Editor’s Note: “Memories of the young boy..”
The cover shows a young Akemura letting go of a butterfly, surrounded by flowers.
All symbols of Magatsumi, symbols of death and transformation.
Similar to Kisho Arima’s final scene in Tokyo Ghoul: re, where he lets go of his burden in the form of letting the butterfly fly, representing a ripple effect as well as Kaneki becomes the One-Eyed King after the former’s death.
Editor’s Note: “The man who would come to be known as the “Sword Saint”….”
The chapter begins with a flashback of Chiaki checking up on Akemura, who is crying after being bullied by his cousins and having a bump from the encounter.
While one maid tells him to fight back, Chiaki says that Akemura is a kind soul and tells him it is okay for him to cry but in turn, she says that she will fight back in his place and Akemura gives his big sister a stick to defend herself, which she says she does not need.
We see a black pine tree kicked by a grieving Giyu.
Due to the loss of his older brother Hiroto, he has ascended as head of the Soga Clan.
Giyu expresses how in spite being equal to Yoshinojo, the second strongest in the clan, he was not chosen for the Irishima mission because he lacked potential.
However, he swears to carry out his brother’s legacy and awaits the day he awakens Kurotsuchi.
Meanwhile, in tears, Chiaki’s mother tells Akemura’s instructor to kill Giyu, not wanting to lose her daughter.
However, Akemura is way ahead of them as he angrily confronts Giyu, who tells Akemura not to undermine Chiaki’s resolve to protect Japan.
The bodyguards prepare to restrain Akemura but none could see it when Akemura sliced Giyu’s pipe in half and got close to the man.
Akemura said that if Hiroto were alive, he would find a way but Giyu counters, saying that his older brother’s way was to fight and die.
Chiaki comes to get her brother while the other swordsmen note Akemura’s fast growth in spite being only 16 years old and that this has turned him into a different person entirely, from a crying child to a sullen warrior akin to Hiroto himself and this is due to his protective obsession with his older sister.
Chiaki tells Akemura he has the makings of a great swordsmen so he should not cause trouble and to let her protect everyone by giving herself away.
However, Akemura mourns the fact that things remain the same, that even if he picked up the sword to protect Chiaki, Chiaki is still the one to stand up for him.
On the bullet train, Subaru remarks that Kunishige lacks experience to prove his proposal, as if anything it would only increase the likelihood of the Datenseki violently exploding and killing many people nearly.
However, Kunishige was too late, as the Enchanted Blade project was scrapped because Chiaki chose to hand herself over to ensure the Datenseki they have is still in their possession.
