THE SOURCE OF JUJUTSU REVEALED! Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 9 Spoilers!
Maru really did set off the entire Jujutsu Kaisen sequel. This entire flashback would give one Vinland Saga vibes, with the pursuit of peace and the horrific cost of war and differences.

In the previous Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo chapter, we learn of Cross and Maru’s backstory, how the Simurians are divided by races in conflict and the source of their impoverished situation.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 9 is titled, “Dura Val Bobbidi Mechika, Part 2”
This chapter has 20 pages, including the cover page.
Editor’s note “The situation seemed to be improving, but…”
A bit of a recap:
Cross and Maru were orphaned because the Simurian government or, perhaps, the government ruled by the Deskunte tribe, razed their village to the ground and their parents were crushed by the rubble of their home as a result of the attack.
As their father lay dying, he was clutching on a rock like it was the most precious thing in the world but Cross doubted its value.
They would later be raised by a miner like Dura, who wanted to build a canal and after much effort, it came true, bridging the Deskunte colonists with the Rumelian Tribe that were once isolated to the wastelands.
Those positive developments would be ruined by the Kalyan eating the daughter of the Deskunte chief.
Modulo’s Success
The color page features the eponymous character, Dura, and the two boys, Cross and Maru, who have essentially become his adopted sons.
We have been getting plenty of color pages as of late.
The first two chapters were expected but Chapter 7 and now Chapter 9 are products of the growing popularity of the Jujutsu Kaisen sequel.
The original series was able to net 100 million sales by the end of the series last year.
Perhaps by itself, the sequel will also be a success story, maybe even encourage Gege Akutami to extend the story for longer than the intended 3 volumes or 25 or so chapters.
At the end of the chapter, we also have six bonus illustrations.
Side by side, on the left we have the new generation consisting of Yuka (blue background), Maru (yellow), and Tsurugi (red) drawn by the artist Yuji Iwasaki, and their past counterparts from the main series: Yuta, Yuji and Maki respectively, drawn by the original author himself, Gege Akutami.
You can compare the two artstyles through this.
It is funny how Yuta and Maki have utterly replaced Megumi and Nobara respectively, which makes sense since both characters have been highlighted during the Culling Game Arc and Shinjuku Showdown as actual leads alongside Yuji.
The Origin of Cursed Energy
The chapter begins with Cross’ narration about the Simurian third eye, the source of Rororka, which is the Cursed Energy of the Simurians.
The only times Simurians other than us shed tears from their third eye are at birth and death.
The third eye puts a heavy load on the brain, which can lead to its downfall.
And among the tribes, the Rumelian, Cross’ tribe, are the only ones who cry from it when a Kalyan dies.
The black box of the human brain, the right prefrontal cortex, is where Jujutsu techniques are engraved in a Sorcerer’s brain.
Recall that humans produce cursed energy through streams of negative emotions, which leads to the creation of Cursed Spirits.
Tengen’s barrier limits the creation of said Spirit to Japan, as well as the existence of humans who can exorcise Curses, Sorcerers.
The right prefrontal cortex is a center for both memory and empathy, which ties well with the third eye.
The third eye is lodged and attached to the entire prefrontal cortex, which means that a Rumelian’s right prefrontal cortex is significantly more sensitive and is attuned to the fate of the Kalyan creatures.
Like the Uchiha of Naruto, their powerful eyes are fueled by so much love, which can breed hate.
As Gojo says, the greatest curse of all is love and as the chapter shows and Maki’s own words to Tsurugi show in Chapter 1, love and grief can breed much power.
But given what we will see, it is likely that Maru’s tribe were the first Simurians to have left for space and that Jujutsu was an evolution distinct for humans while the Simurians developed their own powers differently, which also explains why very few actually have powers at this point.
A Commentary on the False Attribution of Religion to War
The chapter properly begins with the Deskunte chief’s daughter discovered to be eaten by the Kalyan.
As a result of this, the chief demands 90% of Rumelian land, including the canal, to be seized as reparations for the Kalyan eating the princess.
The other Rumelian scream at their elder, angered at this false accusation levied against the tribe, and their fear that war is inevitable.
In Simuria, the strong rule over the land and the Rumelian are no exception but the Deskunte have grown more powerful and their tribe is ruled by the strong.
The Deskunte have challenged the Rumelian to a one-on-one duel for the tribe’s honor, with each tribe choosing their best warriors.
The winner will trample on their opponent and their kin until they obtain their goal while the loser must acknowledge the claim for the sake of peace.
One of the adult Rumelian explains that when Cross and Maru’s village was destroyed, the Deskunte also held a tournament, in which Dura emerged as the winner and it was a match set up to the Deskunte’s favor because their warchief was Dura’s opponent, yet in the end, Dura still won.
This made Dura the strongest Simurian but Dura reminds them that other stronger warriors did not participate in the tournament as well.
By this point, Cross now understands why Dura kept his past hidden from Cross and Maru.
The elder mentions that the Deskunte are quite cruel to the men who do not fulfill their warrior’s honor, so refusing is out of the question.
Cross offers to go, knowing that refusal is a death sentence for the Rumelian, but Dura decides, with much hesitation, to go instead.
On the day of the tournament, the Rumelian felt their whole bodies go numb
We now meet Dabura, who seems to be the warchief of the Deskunte,
Yep, that frightening aura is in effect here as it was in Chapter 2.
