What Are Barrier Techniques In Jujutsu Kaisen?

There are six types of barrier techniques.

The Jujutsu Kaisen power system revolves around cursed energy and cursed techniques.

One of the most common techniques used by Jujutsu sorcerers is the barrier technique.

In this article, we will discuss what these barrier techniques are and all the types of barrier techniques that we have seen so far.

What Is A Barrier Technique?

As the name suggests, these techniques allow one to erect and manipulate barriers. They are mostly used to either conceal areas, trap enemies, or, in some cases, protect.

Different Types Of Barrier Techniques

Curtains

One of the most commonly used barrier techniques, Curtain, is primarily used to conceal the battle between Jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits.

When cast, the sky gets covered in black, and a domain gets created, entrapping anything inside it.

Creating a curtain requires the least amount of curse energy and is the easiest to cast. The user just needs to have enough cursed energy, and with a special chant, they can easily cast it. The chant goes as follows:

Emerge from the darkness, blacker than darkness. Purify that which is impure.

For non-sorcerers, these curtains are not visible, along with the sorcerers and cursed spirits inside them.

Domain Expansion

The pinnacle of a sorcerer’s technique, Domain Expansion, is the strongest technique a sorcerer can have.

It is extremely difficult to master, and even some of the strongest sorcerers can’t wield it.

Even though Nanami Kento is capable of four consecutive Black Flashes, he does not have a domain expansion.

Jogo domain expansion

In this technique, one creates a spherical barrier, trapping themselves and the target within it. Then the barrier is imbued with their innate cursed technique.

Within the domain, the user’s cursed techniques are improved, and any cursed technique activated by the user will always hit the target.

With all these benefits, the technique also comes with a hefty drawback.

Domain expansion utilizes an immense amount of cursed energy, and only Gojo, Sukuna, and Hakari are known to be able to cast it multiple times in a day.

Gojo and Sukuna are able to do it due to his huge cursed energy reservoir and efficient cursed energy use.

Hakari is only capable of this feat when he hits the domain’s jackpot to replenish his cursed energy.

We have already covered domain expansion and the cursed techniques of Gojo Satoru, Sukuna, and Hakari. You can read them if want to understand their broken abilities.

Simple Domain

Also known as the ‘Domain of the Weak,” the simple domain was created during the Heian era as a countermeasure for domain expansion.

A simple domain creates a small region around the sorcerer that is not imbued with any cursed technique. Within this range, any cursed technique used is canceled; this is also how it neutralizes the sure-hit effect of domain expansion.

Inside this domain, the caster cannot move his legs, or else the domain will break apart. This technique is most effective against mediocre domains; against strong domains like the infinite void, the simple does not hold for long.

Domain Amplification

Domain amplification is an advanced version of the simple domain where users envelop themselves in a barrier without imbuing the barrier with any cursed technique.

Upon contact with the target, it cancels the cursed technique, but while using this technique, the user cannot use their own cursed technique.

Using domain amplification Jogo and Hanami were able to fight against Gojo’s infinity but he easily counters it by strengthening his cursed technique.

Secret Art: Falling Blossom Emotion

Similar to the simple domain, the Falling Blossom Emotion was also created to negate the sure-hit effect of domain expansion.

It is a secret technique passed down in the three major jujutsu families. In this technique, the user coats themselves in cursed energy that counters domain expansion’s sure-hit attacks.

When the user gets hit by the sure-hit attack of a domain, the enveloping cursed energy counters it with equal force to nullify it. We Nobito Zenin used this technique during the Shibuya incident against the cursed spirit Dagon’s domain.

Hollow Wicker Basket

Hollow Wicker Basket is an esoteric technique and an older version of a simple domain. It erects a basket-shaped barrier that can neutralize a domain expansion’s sure-hit effect.

Reggie Star used this technique against Megumi’s domain expansion, Chimera Shadow Garden, but it failed as Megumi’s domain was incomplete and thus did not have a sure-hit effect.

TL;DR

Barrier techniques allow one to erect and manipulate barriers.

They are mostly used to either conceal areas, trap enemies, or, in some cases, protect. There are six barrier techniques shown in the series, these are curtain, domain expansion, simple domain, Domain Amplification Secret Art: Falling Blossom Emotion, and Hollow Wicker Basket.

Curtains are used to hide the fights between sorcerers and cursed spirits from non-sorcerers. Domain expansion is the ultimate form of a sorcerer’s cursed technique, it improves the user’s cursed technique and provides a sure-hit effect to the user’s cursed technique.

A simple Domain is a weak domain created to defend against the sure-hit effect of domain expansion by neutralizing it. It is not effective against strong domains.

Domain amplification is an advanced version of the simple domain where the user creates a barrier around them, like an aura around the body, but does not imbue it with any cursed technique.

This allows users to neutralize any cursed technique that comes in contact with them.

Falling Blossom Emotion is a secret technique of the big three jujutsu family, and was also created to counter domain expansion.

In this user coats themself in cursed energy which counters a sure-hit effect on a domain expansion by countering with cursed energy of equal strength.

Hollow Wicker Basket is an esoteric technique and an older version of a simple domain. It erects a basket-shaped barrier that can neutralise a domain expansion’s sure-hit effect.
