Has Vinland Saga Season 3 Started Production?

Amidst spiralling rumors regarding the coming of Vinland Saga’s long-awaited third season, the author himself has directly confirmed to have no knowledge of any upcoming anime production.

Recently, posts have circulated regarding an interview with the author, Makoto Yukimura, by the French newspaper, Le Monde, confirming that production has been prepared but this is from January 16, 2025, close to a year old, and does not explictly indicate that production has officially started.

However, on January 8, 2026, in a recent tweet, Makoto Yukimura himself has come forward and said that he has no knowledge of any anime production at the moment.

However, there are better places to find proof that production might be currently underway.

On October 23, 2025, the anime’s character designer, Takahiko Abiru, posted a curious tweet, stating “Let’s go hard” through auto-translation, and many fans believe it might be hinting that MAPPA and the staff under series director Shuhei Yabuta are already working on Season 3, which will adapt the third arc, the Eastern Expedition Arc (Chapter 100 to 165).

In addition, on his Instagram account, Abiru has been sharing one of his older Vinland Saga illustrations almost every day, akin to a countdown, a pattern he followed back in 2021, right before the announcement of Season 2, which took place on July 7, 2021,

The most recent post was from December 28, 2025.

However, this could also mean that Abiru is building up hype and anticipation in preparation for when there is confirmation of production starting.

A few months ago, a member of Twin Engine (the anime’s production company and investor) mentioned that they wanted to continue the series, but the animation team and MAPPA studio were focused on other projects, with this batch being part of the ongoing Hell’s Paradise and some previous projects such as Zenshu and Lazarus.

Twin Engine made it clear that they would only move forward with Vinland Saga if they could keep the same staff from the previous seasons (director Yabuta, Abiru, and all the other key members).

The staff in turn have also requested fans to appeal to Twin Engine by tagging them in tweets or posts to show there is demand for the return of the series.

Vinland Saga has recently concluded its 20-year run on July 25, 2025 after 220 chapters and 29 volumes.
