Special Martial Law Begins! Kurapika LOCKED DOWN! Hunter x Hunter Chapter 415 Spoilers!

In the previous Hunter x Hunter chapter, Gon and Killua make their first appearance in the manga after 12 years and over 70 chapters.

Hunter x Hunter Chapter 415 is titled, “Authenticity”

This chapter has 19 pages.

“(1st Prince’s bodyguard) Furykov activating his ability…!!”

The chapter begins with a flashback two months before the Black Whale left, meaning one month and two weeks ago.

We see Furykov producing a laptop with Nen. 

This seems to be part of his Combo Master (Fullmetal Alchemist) Hatsu since his Hatsu revealed in Chapter 413 where he analyzes an ability and produces gear for it.

And it seems that Furykov is analyzing his own body.

Icon showing a manor-like house, likely representing his body, with a warning sign (!).

This indicates he has been attacked.

Laptop Screen Menu shows:

“Please select” 

“Attack tool” (Sword icon) 

“Defense tool” (Shield icon)

“Other tool !” (Vase icon) 

Then Furykov clicks “It’s a curse!” 

And he sees a button for “Tool to dispel the curse” 

Screen displays: “Concerned Nen users” with a silhouette “?”

Furykov notes that someone has cursed him and one other person at the exact same time.

Furykov immediately realizes this has something to do with the Succession War

The warning icon is shown whenever he is attacked by a progressive manipulation attack or a latent Nen attack like curses or illnesses.

This was not there in the morning but was activated sometime during the day.

Furykov realizes that today was the day for the Seed Urn Ceremony, meaning the other person cursed with him is a Kakin Prince.

Furykov theorizes that since Nen is used in the Succession War, it is not impossible for Nen Limitations to extend to attendants but the issue with this theory is that all the Princes and their attendants would have been listed by Combo Master.

And since this involves the Seed Urn Ceremony, only a few people could do this.

The other party is hidden due to Concealment Nen and he has a good idea who is responsible for casting the Curse.

Furykov calls someone to connect him to Beyond Netero, who has his lounge room and is in his underwear right now.

Furykov immediately tells Beyond Netero that he is the one who cursed him and Beyond is impressed that Furykov was even able to figure it out.

Beyond explains that the curse is a “charm” for Kakin’s prosperity to ensure the Succession War happens without incident and to guide the next successor.

Beyond also says that this curse is towards Benjamin’s benefit.

Furykov is unsure and warns him that Combo Master can detect lies, with Beyond saying there was no need to call him if so.

Beyond goes on to explain the type of Curse he has: a Curse that activates upon death and the vessel’s Post Mortem Nen is used to use a chosen Prince to death.

The Curse will not cause any harm prior to its activation.

The target Prince performing the Seed Urn Ceremony was the trigger.

And Beyond is fully aware of Prince Benjamin’s Nen ability, Benjamin Baton and that this curse will kill two birds with one stone, almost like Beyond considered for such a possibility.

Beyond says that if Furkov dies, he can take down another Prince and give Benjamin his Combo Master.

Furykov realizes that Beyond’s goal is to let Benjamin win to maintain the current regime and secure the trip to the New Continent.

The trip requires long-term support, so Benjamin was the ideal candidate.

He wants to curry favor with the future King to use Kakin’s colonies as a base of operations.

This sounds like a hint towards Benjamin being his son but it could also be an elaborate misdirect and red herring on Togashi’s part.

Beyond says he will not reveal the target Prince and if Furykov plans to do so, he would have to go through Nasubi, the reigning Kakin King, since Beyond is currently a top VIP and in any event, the King will not let Furykov take Beyond as the latter is helping Nasubi ensure the Succession War goes without a hitch.

This implies that Nasubi knows about the Curse as well and may as well have included that in the Succession War plans as a means to force the Princes to kill each other.

Furykov hurriedly prepares to analyze the Curse, intending to stay as part of Beyond’s security detail and stay near him for a few hours to a few days in order to create the Curse-removing agent.

But then Furykov arrives at an answer when the laptop reveals…

That the curse will require 365 days or a full year to be analyzed while the time to make the antidote will be 700 days or nearly 2 years more, meaning a total of 3 years time will be wasted.

Furykov sees this as a countermeasure against Nen Exorcism, which his Combo Master sort of becomes.

Beyond notices that Furykov is quiet and was correct that Furkov was figuring out the curse.

Beyond reveals that he had put the Curse in Furykov at the moment of his birth over 20 years ago, meaning Furykov is at least 20 years old.

The Curse has been building up strength inside his body, so it will not be easy to destroy.

