After a year-long wait since the release of the first teaser, Chainsaw Man’s first ever movie gets an update.

During Jump Festa 2024 on December 22, 2024, Chainsaw Man would finally release the trailer for the Reze Arc movie that is set for release in 2025.

The trailer shows Reze, voiced by Reina Ueda, on a date with Denji, asking him if he prefers the town mouse or the country mouse, which is based on one of Aesop’s fables which talks about a proud town mouse bragging about his fine life to a content, simple country mouse.

We also see that Denji is on a theater date with Makima and their closeness prompts him to cheer outside the cinema.

However, Denji would realize that Reze is after and realizes that every girl who has been close to him only want to kill him (Power being the first case), showing off some spectacular action scenes, including Chainsaw Man’s fight with the Bomb Girl and the destruction of an entire building throughout the encounter.

We also see glimpses of Aki and the Angel Devil working together, and Denji riding on Beam the Shark Fiend to end the trailer on a manic note.

Alongside the trailer, we see two key visuals. The first key visual shows Chainsaw Man in the splatter style of the colored manga.

The second poster features Reze and Denji on their date, the lighting of the scene saturating them in their distinct colors, with Reze’s purple and Denji’s yellow.

These show the two sides of Chainsaw Man: the zany and the mundane.

Studio MAPPA (Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Jujutsu Kaisen) continues its run with the Chainsaw Man series by producing its first-ever movie outing.

Toho Animations (Jujutsu Kaisen 0, My Hero Academia franchise) acts as distributor.

Most of the Season 1 staff return to produce the movie.

Noticeably, the movie director will not be Ryu Nakayama, who has faced controversy over the stylistic choices of the anime, particularly from the vocal Japanese audience.

Replacing him is Season 1’s action director Tatsuya Yoshihara, who is notable for storyboarding and directing Episode 4: “Rescue” and Episode 10: “Bruised and Battered”.

This is quite visible through how most of the trailer maintains Nakayama’s sense of groundedness in mundane, calm scenes but there is more dynamic action animation in the intense scenes.

Famous for being the series director of Black Clover, Yoshihara had also been series director for Wisteria: Wand and Sword, which has also made an impression among anime audience due to the consistently strong animation quality of its action scenes.

Taking his place in the role of action animation director is Sōta Shigetsugu, better known as HoneHone, who has been credited for key animations for Episode 7 of Chainsaw Man and has done some iconic key animations for series such as Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, and One Piece.

Makoto Nakazono, chief episode director of Season 1, occupies the role of assistant director, which is more or less the same position he held.

Kazutaka Sugiyama returns as character designer but notably follows the rougher outline Tatsuki Fujimoto applies for the design of his characters in the manga, even adding more details such as a mix of lighter and defined lines to make the thickness of the fabric more and fainter lines in the hair close ups to further mimic the manga art style.

Sota Yamazaki, one of Season 1’s chief animation directors, is promoted to assistant character designer, alongside Shun.

Teppei Ito also returns as director of photography, continuing his growth in the industry, having also worked on Jujutsu Kaisen and has been praised for his constant improvements over his career.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama also returns as Devil Designer and is joined by Riki Matsuura, who has been an animation director on the show as well.

Yūsuke Takeda and Studio Bamboo (Vinland Saga) are still involved with the art direction and backgrounds, showing some stunning locations and backdrops to emphasize the ambience and mood of different scenes.

While there are clear changes on the color design and character design, the art direction remains mostly the same.

Kensuke Ushio returns as series composer as well, his most recent work being on Dandadan, a series by one of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s assistants, Yukinobu Tatsu.
