We Have Bad News for Frieren Season 2 Fans

As fans praise the return of the current highest-ranked anime on MAL, Frieren Season 2’s episode count causes some concerns.

On January 15, 2026, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 has been released

Episode 1 is titled, “Shall We Go, Then?” and adapts Chapter 61: “Magic-Nullifying Crystal” and Chapter 62: “Why I Set Out on This Journey” to start the Continued Northern Travels Arc (Chapter 61 to Chapter 70: “The Norm Company”

However, while many fans have eagerly enjoyed the return of the popular fantasy anime adaptation after a 2-year wait, this news will come as a shock.

It has been confirmed that Season 2 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will only have 10 episodes.

This means only two short arcs will be fully adapted, the Continued Northern Travels Arc and Divine Revolte Arc (Chapter 71: “Subjugation Request” to Chapter 76: “Settling”), which is a total of 16 chapters.

However, with the adaptation rate of 2 chapters per episode it is more likely that the start of the Golden Land Arc (Chapter 77: “A Thunder of Dragons” to Chapter 104: “A Visit to Her Grave”) will be included.

Episode 2, to be released on January 22, 2026, is titled, “Hero of the South” and will likely adapt Chapter 63 of the same name and Chapter 64: “The Demon with a Sword”

Of note, Frieren has “dethroned” itself, taking the top spot from MAL (MyAnimeList) from Frieren Season 1, which is now in second place

Opening Theme

The opening theme is “lulu.” by Mrs. Green Apple, an emotional tribute to Frieren’s journey, from her reminiscing the Hero’s Party to waking up, with a flower crown together with Fern and Stark, while showing us all the characters we will meet this season.

It is actually ironic that this is the band that plays “Inferno”, Opening 1 of Season 1 of Fire Force and we see the artist behind Soul Eater’s first opening play for its final cour.

Ending Theme

The ending theme is “The Story of Us” by Milet, once again returning to do another ending theme for Frieren.

The ending is a one-of-a-kind work as it is one of the few fully hand-drawn animated sequences in the last decade.

The colored pencil style by Mimei Aoume, who has done work on a segment of One Piece Episode 1129: “”Kuma’s Past – Better Off Dead in This World”, showing Kuma performing the Nika dance for Jewelry Bonney with the same style as this opening.

The soft, hand-drawn visuals perfectly complement the series’ reflective tone, creating an emotional and artistic finale that stands out from typical anime endings

Staff for Episode 1

Storyboard and Episode Director: Tomoya Kitagawa (Season 2 director)

Animation Director: Akiko Takase

Key Animators: Mayuko Kamitori, Hiroyuki Kobashi, Ayaka Satou, Daiki Harashina, Runa Harano, Yuusuke Yaegashi, Kanata Yanagisawa, Ryouta Yamawaki, Daiki Tanaka, Juri Toida, Yuka Hirata, Kouta Mori, Kyouko Yufu

Kitagawa has taken over for Frieren Season 1 director, Keiichirō Saitō, who was noted to have been burnout by the massive workload, having also directed Bocchi the Rock Season 1.

Saitō still remains as co-director and may likely direct other episodes.

He is a close colleague of the previous director and has worked on 4 episodes of Season 1, namely storyboarding Episodes 2, 8, 18, and 25, directed all but Episode 18, and was Chief Episode Director for Episodes 17 to 28, essentially helping Saitō with the latter half of Season 1.
