Will Bonney Become the Newest Straw Hat? One Piece SBS Volume 113 Explained
We might have a hint as to who the next Straw Hat might be.
In the previous SBS volume, we learned about Scopper Gaban’s role in the Roger Pirates and more details about the New Giant Warrior Pirates.
Thanks to Pewpiece and Will of Marco for the translations before the November 4 volume release.
Does Zunesha Poop?

READER: “Does Zunesha poop?”
ODA: “Gross!! That’s the first question?! Disgusting!! Naturally, it poops! Naturally, some adventurer makes land there. “This whole island feels like a swamp…” Then eventually, the island sinks and becomes nutrients for the sea. -Like hell it does!! But of course it poops, naturally.”
Vivi’s Future

We have a classic Oda tradition, drawing characters when they reach the age of 40, their prime, and when they get older at aged 60.
READER: “I’d love to see what Vivi looks like at ages 40 and 60! I’ve sprayed some “Sanadacchi repellant” so you can rest easy this summer! – From: Ramenmaru”
ODA: “Yay! No more Sanada! As thanks, I’ll draw it!”
Age 40: “Let’s go, Karoo! Toward East Blue!”
Ag60 “My, you’re quite good, Autu
A future where something happens:
Age 40: “I’ll make ya dizzy, ya bastard!!!”
Age 60: “Luffy? Oh yeah… there used to be a guy like that…”
It looks like there are two futures: one where Vivi remains the ruler of Arabasta and the other where there are many changes to her path.
At age 40, we see a point where she could have become a pirate.
At age 60, we see her return the Nefeltari Family to the upper world to become a Celestial Dragon, rejoining the First Twenty (even though she is a D).
Kuma’s Ship

READER: “It’s cute that Kuma used the drawing of Bonney as his flag. Can you tell me what his ship’s name is?”
ODA: “It’s called the Leap Out Jewelry.”
It is sweet that on top of having a Jolly Roger based on his daughter’s drawing of him, showing what Kuma loves the most about being alive, he also names the ship after his own daughter too and his deepest prayer for her to be free, to “leap out”, which in a way is a nice hint towards her Distorted Future where, as Nika Bonney, she “leaps out” of the page with temporary godlike power.
King of the Bootlegs

READER: “Luffy’s eye pupils are quite small, aren’t they? What if he wore colored contacts? What would he look like?”
ODA: “Like this.
A normal drawing of Luffy (left): “I’ll become the King of the Pirates!”
A drawing of Luffy with colored contacts: “I’ll become the King of Pirated Copies!” (bootlegs)”
Cover Stories

READER: “This is my first submission! You know those cover story series that you do? My dad said that once a character appears in them, they’ll never appear in the story again! Is that true?”
ODA: “Eh? That’s not true at all! The cover series I’ve done so far include:
Buggy, Koby, Jango, Hatchan, Wapol, Ace, Gedatsu, Meet Baroque Works, Enel, CP9, Caribou, Jinbe, The Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Bege, Germa, Yamato
I’ve done this many times already. Most of these characters have returned in the main story. Basically, the cover story series are to show readers what these characters are up to. There’s also a book called “Doors”, which contains all of these and is very easy to read!
Mio-chan, are you perhaps curious if Yamato will appear again? Please look forward to it! (laughs)”
E-book vs Physical Formatting
READER: “Odacchi! These days, e-books have become mainstream and there are more web manga than ever, but I feel One Piece often uses wide panels that stretch across both pages, even outside of big splash scenes. Do you consciously design it to be read in print form?”
ODA: “Ah, right — both Jump and the One Piece volumes have digital versions now. Of course, everyone’s free to read however they like, but the layout I have in mind is always two pages as one spread (✕). In other words, the Jump magazine, comics, or digital versions read on something horizontal like a PC or iPad.”
“For example, when I do a gag that spans both pages, I sometimes draw the left page’s panels a bit smaller so that when you flip the page, the joke on the right appears bigger and hits harder. That’s one of the visual effects I use in my storytelling. So for people reading on a vertically oriented smartphone screen, I can only say “Sorry about that” (lol).”
Momonosuke’s Rule over Wano Explored

READER: “The Akazaya Nine (Nine Red Scabbards) have each become daimyö of their respective regions, but how were they chosen? Don’t tell me it was all Kin’emon’s decision?! As expected of Kin-san!!!”
ODA: “Yes. With the despised Kaido and Orochi gone, and with Oden no longer among them, his son Momonosuke has declared his rule over the nation of Wano Country! Beben!!! Although Momonosuke’s mind is still that of an eight-year-old, of course, it’s up to the Scabbards to support him!
Here’s how Wano looks now compared to before: Okobore Town, the Prisoner Mines, the Factories, and Onigashima, all of that is gone.
As revealed in the cover story, after much discussion among themselves, the Scabbards decided to spread out across the land as regional daimyos. The Flower Capital is overseen by Kin’emon (as the senior elder) and Nekomamushi (as the underworld’s boss), supporting Momonosuke. Yamato, meanwhile, is still currently learning about the world.”
– Flower Capital: Nekomamushi, Kin’emon, Momonosuke
– Kibi: Denjiro
– Kuri: Inuarashi
– Udon: Raizo
– Hakumai: Kawamatsu
– Ringo: Kikunojo
One Piece Calendar

