The Akira anime movie was released in July of 1988 and rose to critical acclaim. The movie won the Silver Scream Award, an audience award from the Amsterdam-based Imagine Film Festival in 1992.

Akira was nominated for the American Anime Awards’ Best Anime Feature award in 2007 as well.

Here’s how Funi/Crunchi describes Akira:

In the future, Shotaro Kaneda and his motorcycle gang tear through Neo Tokyo, a city divided by growing tensions. But when caught in an accident, Kaneda’s friend Tetsuo Shima discovers a secret government project and receives psychic abilities beyond his control.
