Gundam Franchise Records It Highest Revenue In The 2023 Fiscal Year!

On Wednesday, Bandai Namco Holdings announced its 2023 Fiscal Year (FY) sales. The records show record-breaking revenues for Gundam IP group-wide IP sales amounting to 131.3 billion Yen (approx. US$967 million) in FY 2023.

Last year, the franchise made 101.7 billion Yen (approx. US$749 million).

Masaru Kawaguchi, president of Bandai Namco Holdings, singled out The Witch From Mercury in a March newsletter for gaining new admirers among young people and women.

He also highlighted the Gundam AerialGunpla models as strong sellers.

Bandai Namco Holdings has been publishing its financial reports since FY2006. And, it has been inconsistent during certain years.

Most notably, the sales for Gundam dropped in FY2009-FY2010, FY2015, and in FY2017-2018.

Still, the franchise has made steady growth since FY2020. During the pandemic, the sales of Gunpla models increased significantly.

This is backed by numbers, with 60.5 billion yen (US$45 million) of Gundam‘s 131.3 billion yen in sales in FY2023 coming through the toys and hobby business.

This is up from 44.2 billion yen (US$33 million) in the last financial year.

Other Bandai Namco IPs that saw growth are as follows:

  • Dragon Ball: 144.5 billion yen (US$1 billion)—up from last year’s 127.6 billion (US$940 million).
  • One Piece: 86.3 billion yen ($636 million)-up from last year’s 44.1 billion (US$32 million).

The company’s net sales saw a 111.3% sales increase from the last financial year, with the sector witnessing a 103.5% gross profit.
