Vinland Saga author Makoto Yukimura relayed some unfortunate news to his fans, who were eagerly waiting for the latest chapter.

On Dec 20, 2023, he announced through his Twitter handle that the release of Chapter 208 would be delayed to January 2024 due to a sudden illness contracted by the author and his family.

He further explains that the illness is not, thankfully, anything serious like corona or influenza but seems to be like a severe case of cold. Yukimura elaborates by saying that his eldest son’s body temperature went up to 39 degrees Celsius and thought, “that’s ridiculous!”

The chapter was supposed to come on December 25th but it has been suddenly cancelled. Yukimura apologized to fans, now that they have to wait 2 months to hear the rest of Cordelia’s story.

The full translation of Yukimura’s exact words is as follows:

“Hello to all Vinland Saga readers!

I’m very sorry, but the latest chapter of Vinland Saga was due to be published in the Monthly Afternoon on the 25th of this month, but it has suddenly been cancelled. I am truly sorry about this, but I and my family were suddenly taken ill.

The tests showed that it was neither corona nor flu, and the doctor said it was a cold. My eldest son, for example, had a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. When I heard the diagnosis, I thought, “That’s ridiculous,” but, well, it was a cold.

We are all fine now. I really have to take care of my health… I’m sorry for the inconvenience.

Even though Cordelia (Thorkell’s daughter) is in a very difficult situation, we will have to wait two months to hear the rest of her story. I’m sorry. I’ll be careful.

Everyone, please be careful not to get sick. So gargle and wash your hands.”

About Vinland Saga:

Vinland Saga is a Japanese historical manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura. The series is published by Kodansha, and was first serialized in the boys-targeted manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine before moving to the monthly manga magazine Monthly Afternoon, aimed at young adult men. Vinland Saga Season 2 premiered on January 9, 2023, in Japan, and is now available for streaming on platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll outside of Japan.

The second season has 24 episodes, and although the animation studio responsible for its production changed from WIT to MAPPA, the team working on the anime remains the same as in Season 1.

Kodansha describes the overall plot of Vinland Saga as follows:

As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band’s leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father.

Sustaining Thorfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery… the land Leif called Vinland.
