inside the Esperia Palace, Brook wakes up in a bed, with Candelle preparing tea.

Brook is taking in the fact his friend is the Prince, with Reuven apologizing as he never meant to lie to Brook and that had too much fun with him.

Reuven also mentions that Brook tell no one about the “curry powder” he stole, which meant that Brook did steal the drugs and had absolutely no idea that is what made his gross dishes tasty…or addictive.

Good to know.

Candelle brings up how they feared the worst when Reuven kept disappearing but she is surprised that the Prince had a good time with a “cute friend”.

With that nudge to the nose, Brook fell in love with a nosebleed, which made her worry.

This explains not only Brook’s love for Candelle, a married woman but possibly his affection for older women in general.

The chapter ends with Reuven ordering for a room to be given to Brook at the barracks, to give him real instruments and to have him study in school since he is a rising star in the Esperia Kingdom.

Brook, meanwhile, cries tears of joy in his bed as he is about to have the best life ever thanks to the Prince.

Editor’s note: “He will never forget this debt…”

The series will be on break in the next issue. It will return in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 29.”
