What is One Piece: Fan Letter?

The One Piece: Fan Latter project is a 30-minute short film that covers the “One Piece novel: Straw Hat Stories”, an official novel by Tomohito Ohsaki released on November 2, 2017.

The title is based on the Nami story, the “Trip to meet the navigator while I can, a day long chance”, about a boy who is inspired by Nami to overcome his anxiety.

Megumi Ishitani’s adaptation of the Straw Hat Story for Nami will have some significant differences from the novels that cater to Ishitani’s creative direction.

For example, in the trailer, the main character is a girl instead of a boy, likely to show how young girls and women show admiration for Nami as a character and could likely be a reflection of Ishitani herself.

The boy was a hikikimori (shut-in) but the girl in the trailer seems to be more outgoing, communicating more with the neighborhood and instead of disguising as a pirate, the girl does the smart thing and disguises herself as a Marine instead.

Although the short, 30-minute film seems to be focusing on the Nami story, about a fangirl of hers, the trailer appears to include adaptations of at least Luffy’s, Zoro’s, and Franky’s stories, which are shown through Luffy’s bounty poster representing his story, the Marines talking represent Zoro’s story and the tired bookshop clerk representing Franky’s story.

Nami

The story begins with a man who has collected various bounty posters of the most beautiful female pirates, with Nami as his favorite.

He admires Nami for a number of reasons, namely her lack of a Devil Fruit and their similarity in age, which motivates him to meet up with Nami to see if she is as beautiful as she is in her wanted poster.

He imagines himself as a pirate or a Marine coming across her but the man does not have the physical attributes for such hard lives because he has never once left his room, outside of visiting the library.

Because of his anxiety, he has a hard time even talking to other people, and so has completely cut himself off from the outside world.

One day, the man finds a poster on his home floor, stating that the Straw Hat Pirates were recruiting members on Sabaody Archipelago, where he lived.

The man overcomes his anxiety to see Nami but decides to dress up as a pirate to blend in.

He heads for the bar where the Straw Hats supposedly were but finds it completely destroyed.

The man was told to ask the surrounding pirates around and was led to Grove 46, where he uses binoculars to look for Nami from afar.

His gaze catches upon someone with orange hair, except this Nami looked nothing like the on he imagined.

That is because the man actually saw the fake Straw Hats.

Suddenly, the Marines surround the area, making the man panic due to his pirate disguise.

The presence of the gigantic Pacifistas only makes him give up and he soon witnesses the Fake Straw Hats exposed.

Just when all hope is lost, the Marines announce the presence of the real Straw Hat crew at Grove 42, which motivates the man to go there.

In Grove 42, the man finally spots the real Nami, who looks even more stunning than her wanted poster, such that he does not want to look at other girls.

Soon, he witnesses the Thousand Sunny be coated in a giant bubble as Nami instructs the crew from the bridge.

This makes the man realize that he needs to find a voice of his own and so he promises to fix his life, telling his mother that he will return to school or look for a job.

Luffy

In the trailer, we see a shadow holding up Luffy’s bounty poster.

That is because Luffy’s story is about a pair of Marines who are also adopted brothers like Ace and Luffy.

The older brother was a Marine officer but his younger brother was his subordinate and the son of the older brother’s stepmom from a previous marriage.

The brothers were summoned to defend Marineford before the Summit War and were amazed by Luffy’s courage to save Portgas D. Ace in spite of the presence of the Admirals and the Warlords of the Sea.

Amidst the battle, the younger brother screams for help but the older brother decides to stay to focus on his own battle, thinking they were not real brothers anyway.

However, the constant screaming made the older brother hear Luffy’s voice screaming to save his brother Ace, which made the Marine officer realize how similar he was to the infamous Pirate and so he went to save his younger brother.

After the war, the officer realized Luffy was a benefactor to him and his brother in a way because Luffy’s presence made him save his own brother.

The story emphasized on a core theme of One Piece, which is that bonds transcend blood.

Zoro

In the trailer, we see three Marines, which could represent Zoro’s story but the original story featured Dressrosa soldiers, not Marines.

After Doflamingo’s defeat, three soldiers were in a bar and complain about how drunk they were.

The soldiers spot a certain man with three swords, which leads the men to debate about who was the strongest swordsman in the world.

This debate catches the stranger’s attention, who joins in as the three men explain their choices.

The bearded soldier believed it was Dracule Mihawk because of how Mihawk cut an iceberg in half at Marineford while the fat soldier countered with Zoro’s recent feat of slicing the gargantuan stone body of Pica in Dressrosa.

The third soldier, a man with glasses, suggests that Shanks was also a swordsman who made even Admiral Sakazuki shiver during Marineford but the others insist that Shanks’ strength was not completely about his swordsmanship.

The stranger points out that Marineford did not have all the strongest swordsmen assembled, as Zoro was not there.

The soldier with glasses brings up Ryuma, which the stranger considers but points out that was only Ryuma with Brook’s shadow inside.

The soldiers consider only living swordsmen and return to the Zoro and Mihawk comparison

The soldier with glasses, however, mocks Zoro’s appearance and even attempts to imitate one of Zoro’s Three Sword Style techniques, which agitates the stranger more.

The bearded soldier in the group notes that biting down a sword in one’s mouth can cause them to mispronounce attack names, as shown when he bites his finger, making the other soldiers laugh again, even though the stranger insists the attack names are pronounced just fine.

Before the stranger attempts to punish the soldiers, the fat soldier in the group switches up and thinks Mihawk is the strongest swordsman, with now all three in favor.

The soldiers wonder why the stranger seems angry on Zoro’s behalf until they see him cut the barrels of alcohol on the back wall of the bar with his sword and the stranger holds a sword in each hand and one in his mouth.

The stranger announces to the rest of the bar that the soldiers will pay for everyone’s drinks, all words he pronounced perfectly, before leaving and refusing to comment on his identity while insisting the soldiers apologize once they get sober.

Franky

In the trailer, we see a girl bookstore clerk and a scene of her not trying to chase some boys who steal a an adult magazine from the store.

In Water 7, a bookstore clerk works, noticing that many people buy the magazine “Shipwright Monthly”, which Kokoro attributes to Franky being on the cover.

The clerk does not know who Franky is so Kokoro explains his story but the girl did not react, making Kokoro ask the girl to be more expressive as she leaves the store.

The girl recalls her move to Water 7 a month ago due to her father’s work there, forcing her to leave her dance troupe  and to work as a bookstore clerk, which leads her to dislike the island and job.

The week after, the bookstore received a new  magazine: “Robot & Cyborg Monthly” but did not realize Franky was a cyborg.

Iceburg and Paulie arrive, bringing up how Franky was a fellow apprentice with Iceburg was part of Tom’s workers, which reminds the girl of the robot dance that was to be used for her dance troupe’s next contest.

Another magazine comes in, “Hardboiled Quarterly”, which shows off Franky’s “hardboiled debut in Dressrosa, but remains confused about the entire subject of the magazine.

Mozu and Kiwi, formerly of Franky’s Family, come to get an issue and tell the girl about their bond with Franky but are interrupted when two boys try to steal an adult magazine and the clerk fails to get to them. This part is featured in the trailer.

However, the debut of “Monthly Pervert Magazine” finally makes the girl react, with laughter. She spots Kokoro being interviewed for the issue

The boys,  Michael and Hoichael, came to apologize for stealing the magazine after getting yelled at by Mozu and Kiwi.

After they leave, the clerk continues talking to Kokoro, who remarks that she’s opened up since she came to the island thanks to Franky’s appearances in the magazines she sells, making the two wonder if Franky is sneezing at this time, which he does.
