JJK Animator Clarifies On Sukuna Vs Mahoraga Fight Being Only 30% Complete

What he actually meant was that they’ve only managed to finish 30% of the animator’s vision of the episode and NOT 30% of the ENTIRE EPISODE.

There are times when anime fans unintendedly misunderstand or mistake a mangaka’s or an animator’s words to come to an incorrect conclusion and unfortunately, this is one of those.

A freelance animator named RocciaNobili, who worked on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 episode 17 (which featured Sukuna vs Mahoraga) as an animation director, posted on Twitter, on Nov 17, 2023, that “the episode is not finished,” further stating that only 30% of the intended vision was achieved due to time constraints.

However, some fans took this number literally, thinking that the episode is ACTUALLY incomplete and the animators just didn’t finish the rest of the 70%.

To clear up the misconception, RocciaNobili deleted that post and said that fans focused on dumb numbers instead of what actually mattered. He further states that what he actually meant was that they’ve only managed to finish 30% of the animator’s vision of the episode and NOT 30% of the ENTIRE EPISODE.

If that were taken literally, that would mean we would literally see incomplete storyboards and white screens, which we obviously did not.

Despite this, fans absolutely adored the episode and praised him and the other animators for a job well done.

About Jujutsu Kaisen:

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018, with its chapters collected and published in 24 tankōbon volumes as of October 2023.

Studio MAPPA brought the world of JJK into anime by airing 24 episodes of season 1 from October 2020 to March 2021 and a 2nd season, that premiered in July 2023.

Crunchyroll describes the overall plot of Jujutsu Kaisen as:

Yuji Itadori is a boy with tremendous physical strength, though he lives a completely ordinary high school life. One day, to save a classmate who has been attacked by curses, he eats the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, taking the curse into his own soul. From then on, he shares one body with Ryomen Sukuna.

Guided by the most powerful of sorcerers, Satoru Gojo, Itadori is admitted to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an organization that fights the curses… and thus begins the heroic tale of a boy who became a curse to exorcise a curse, a life from which he could never turn back.
