Author of the Vinland Saga manga Makoto Yukimura made his Canadian debut as an honored guest at the Toronto International Festival of Authors and at the “The Pursuit of Purpose: Charting Vinland with YUKIMURA Makoto” event hosted by The Japan Foundation in September of last year.

Makoto Yukimura took part in a conversation there with Miles Baker, the Toronto Comic Art Festival’s managing director.

The two talked about Vinland Saga in-depth, Yukimura also talked about the ending of the manga series.

He explained that so far, he doesn’t have an ending in mind as there are many factors to consider. Yukimura further elaborates that he has to take the historical events into account, while also delivering a satisfying ending that isn’t too tragic.

Hence, he hasn’t been able to form the ending just yet.

“I actually don’t know what is going to happen at the end of this story! I believe that when the story comes to an end, everybody’s hope is to have a happy ending, but there are historical facts.

That’s the part that’s really difficult for me right now.

According to history, the ending of Thorfinn’s story is going to be tragic.

Something really tragic is going to happen to the characters.

“How could I make this not a complete tragedy?” That is something that I’m working on right now. What should I do?”

Baker commented that since it’s fiction, it should be possible to give Thorfinn a happy ending.

Makoto Yukimura replied that he would do his best to move the story in that direction.

About Vinland Saga:

Vinland Saga Season 2 premiered on January 9, 2023, in Japan, and is now available for streaming on platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll outside of Japan.

The second season has 24 episodes, and although the animation studio responsible for its production changed from WIT to MAPPA, the team working on the anime remains the same as in Season 1.

Crunchyroll describes the series as:

“Around the end of the millennium, Viking, the mightiest but atrocious tribe, had been out breaking everywhere.

Thorfinn, the son of the greatest warrior, lived his childhood in the battlefield. He was seeking the land of reverie called Vinland. This is the story of a true warrior in an age of turmoil.”
