YURA FLASHBACK!!! Kagurabachi Chapter 104 Spoilers!

In the previous Kagurabachi chapter, Chihiro uses Suzaku’s flames to purify Yura of the foreign power of Magatsumi.

Kagurabachi Chapter 104 is titled, “Heroes”

This chapter has 19 pages.

Editor’s note: “In a past, following immediately after the ending of the Seitei War..”

The chapter begins with a flashback of Yura’s past, of his memories from around 18 years ago by the end of the Seitei War.

We see Yura as a married man preparing food for his wife, as we see Yura’s wife with a wedding ring on his left hand.

The wife was impatient but Yura gently tells her to wait as the food will be ready.

Yura’s name is written differently, instead of , which means “secluded” or “ghost”, it was “由良”, which means “kindness”, “gentleness”, or “superiority”.

During the war, the enemy island, Shikoku, occupied portions of Japan and a month after the war, former territories were slowly being reclaimed.

It seems that Yura and his family have been living under the stress of the war and Yura’s wife expresses how she did not expect their lives to return to normal like this.

The woman suggests showing gratitude to the “heroes” and Yura agrees.

As it turns out, Soga was viewing Yura’s memories, which were coming up in the midst of battling Chihiro and Samura.

This is such a natural way to show someone’s flashback, by having Soga lending the Magatsumi’s power view the memories of his host.

Soga now understands why Yura wanted the Shinuchi as he was one of the citizens from the former occupied territories.

We return to the flashback, where Yura expresses his hopes that the “heroes” of the Seitei War will continue to protect them for years to come.

Yura’s wife is still begging for her meal and then we cut to black.

It seems like at this point, something is supposed to happen.

But we return to the present day, where Yura falls with the flames of mercy, Suzaku, covering his whole body.

He recalls how the Magatsumi is the highest quality of the Enchanted Blades, such that it bypasses the conditions of the Lifelong Contracts to allow anyone who has imbued it with Spirit Energy to use the tip of its powers.

However, this comes with an equivalent exchange: with great power, there is a greater encroachment.

The borrower of the Shinuchi’s powers will have their body be consumed by the blade and its original bearer, the Sword Saint Soga Akemura.

During the final fight between Kyora Sazanami and Chihiro, Storehouse began to collapse due to Kyora’s Sorcery Nerves being “eaten up” as a result of the encroachment.

The Shinuchi’s encroachment follows the same principle as the Lifelong Contract itself as the Enchanted Blade’s power will eat up the Sorcery Nerves.

After being cut off from his Lifelong Contract thanks to Samura’s usage of Suzaku, Uruha was able to reawaken his Sorcery. 

Going back to the Magatsumi, the more the encroachment eats up the body and Sorcery nerves, the stronger one’s connection to the Shinuchi becomes and thus the greater the power boost from the Enchanted Blade.

The black in Yura’s sclerae begin to fall off due to how Suzaku is actually healing Yura’s Sorcery Nerves and reversing the encroachment process.

Yura’s Deepest Goal

Chihiro asks Yura what exactly is he doing all of this for, recalling the chaos caused by Genichi Sojo and using the Rakuzaichi auction for his plans.

Saying everything is Yura’s fault, Chihiro calls for him to let go of the Enchanted Blade.

However, Yura reminds Chihiro that even before the Seitei War, the world retained the same shape, especially the abuses of the old Sorcerer Clans like the Sazanamis and the Rakuzaichi auctions.

Sorcery was kept a secret ever since ancient times but the Seitei War revealed the existence of Sorcerers as they were responsible for Japan’s defense and that forced the creation of the Kamunabi as a public enforcer.

The Underworld that had always exploited the weak, as in regular people or weaker or less privileged Sorcerers, became more active because Sorcerers were a public entity.

Ever since the Seitei War ended, the weak continued to be exploited and oppressed in every aspect of society and the Kamunabi could not do anything about it.

Yura believes that with the Shinuchi, with the Enchanted Blades, he could change the status quo.

As he repeats Chihiro’s words about it being the Hishaku’s fault, we see an image of Yura’s dead wife pop up, showing how angry Yura is at this point.

Yura asks who it was that sealed away the Enchanted Blades and thus kept away the power to vanquish evil.

Yura screams that Chihiro’s father created this cursed world.

He asks this to Chihiro, as if insisting that Kunishige sealed away the Enchanted Blades at the wrong time, as it was when the sins of the Sword Saint and the Enchanted Blades were kept hidden that Yura would lose his wife, likely to remnants from the war that still wanted to keep hold of these territories.

By depriving Japan of a means to reshape its still-chaotic post-war world, for Yura, Kunishige had done a massive injustice.

It seems that Kasen, the treacherous director of Kamunabi, actually fully shared Yura’s agenda.

Both men had the exact same concern: humans, specifically Sorcerers, can only do so much to bring order and rein in the abusive, archaic Sorcerer Clans like the Sazanami.

For both men, the Enchanted Blades, guided by action, would bring order in the chaos of Sorcerers.

However, it feels like while both men are moved by the same frustration, Kasen lacks the will Yura has, a will molded by incredible trauma that Kasen, a bureaucrat, would not have any grasp of.

This explains Yura’s single-minded devotion to acquire the Shinuchi, even just saying he only wants to wield it, such that his goal, his personhood, would only be revealed by holding the coveted Blade.

That devotion that he would learn from Kyora’s obsession with the Rakuzaichi and share with Genichi Sojo when he possessed Cloud Gouger, another Enchanted Blade, was a brilliant way for a character to gradually reveal his fullest self and Hokazono delivered one of the best character exposition moments in modern shonen with this chapter.

The Sword Saint Possesses Yura

Everything turns silent.

As Chihiro and Yura clashed mid-air, the Sword Saint sees and resonates with what Yura felt.

This anger opened the gateway to more power.

Chihiro sensed that the Shinuchi’s encroachment has massively increased, which reminded Chihiro of his battle with Kyora.

Will the Sword Saint fully take over Yura’s body or will Suzaku purge the encroachment?

This is a tug of war.

Kyora stopped the encroachment with his devotion to the Rakuzaichi but in the end, he died from the strain.

Activating “Aka: Suzaku”, Chihiro plunges Enten into Yura, once again burning Yura with the flames of mercy.

Magatsumi separates from Yura, who falls to the ground burning.

Soga recalls asking Yura what he is.

This ties back to the change in kanji, from Yura having a proper name to Yura as in a “ghost” or “nobody”.

Yet now this extends to the Hishaku, who are all “nobodies”.

Hiruhiko was an orphan after all.

And this line of thinking could imply that Uran, the ice woman, was probably from the same oppressed clan of ice-skinned women as the prisoner Hakuri took care of.

The burning Yura declares that “heroes” are always necessary.

Soga tells Yura not to tense up as Yura will gain his body “real soon” but first he will be the “hero” Yura needs and will take care of everything.

As Soga collapses in his cell, he reawakens inside Yura’s body, which bursts into flowers far more than before.
