Bonus clips that were not included during the television airing of the show will also be included in the film.

The compilation film will cover episodes from 257 to 261 of the anime.

Similarly, the Baragaki arc, which was the first compilation film of the Gintama on Theater 2D series , also had a limited three-week run in Japan on November 10, 2023.

Both films are part of the Gintama franchise’s 20th anniversary celebration. 2023 marked the 20th anniversary of the debut of the Gintama manga created by Hideaki Sorachi.

Furthermore, 2026 will be the 20th anniversary of the anime’s premiere.

The Yorinuki Gintama-san rerun of the TV anime also inspired “on Theater 2D” compilations in 2012 and 2013.

About Gintama:

Gintama is a manga series written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi. It was serialized in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2003 to September 2018, later in Jump Giga from December 2018 to February 2019, and finished on the Gintama app, where it ran from May to June 2019. Its chapters were collected in 77 tankōbon volumes.

Studio Sunrise converted the series into an original video animation (OVA), which premiered at the Jump Festa 2006 Anime Tour in 2005. This was followed by a complete 367-episode anime television series, which premiered in April 2006 and ended in October 2018.

Three animated films have been created. The first film premiered in April 2010. The second film premiered in July 2013. The third and last film premiered in January 2021.

Crunchyroll describes the overall plot of Gintama as follows:

In a world where aliens have invaded Edo Period Japan, skyscrapers, trains and motor bikes have replaced the simple life of Earth inhabitants. One man however, still carries the soul of a samurai, Gintoki Sakata, otherwise known as Yorozuya Gin-san. As reckless as he is, Gintoki carries his own resolve and is ready to take on any challenge with his fellow companions.