Maru panics, telling Cross that Dura should run away and that they are already grateful for everything Dura has done.
Dura makes conversation with his opponent, Dabura, and asks how his sister is doing.
Dura asks if Dabura is forced against his will to do this but then shifts his tone, saying that the outcome is settled anyway but asks him for a favor.
Dabura looks at Dura depressingly, asking what he should do since he is forced to keep fighting until Dura is dead.
Dura says they should keep talking for a bit since there are other tribes in the tournament besides the Rumelian and Deskunte.
Dura reveals the truth of the expulsion of the Rumelian Tribe 10 years ago, that while the wall between them lies in the religious belief regarding the Kalyan, the war did not happen because of the Kalyan.
If you recall, the Kalyan was a sacred beast that protected the Kalyan and killed those from the other tribes, hence why the majority called for the death of the Kalyan and treated the conflict between the two tribes as a religious war.
This was the justification for many conflicts against the Rumelians.
It was actually because the Deskunte were after an ore called “Mul”, which can be converted into more power.
This might be the sacred rock that Cross and Maru’s father held.
The reason their parents died was to protect a powerful resource that would eventually be used for more war.
This is becoming true to life, like how it was not because of religious differences that certain countries fight each other, whether it is the Crusades or the War on Terror or the Gaza genocide but instead they are invasions by more powerful nations to acquire resources.
The other Rumelians tell Dura to stop talking as he and the tribe would be put to further danger.
This is why Dura has been quiet about the truth behind the village’s destruction.
Once it is declared a religious war, other tribes will find it difficult to speak out.
Such a label will make them think, “There must be something we don’t know about,” and become reluctant to mediate or provide assistance to the target demographic.
This also sounds true to real life.
Zionism, the leading political ideology of Israel, and its Christian variants, have been used to paint Israel as a victim of religious importance that must be protected, such that any mention of the Palestinian plight or criticism against Israeli attacks and policies will be treated as “antisemitism”.
Dura tells the people that religion should be something that is rooted in daily life, a holy book, not a grand cultural ideology used to oppress other races.
Dura pleads to the Deskunte to respect the Rumelians and treat them as beings with dignity, and to also respect not a religion but their way of life that is connected to their religion.
Preach, Dura. Literally preach.
His final plea is for the Rumelians and Deskunte to become neighbors, to be friends.
The Deskunte chief insists that the match begin, much to the Rumelians’ anguish, especially the boys and Jabaloma, who covers his eyes, not bearing to watch another loved one go.
Maru angrily screams at the outcome but Cross holds him back.
Maru is angered that Dabura held back, not fighting with all his might and thus disrespected Dura, who died in this duel.
However, Dabura simply said that he did not want to lose face in this duel, to lose his honor.
Later on, Cross learned that Dura and Dabura were best friends.
Apparently, Dura was the only one who knew about Dabura’s abilities at the time, as Dabura hated to stand out.
Before Rumel was isolated due to the war 10 years ago, they fought and encouraged each other to grow stronger in spite of coming from different tribes.
Maru’s Pioneering Idea Started the Series
While Dura’s body is buried with flowers covering him and the man in the Simurian prayer position (two palms facing away from each other), the boys recall their memories of Dura’s teachings about being one’s neighbor.
Yet Cross now sees that this is no longer possible and we see the Kalyan’s body being buried alongside Dura.
The same creature that was blamed for worsening the conflict between the two tribes when its aim was just to protect its beloved people.
Cross and Maru meet with the adults, who all wonder how they will move everyone with the land becoming Deskunte’s territory the next day.
The remaining 10% of the land is still too dry, far from the river and they would not be able to prevent disease and it would not be enough space for the tribe.
The adults want to fight back or die trying, to shove the horns of the Deskunte up their rears.
For Jabaloma, a warrior’s job is not to kill and die but to protect the women and children.
Maru asks if the other tribes can help but the others say it is no use as tomorrow is the deadline.
Suddenly, Dabura arrives, revealing that Dura left something behind for the two boys.
Maru and Cross find the stone that Dura told them to set apart and not to touch back when they were making the canal.
As it turns out, there was a huge quantity of Mul that Dura saved up, which he hid all his life so that Deskunte would not find out and thus ensure the revival of the Rumelian people.
Maru and Cross recall how they asked Dura why he is making the canal.
Dura says that villages were made because of someone’s past ideals, which is what the canal is for Dura.
So that even after Dura dies, someone will continue his legacy and make something better out of the canal.
Maru sees the Mul rocks as Dura’s parting gift, the continuation of his legacy.
When the twins touch the Mul rocks, their third eye releases the twins’ Rororka.
Jabaloma sees that the rocks are not just Mul but a purer mineral.
Maru suggests that they leave the land to find a different place, a land of peace where their suffering tribe can finally thrive.
The adults think there is no other place in Simuria but Maru points up to the sky, suggesting tat they can find a different planet to settle.
Dabura promises to protect the Rumelian tribe in Dura’s name.
The chapter ends as the ore gathers to form a slab of Mul rock that floats with their Roroka
This slab is the mothership the Simurians arrive on.
It looks like the Rumelians are the first Simurians to leave space.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 10 will be released on November 10, 2025.
