However, Akutami-sensei did not top the list when it comes to overall revenue. That title goes to the late Kentaro Miura, author of Berserk.

Twitter’s manga data miner, @RoukHein, revealed the top 9 best-selling manga authors of 2023 in the United Kingdom and it looks like Gege Akutami, author of Jujutsu Kaisen, topped the list with the most units sold in the year.

Jujutsu Kaisen became pretty popular in 2023 with the return of the anime for Season 2 and the Shibuya Incident arc. And, as we all know, the success of the anime boosts the sales of its manga, and that was truly the case for Gege Akutami and Jujutsu Kaisen.

Coming second is Tatsuki Fujimoto, author of Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man manga performed really well in the US and it seems to be the case in the UK as well. Even though there wasn’t any anime airing in 2023, Season 1’s boost lasted quite a while and Part 2 of the manga took off pretty well, with the momentum felt even in 2024!

Without further ado, here’s the top 9 best selling manga authors of 2023 in the United Kingdom in terms of number of units sold!

  1. Gege Akutami [Jujutsu Kaisen] – 121,520 units
  2. Tatsuki Fujimoto [Chainsaw Man, etc] – 116,091 units
  3. Koyoharu Gotouge [Demon Slayer] – 111,314 units
  4. Eiichiro Oda [One Piece] – 91,923 units
  5. Kohei Horikoshi [My Hero Academia] – 91,418 units
  6. Kentaro Miura [Berserk] – 78,045 units
  7. Akira Toriyama [Dragon Ball] – 68,974 units
  8. Junji Ito – 59,827 units
  9. Tatsuya Endo [Spy x Family] – 54,504 units

However, Akutami-sensei did not top the list when it comes to overall revenue. That title goes to the late Kentaro Miura, author of Berserk.

With that said, here’s the top 9 best selling manga authors of 2023 in the United Kingdom in terms of revenue!

  1. Kentaro Miura [Berserk] – £2,189,270
  2. Koyoharu Gotouge [Demon Slayer] – £1,249,009
  3. Eiichiro Oda [One Piece] – £1,133,000
  4. Junji Ito – £1,088,552
  5. Tatsuki Fujimoto [Chainsaw Man, etc] – £1,032,593
  6. Gege Akutami [Jujutsu Kaisen] – £904,815
  7. Kohei Horikoshi [My Hero Academia] – £767,744
  8. Akira Toriyama [Dragon Ball] – £690,265
  9. Tatsuya Endo [Spy x Family] – £420,647

Once glance at this list is enough to tell you that the price per unit isn’t equal and it obviously isn’t. A single unit of Berserk isn’t equal to a single unit of Jujutsu Kaisen. However, each mangaka here deserves to be in this spot for their hardwork.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami.

It has been serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine, Weekly Shōnen Jump, since March 2018, with its chapters collected and published in 26 tankōbon volumes as of April 2024.

Crunchyroll describes the overall plot of Jujutsu Kaisen as:

Yuji Itadori is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life.

One day, to save a classmate who has been attacked by curses, he eats the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, taking the curse into his own soul.

From then on, he shares one body with Ryomen Sukuna.

Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Satoru Gojo, Itadori is admitted to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses… and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a curse to exorcise a curse, a life from which he could never turn back.