But such a powerful curse would need a target to match its strength, ergo a Nen user and wonders if the target is his own Prince Benjamin.

However, Beyond avoids giving any hints and says that the Seed Urn Ceremony will produce Guardian Spirit Beasts, so it does not matter how strong the Prince target was previously as the Curses he placed were equally strong.

Beyond says that he knows Furykov will not buy any explanation and Furykov says that really is the case since Beyond sees everyone around him as pawns.

Furykov mentally remarks that the explanation is a mix of truth and lies, the usual manipulation tactic.

Beyond mocks Furykov, saying that he is a soldier of the closest heir and asks if he resents being Benjamin’s pawn.

However, Furykov gets angry, saying that Benjamin is the opposite of Beyond, who is tainted by his selfish greed and that Benjamin instead sees himself and his soldiers as equals, as leaves of the Great Tree of Kakin.

Beyond says that since he respects Benjamin and also Furykov’s resolve, he will overlook the insult and tells Furykov the sole path to secure the Guardian Spirit Beast’s power is to kill the other Princes before arriving at the New Continent.

We also get a nice bit of confirmation that unlike nearly every other Upper Prince, Benjamin and his soldiers did not participate in the Carne Vare, the disgusting sex parties that are part of royal tradition and Beyond praises Benjamin for this.

Benjamin feels like Hunter x Hunter’s Stannis Baratheon, a man who is seen as a brute but is fully devoted to his extreme patriotism.

His men love him because they have a deep, personal connection and a promise to live on through Benjamin Baton.

Benjamin himself has a strong code of honor and unlike Tserriednich, is not overbearingly cruel, as he displayed some level of positive humanity and even a tiny bit of pity towards Fugetsu’s cursed state and even dispelled the low-level curses around her in Chapter 402: “Letter”.

Most of all, like Chrollo, Benjamin, at least from Furykov’s perspective, views himself and all his men as equals, as mere leaves to the Great Tree of Kakin.

For Benjamin, becoming a guardian deity is not all about personal power but a fulfillment of his country’s destiny and thus a sacred duty.

Beyond ends this conversation, saying that he knows he will reveal more details, so this will be the last time the two of them will talk.

Worried about who his target is, Furykov checks again and confirms the Curse came when the first eight Princes took part in the Seed Urn Ceremony.

Furykov wonders if Benjamin is not his target, then it could be 2nd Prince Camilla, a Nen user who the faction considers the biggest threat to the current regime other than the 9th Prince Halkenburg.

The flashback ends before we even get a concrete answer but it is clear his target is Benjamin.

At 1:50 p.m, Day 12 of the voyage, Kurapika, Shimanu, and Oito gather in Room 1014’s master bedroom. Oito tells Kurapika about a “general store dealer”, a delivery service which could be used to deliver items to and from the mainland. She estimates that a letter sent immediately could get to her sister in three to five days and a reply reach them within a week. Oito takes a postcard out of a safe and shows it to Kurapika, who inspects it for anything that would stand out. Oito says that it was the normal letter she used when they were safe, and that she would use the Yamato languages’s multiple script system to send a coded message and hide behind any suspicion of such with a claim of not being fluent. Kurapika reminds her to take more caution with the wording, given the possibility that the military could decipher the code. He advises her to avoid using the names of specific people and locations, and to pick a location far from home that could be identified with a keyword.

As Oito begins drafting her message, Kurapika delibrates on the risks involved with their plan, the chance that the text is physically damaged, or that Oito’s sister would not accurately understand the message and react properly. He considers the worst case scenario, that the military discovered their plan and confirmed that Prince Woble is not participating in the contest, risking Woble’s capture and the deaths of Oito and her relatives. He weighs the probabilities, including that Oito’s sister would trust two boys who appeared out of nowhere, and speaks of the matter to Oito. Oito is surprised to hear what Kurapika says to her, and her face falls slightly.

Kurapika steps into Room 1014’s living room, and informs Babimyna that Queen Oito had requested to use the dealer service. He asks Babimyna to inspect eight postcards for him, and hands them over. Babimyna tells him that the military no longer did inspections, and that although customs law meant that the letters had to pass through them, he would just hand the letters over to the dealer as is. As Babimyna uses the phone, Kurapika makes a mental note that the military stil had control over the Yorozuya distribution network, and then a Yorozuya deliveryman arrives shortly after to take the letters for him.