READER: “Hello, Oda-san! In the One Piece world, there are two calendars — the “Age of Sea Circle” (Kaien-Reki) and the “Age of Heaven” (Ten-Reki). What time periods do each of these refer to? And what year is it currently?”
ODA: “Ah, I see. Casual readers have probably forgotten those even exist (laughs). You’re curious, huh? You’re thinking one of them must be the older calendar, right? The answer is: right now it’s year 4141 of the Age of Heaven, and year 1541 of the Age of the Sea Circle. Both are still in use.
By the way, on Skypiea, everything happened roughly 400 years ago, but I just rounded it nicely to “400 years.” You can forget about this information.”
Why York Wanted to be a Celestial Dragon

READER: “Hello, Oda! I was wondering — since York wants to become a Celestial Dragon, does that mean Vegapunk himself, before he split into satellites, also had at least a little desire to become one?”
ODA: “I see. Was this a shock? This is a difficult topic, but in my view, every person has big desires toward various things, and only when we have the “reason” to control those desires do we truly become “human.”
If we define reason as “righteousness” (read as Shaka), then things like hatred toward the Celestial Dragons or the moral sense that tells us “you must not kill people” also come from reason. But if that’s the case, then perhaps everyone has a little “Celestial Dragon” inside them too.
That’s my extreme theory. (Please take it lightly, lol.)
My answer is: “It’s possible that within humans exists the desire to become a Celestial Dragon.”
Scopper Gaban Finally Confirmed

READER: “For those who’ve been wondering, isn’t it about time we put an end to the mystery of the person seen from behind on the cover of Chapter 631? I’ll just say it, is it Golden Lion Shiki? Or perhaps the “Left Hand of the Pirate King,” Scopper Gaban?”
ODA: You’ve got a good memory! That is Gaban. He just can’t shake off his habit of traveling, he’s been wandering around quite a bit. He is a navigator, after all.
Fans may have noticed since the mystery resurfaced in Chapter 1125: ”
The Rosward Family

READER: “The Celestial Dragons — Saint Rosward, Saint Charlos, and Saint Shalria — what family are they from?”
ODA: “They’re from the Rosward family. Saint Rosward’s parents must be a bunch of idiots. Rosward’s full name is Rosward Rosward.“
After 17 years, we finally have the surname for Rosward’s family and it is…Rosward.
The patriarch is just named Rosward Rosward, which may sound silly but it would work for a family name to maintain an ancestral name, like how many French kings are named Louis.
So now we have 14 out of the 20 First Twenty families:
Nefeltari, Nerona, Doflamingo, Figarland, Shepherd, Marcus, Jaygarcia, Topman, Ethanbaron, Manmeyer, Rimushifu, Satchels, Bavette and Rosward.
And the Roswards were the very first known Celestial Dragon family, first introduced in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc in Chapter 497: “Adventure on the Archipelago of Dancing Soap Bubbles”, released in April 21, 2008.
Franky’s Father 100% Confirmed

READER: “Odacchi, heso! Are Franky and Queen father and son??”
ODA: “Eh…!!! (Oh no… they’ve noticed! They must’ve seen it in the One Piece Encyclopedia – Vivre Card that the year Queen’s child was born matches the year Franky was born! And the year Queen abandoned his child also matches the year Franky was taken in by Tom!! Readers knowing something the characters themselves don’t would be weird… Ill have to bluff my way out of this one…!) N… nyo they’re… nyot…!!!”
This was taken from the Vivre Card Encyclopedia last year, September 2024, when fans notices peculiar similarities in the timeline for Queen abandoning his child and Franky becoming an orphan
Gear 5’s White Color

READER: “I got so excited when Luffy’s new Gear 5 techniques, “Gomu Gomu no Dawn Whip” and “Dawn Rocket,” appeared! But when I see the word “White,” I’d naturally expect “Punch” — that would be even more exciting! So why is it read as “Dawn”?”
ODA: “Hold on a sec! Ramenmaru-kun?! (The guy who sent the previous question.) Even if you repelled one weirdo, did you just summon another one?! What do you mean “when it’s white, it has to be Punch”?!! PTA members, please, it’s not what it sounds like!! This isn’t that kind of manga!!
(Note: “White Punch” is a liquor mixture. Once again, Oda dodges the question, lol.)”
On a different note:
Some users note that the reason why Gear 5 is white is because the sun itself is technically white.
Also the kanji for white (白) is present in kuuhaku (空白) which is the term used in One Piece for the Void century (a bad adaptation, because kuuhaku actually means in blank, like a blank page).
This term has been used most frequently by Imu and the World Government, to “erase” as in to make things be like a blank page again.
But thematically, it works as a fitting irony, that Luffy’s whiteness, an “erasure” of the present world like Imu’s, is done to maximize one’s freedom, especially as such an erasure could “reverse” Imu’s dominion, on top of Luffy being able to make a rubber eraser and change the cartoon however he pleases.
Will Bonney Remain in Her True Child Form?

READER: “Bonney is only 12 years old, yet she keeps the appearance of someone in her 20s. Will she stay as a 12-year-old from now on?”
ODA: “Out at sea, no one would take a child captain seriously, and looking older was also convenient for her journey to find her father. But now that she’s on board the Sunny, which is now on Elbaph, she seems to feel safe enough to remain as a child. Please keep an eye on her from here on out.”
Could this be the hint to Bonney becoming a Straw Hat instead of Loki?
Both dream of freedom and leaving their homes for the sea but perhaps Bonney can do that with her restored father by themselves or maybe they could even be part of the alliance as Nika’s warriors of liberation.
But it could also be possible for Bonney to find herself safe, living in the dream of her father by being with the current Nika, Luffy.
