On January 22, 2026, the Netflix movie Cosmic Princess Kaguya premiered and is a reimagining of the folktale “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”.

In honor of its debut, big manga artists welcome the film with tribute illustrations, such as Naruto’s Masashi Kishimoto, Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gege Akutami and Chainsaw Man’s Tatsuki Fujimoto.

About the Film

Cosmic Princess Kaguya is an anime-original film produced by Studio Colorido (Burn the Witch, Pokémon: Twilight Wings) and Studio Chromato directed by Shingo Yamashita in his movie directoral debut.

Colorido is an animation subsidiary of Twin Engine, which has produced anime such as Vinland Saga and Hell’s Paradise.

Meanwhile, Chromato is a company founded by Shingo Yamashita himself on March 1, 2024, which has produced the movie and its novel adaptation and is taking part in animating Episode 4 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3

Yamashita is most famous for directing iconic opening and ending sequences such as Naruto Shippuden Opening 13: “Not Even Sudden Rain Can Defeat Me” by NICO Touches the Wall, both Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 openings, “Kaikai Kitan” by EVE and “Vivid Vice” by Who-ya Extended, Chainsaw Man Opening 1: “Kick Back” and the (in)famous animation of Naruto Shippuden Episode 167, which has recently gotten praise due to its fluidity rather than the off-model drawings of the character Pain.

Yamashita’s catalog of work is a marvel in digital animation, being among the early “web gen” animators, whose style is characterized by its fludiity, such that it treats anime characters less like human beings and more like motions themselves, hence why he makes some characters off-model in the name of animation.

He uses several techniques such as rotoscoping and previsualization and pays attention to detail in backgrounds and an emphasis on lakes and city scenery.

Prior to directing the film, Yamashita directed the web short anime series, Pokémon: Twilight Wings, which only had 8 episodes, each 5-9 minutes long.

Music is produced by Vocaloid Producers: ryo (supercell), kz(livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra and yuigot.