Sirens blast across the Black Whale as speakers broadcast that Special Martial Law had been declared. Soldiers rush the lower tiers and begin managing the passengers. In 2nd Prince Camilla’s living quarters in the VVIP room, she calls for the speaker announcing Special Martial Law to be turned off, without pausing her massage. In Room 1003, Coventoba speaks with two of 3rd Prince Zhang Lei’s men in panic, wondering if possessing Zhang Lei’s coin had caused the situation he was in. In Room 1004, Salkov continues watching over 4th Prince Tserriednich as he continues his Zetsu training, not even reacting to the sirens and the announcement. He observes Tserriednich’s lack of reaction, and wonders if he was okay with continuing despite the situation.

In Room 1005, Rihan shouts orders to the guards and employees present. He instructs them to stand by until further orders were given, and informs them that 5th Prince Tubeppa was to evacuate to Room 1001 with the guards. Heisen smirks at the situation, making a joke to Komiya about their situation, but Rihan touches a gun to the back of his head, and threatens to consider his behavior “suspicious”. Tubeppa tells him not to point his gun at the scientists, pointing out that they were irreplacable personnel for essential scientific research at their destination, but Rihan says that they were in a crisis that threatened to overthrow the nation and there were concerns about a faction aiming to use the succession contest as a cover to bring about its annihilation. He allows Heisen to return to Tubeppa’s side, and informs Tubeppa that they would observe a temporary ceasefire until measures could be placed to allow for the threat to be investigated. He then asks her to head to Room 1001 promptly, where she would be briefed, but informs her of the possibility that the situation did not resolve, which would require the Princes to all live together in Room 1001. Tubeppa discerns that either something had happened to Benjamin, or that this was his plan to eliminate the higher ranking Princes, and wonders if she was included among them. As she leaves, she clarifies that her guards would be allowed to follow her to Room 1001, but Rihan says that only guards belonging to the Royal Army would be allowed to accompany her. Before she leaves, she wonders why Benjamin would want to speak with them alone, and instructs Heisen and Komiya to run tests on the samples for the moment. As Rihan observes Tubeppa, he notes that her Guardian Spirit Beast had yet to move, and considers his hypothesis that it was because Kurapika was not next to her more plausible.

From Room 1006, 6th Prince Tyson is seen skipping merrily along the hallways, escorted by her guards and Orau. Room 1007 scrambles in a panic, realizing that 7th Prince Luzurus had gone missing, as well as Rice. Satobi suggests that he was with the mafia boss, and calls for him to be contacted immediately. Basho asks Ridge what he had last discussed with the Prince, and Ridge shares his orders to stall Kanjidol. He reveals that Kanjidol had already killed Luzurus’ guards in the break room by the time he got there, even before Special Martial Law had been declared. Nearby, Kanjidol sits bound and bruised, smirking at the situation and aware that the details of the situation could be fudged in his favor. From Room 1011, soldiers escort 6th Queen Seiko to the VVIP living quarters, informing her that the rooms of absent Princes would be sealed off until Special Martial Law is lifted. As she complies, she gives instructions that 11th Prince Fugetsu not be allowed to leave the Ministry of Justice no matter what happens, and for no one to be let inside once Room 1011 is sealed off.

In Room 1013, fifteen minutes before Special Martial Law is declared, Saquelle acknowledges orders given to him through his radioset. Biscuit notices the change in his aura, and begins to suspect that martial law is about to be declared. She quickly realizes that the would either have to powerlessly follow orders and wait for martial law to be lifted, or neutralize Saquelle and hole up with the expectation of being eventually charged with treason. She quickly decides that leaving their Nen space was not an option, since only the powerless guards of 7th Queen Sevanti could accompany 13th Prince Marayam, and could likely not come back since the power involved in creating a Nen space like theirs likely was a one-time-use ability, risking Marayam’s Guardian Spirit Beast resetting, lying dormant, or even disappearing. Deciding that they need to remain holed up, Biscuit calls Vergei over to speak with him.

In Room 1014, twenty minutes after the declaration of Special Martial Law, Babimyna informs Oito and Kurapika that Prince Benjamin had granted clemency, deciding that the stand-in Prince could not be legally held responsible and so his charges had been dropped. He informs Oito that she was subject to detention, but until the whereabouts of the real Prince Woble were discovered, her indictment would also be deferred in consideration of her status as prospective queen mother to the next king. As Oito acknowledges Babimyna’s warning to not leave the master bedroom on risk of being charged with fleeing custody, Kurapika contemplates their situation. He notes that they were wary of the possibility that Woble was on board, as expected, but decides that they had another reason for declaring Special Martial Law, having acted far too hastily and impulsively to the new revelations from his side.
