As another year of anime comes to a close, X (formerly known as Twitter) announced the results of their annually held #XTrendAward and it looks like certain anime shows or music groups who have performed in popular anime have been awarded in 4 distinct categories!

This award, however, is restricted to those living in Japan. Basically, it’s a trend list for Twitter in Japan.

The selection criteria were the “number of posts” and “number of trend-ins” for all trending words, excluding “topics offensive to public order and morals,” “annual topics (e.g., “New Year’s greeting”),” “topics about deceased persons,” “topics secured by advertising,” “excessive repetition by some fans such as celebrity reply campaigns,” and “topics secured by excessive repetition by some fans” unless they are historical events that need special mention.

First up, we got the top 20 most frequently posted trending words or hashtags on Twitter. Amongst the entries in the list, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Frieren and Oshi No Ko have been included!

Here’s the entire list of the top 20 most trending words on Twitter (Japan edition):

Next, we have the anime category, where Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and Jujutsu Kaisen were the top two choices. Here’s the list of Twitter’s Top 5 trending series in anime (Japan edition):

  1. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury
  2. Jujutsu Kaisen
  3. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
  4. Attack on Titan
  5. Oshi No Ko

Looking at the manga category, surprisingly, none of the well-known manga amongst the western fandom are listed. However, Eyeshield 21, penned by One Punch Man artist Yusuke Murata, is included in the list. With that said, here’s the list of Twitter’s top 5 trending series in manga (Japan edition):

  1. Chiikawa
  2. Hyperinflation
  3. Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu (The Dangers in My Heart)
  4. Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous)
  5. Eyeshield 21

Finally, we come to the Discovery category, Twitter’s 10 popular words that weren’t the TOP word but were popular on the platform among those posted in Japan this year. And YOASOBI and Idol (Oshi No Ko’s opening theme song) topped this list by a huge margin!

The #Twitter Trend Award, a special project that looks back on the year’s trends and has been popular throughout Japan, will be rebranded to “#XTrendAward” and powered up.

The trending words that will be the talk of the town in 2023 will be selected based on a comprehensive combination of data-driven aggregation and the volume of posts throughout the year, and announced as the “#XTrendAward”.
