Disney Japan Is Outsourcing Its Home Video Production And Sales Now!

Happinet revealed on May 13 that Happinet Media Marketing, a subsidiary of Happinet, and Walt Disney’s Japanese arm have inked a home entertainment license agreement for the production and sale of Disney-branded Blu-ray Discs and DVDs in Japan, with an October 1st start date.

Since 1996, Disney has been in charge of Studio Ghibli home video distribution in Japan. (GKIDS now distributes Ghibli movies on home video through Shout!

Factory in the US, and Wild Bunch, which is now Goodfellas, now distributes Ghibli movies on home video in France.) Marvel, Pixar animation, and Disney itself are among the big blockbusters from Disney’s collection.

In February, Disney USA declared that it will be contracting the Sony Group to handle its home video business in the US and Canada.

Under license from Disney, Sony Entertainment will going forward promote, market, and distribute new releases as well as library films in the US and Canada.

Then, in March, Happinet Media Marketing and Sony Pictures Entertainment in Japan revealed that they had inked a comprehensive home video partnership.

With effect from May 1, Happinet is now producing and selling home video releases for all works in Japan that are owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
