On February 23, 2026, it was announced that a new Neon Genesis Evangelion series is in the works.

This will be written by Yoko Taro, president and CEO of Bukkoro and the creator of the NieR:Automata games.

In an IGN interview alongside “Stellar Blade” developer Hyung-Tae Kim, Taro has noted that Evangelion was an inspiration behind his games, such as NieR: Automata and Drakengard.

The TV series will be a collaboration between Studio Khara, founded by Eva’s creator, Hideaki Anno, and CloverWorks (Spy x Family), both of which are successor studios of Gainax, which has fully shut down last year.

In time for its 30th anniversary, on February 21, Studio Khara hosted the 30th Anniversary Festival where a new “Evangelion” short film is shown.

There are no further details on the new series, including a release date, so this is mostly in the conceptual stage.

A key question fans might ask is where this would fit in the original series or in the Rebuilds, the latter being produced by Khara and is an updated take on Evangelion by Anno himself.

About Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion began as a 26-episode television series created by Hideako Anno and produced by Gainax (Gurren Lagann) from October 4, 1995 to March 27, 1996.

With its ending facing much backlash, Evangelion would return via theatrical release through the 1997 film, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, that released on March 15 and features a 25-minute preview of the actual ending, The End of Evangelion on July 19 of the same year.

The two releases were together in March 8, 1998 as a compilation film called Revival of Evangelion.

The story would later be retold in the form of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, beginning with the  2007 film, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone.

Following it up is the 2009 film, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, the 2012 film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, and concluding with the long-awaited 2021 film, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

Neon Genesis Evangelion tells the story of Shinji Ikari, who joins the organization NERV, headed by his cruel father, Gendo, where he and other select youths pilot the Eva Units to fight the mysterious Angels threatening humanity.
